Ile aux Aigrettes, Mauritius
There were originally 5 species of giant tortoise in the Mascarene Islands (Mauritius, Reunion and Rodrigues) and they were a vital part of the eco system on the islands particularly for seed dispersal. All were hunted to extinction and the Aldabra Tortoise of the Seychelles is now the nearest living relative. These have been introduced onto Ile aux Aigrettes to help fill the void left by the extinct native species.

A petroform in the shape of a tortoise possibly 1500 years old at Bannock Point in Whiteshell Provincial Park, Manitoba. There are many petroforms at this location and at many other nearby locations, including the largest site of petroforms in North America at Tie Creek, a protected site in Whiteshell Provincial Park.

What are Petroforms?
“Petroforms are defined as features formed by the placement (not piling) of stones to create the outlines of figures or shapes. The stones or small boulders are arranged on bedrock outcrops in the shapes of snakes, turtles, humans and geometric forms. Archaeologists group petroforms with rock paintings or "pictographs" and refer to them as "rock art," although both are thought to have been made by Native people for religious purposes.”

Aldabra Tortoises may live over 150 years. They evolved their giant size on small islands free from threats of humans.

I grew up around gopher tortoises, and it's really great to see them thriving in my neighborhood. A common sight that never gets old. Their burrows are widely used by other species throughout the ecosystem, making gopher tortoises a keystone species with a pivotal role to play in their native community.
The gopher tortoise is a species of the Gopherus genus native to the southeastern United States. The gopher tortoise is seen as a keystone species because it digs burrows that provide shelter for at least 360 known other animal species. Hernando, Florida, USA.
Passed this fella making his way down the trail also. The official state tortoise of Florida is the gopher tortoise.

Spotted this tortoise when I drove by the park on my way home last March. It was busy feeding on the grass so I pulled over and very slow and carefully took one step closer each time I got a chance when it's head was down on the grass. Surprised I could get that close without being spotted. I even got a short video. They're such nice creatures. They look so harmless .. never bothered anyone it seems.

I just met this big girl in my backyard. Not the same Gopher Tortoise as the previous photo. It's biggest one I've seen so far; easily a foot long. I've been down with a cold, but I hope to get out on the river tomorrow with the camera.

One of the most difficult issues facing tortoises is high mortality among the newly hatched. It is believed that only 1-5 of 100 tortoises born survive to adulthood.
Like most tortoises, the Indian star tortoise is a herbivore and lives only off of ingested vegetation. It often eats leaves, plants, fruits, berries, and flowers. So if it grows and is on the ground, the Indian star tortoise will eat it. Even though it has the ability to hide in its shell when threatened, the poor tortoise still finds itself somewhat easy prey for lard birds, snakes, and other common predators, including humans, who capture them for both food, and for the purpose of sale in the aforementioned exotic pet trade. Since the tortoises are very hard to breed in captivity, hunters must go out and pluck them from the wild. Despite this hunting, it still has a strong population.

I will deliver this to daughter-in-law Sophie soon, during a dog walk. She collected the dog/cat reflection pictures and paid me generously, but I'd forgotten her request for a knitting tortoise! When she wrote her idea on Messenger, I first of all thought she meant a picture of a tortoise for some knitting, eg a picture on a sweater or something!! Then I twigged, she wanted the tortoise to be knitting! This is something I've never seen before, so this is how I would imagine one to look!!
