There were loads of these wandering around the Barbados Wildlife Reserve. I nearly trod on a few.

These two were having a disagreement over a female that was getting away as fast as she could.

Species Name: Aldabra tortoise

Scientific Name: Geochelone gigantea

Continent: Africa

Animal Name(s): Herbie, Georgina and Dulce

Aldabra tortoises can live to be over 100 years old. Large Aldabra tortoises will knock over small trees and shrubs to obtain nutritious leaves. This can create trails used by other animals. Aldabra tortoises are active in the early morning and late evening. They rest in the shade during the middle of the day when it’s hot.

At Reid Park Zoo:

Herbie, our male tortoise, weighs over 500 pounds, but we don’t know how old he is. He is one of the few animals at this Zoo that was wild caught—over 50 years ago. These tortoises get excited during rainy weather or when zoo keepers give them showers with a hose.

Usually when I try to photograph the giant tortoise all I get is a picture of its shell moving away from me. This time though I was able to get round to the head end of things and zoom in.

I get the feeling he was wondering why I was interrupting his snack.

The largest of this range replicates this "space tugboat's" four powerful and retractable manoeuvring thrusters (along with storage locations), detachable cockpit, external cargo cages, and manipulator arms.

Sorry, this is very late and not the best image but it is cute. One of my Dad's baby tortoises giving me a look...

Slight update on this image, just made a little time to improve the original pic, cropped slightly and tweaked the colour! I prefer it now:)

So I'm working on the electrical box on the Ranch at Jonestead. I look up and see this rock six feet away from me, watching me! Darn if it is not a tortoise, I go do something at the trailer and poof, he is out of sight.
