One of many Gopher Tortoises Gopherus polyphemus seen on a hike in Stuart, FL. Such awesome creatures.
I am always amazed at how these creatures are powerful enough to move their enormous bulk. Look at the size of those front legs-- all muscle!

so.. my backyard is now like the shangri-la for the desert. Well the fertile ground has brought out all sorts of animals. I already had plenty of birds and lizards, but a baby desert tortoise found his way into our yard. I have named him 'Little T' unless we find a more suitable name. I had a tortoise that was approximately 2' diameter.
This gopher tortoise, with a tear in it's eye, chewed on a blade of grass as it crossed through our backyard in Stuart, Florida.
The African Spurred Tortoise, also called the African Spur Thigh Tortoise, is a species of tortoise which inhabits the southern edge of the Sahara desert, in northern Africa. It is the third largest species of tortoise in the world and the largest species of mainland tortoise (not found on an island) (from Wikipedia)

My tortoise came out of hibernation today, making it 58 winters he's survived in my ownership! Quite a bit later waking up than for many years, which I guess is due to the mild start to the winter and the cold finish.
The tortoise beetles are an artificial grouping of tribes within the leaf beetle subfamily Hispinae. In past classifications, they have been variously placed as a family ("Cassidae") or a subfamily (Cassidinae); when it was recognized that this group was not monophyletic, it was split and the resulting tribes were incorporated into the Hispinae. Some of the tribes that are considered "tortoise beetles" in the historic sense are the Cassidini, Dorynotini, Hemisphaerotini, Ischyrosonychini, and Mesomphaliini. Their common name arose from the superficial resemblance some species bear to tortoises, the elytra being analogised with the aforementioned reptile's.

I was doing what was sort of a photography meet-up. This tortoise didn't seem to mind all the cameras during breakfast!
