Three Auto-Train U-boats lead southbound Louisville & Nashville train #867 through Etowah, TN in January 1973. The Auto-Train engines were built to Seaboard Coast Line specifications and had a toggle switch in the cab for "freight" and "passenger" - with the idea being that if Auto-Train folded within a year or two the engines could be sold to SCL for freight use. Auto-Train actually operated for 10 years on two routes - the original and primary route was from Lorton, VA to Sanford, FL and a second route from Louisville, KY to Sanford. When Dad shot this one in 1973 the engines were making test runs from Louisville to Florida for Auto-Train to deterimine which route to actually use. They would eventually settle on a route that took the train through Nashville along the same route as Amtrak's Floridian - and in fact the Amtrak and Auto-Train trains would sometimes be combined into one.
On one of the test runs these units ran on the K&A route of the L&N, Dad got to ride home to Etowah from Morley, TN.

My friend Mike sent this scan to me after he found the original in a box of his father's photos, and gave me permission to post it here. Written on the back is "First engine of the Great Northern the William Crooks, taken at the Great Northern depot in Fargo, 1950".
GN 4-4-0 #1 "William Crooks" (ex-St.PM&M #1, xx-St.P&P #1, nee-M&P #1). Despite being built for the old Minnesota & Pacific Railroad in 1861 and not passing to Great Northern until 1890, because of the evolution of the Great Northern from those other railroads this engine is considered GN's first engine. It was named for General William Crooks of the 6th MN Volunteers during the Civil War. The engine is preserved today at the Lake Superior Railroad Museum in Duluth, Minnesota.

This photo was taken in the B&O's Hempfield Railroad Yard, now the location of the Ohio County Public Library. Swift & Co. (Wholesale Meats), seen in the background, stood where the library's side parking lot is, on the corner of 16th and Eoff St.
On Tuesday, July 12, 2016, the Ohio County Public Library unveiled a new photographic display tracing the history of the Hempfield Lot upon which the Library now sits. In the lower level hallway of the library, the display traces the lot from Zane land to cemetery to rail yard to the opening of the Ohio County Public Library in 1973.

View more photos of the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway.
The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, locally known as the "Toy Train", is a 2 ft (610 mm) narrow gauge railway that runs between New Jalpaiguri and Darjeeling (India). It is still operated by vintage British-built B Class steam locomotives. Operations between Siliguri and Kurseong have been temporarily suspended since 2010 following a Landslide at Tindharia (view photos of the landslide).
