This is the PLAYING APP, which manages all MUSIC, VIDEOS and PICTURES.
Here's a closeup of the light emitters and detectors. I'm not quite sure how these work yet - whether the detector and the emitter is built into the same unit (as I suppose it is). I think the clear, curved part at the bottom edge is probably a lens - taking light either in or out.

The touchscreen is great for a stealthy "shoot from the hip", when you see something interesting or funny.
On Christmas eve I ordered this brandless MP3 player on ebay for a whopping $30 (that includes the shipping costs). I'd been looking for one with similar features when I stumbled upon it. I finally received it yesterday and, I have to admit, it does everything I need it to and more... all for less than the brand name equivalent. As further testament to how cheap I am, those are $3 headphones.

And here's the broken touchscreen in all its (non) glory. I opened my Reader up to see how feasible it would be to fit a replacement screen, but quickly concluded it was too hard. Replacement screens are relatively inexpensive, and easy to find on sites like eBay, but the original screen is bonded with adhesive, very firmly, to its backplate, so it looks to me like you could only get the old screen off by smashing and splintering it (it's extremely fragile). I decided to give up at this point.

a fairly simple (about 10 pins needed, mostly D and some A) interface for a color touchscreen. arduino powered (and somewhat slow) but ok enough for showing soft-buttons, labels, colors, pixmaps and such.
to keep things simple, I used an IDC connector pair on the TFT and made the LCDuino side the 'clean-up' side. almost all arduino pins are taken over by this device. I plan to have this system send UI commands over the uart/serial port to the main (other) arduino that runs the primary embedded system's function.
