Pool and spa at the hotel. We were the only guests so we had an excellent spa with a glass of Torrontes (a local variety of white which smells sweet but tastes a little like green apple).

Relatively inexpensive white from Argentina... Quite good.
Tastes like a Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay mix...
Was introduced to this at Alinea...
Pacha-Mama Organic Torrontes 2010 from Las Moras is produced from organically grown Torrontes grapes. The wine has lovely aromas of roses and peaches with ripe honeyed citrus and tropical fruit flavours on the palate. The finish is long and elegant.

That's right, another wine tasting—this time at the Vines of Mendoza, a great English-speaking tasting room in the center of the city. After a tall glass of sparkling wine (it was, after all, Jess' birthday), we plowed through seven malbecs, a torrontes, a sauvignon blanc and a very unusual cabernet with our fearless guide.
Foolish [girl]! Why tremblest thou?
Thou lovest it, then, my wine?
Wouldst more of it? See, how glows,
Through the delicate, flush’d marble,
The red, creaming liquor,
Strown with dark seeds!
Drink, thee! I chide thee not,
Deny thee not my bowl.
Come, stretch forth thy hand, thee—so—
Drink, drink again!

Malbrontes was inspired by the great red wines of Cote Rotie in France's Rhone Valley, where a little white Viognier wine is added to the red Syrah.
The Torrontes grape is grown in Cafayate in northern Argentina. This ice cream shop sells ice cream made from the Torrontes grape and also Malbec. Delicious.

One of the large bodegas around Cafayate. Cafayate is famous for its Torrontes grape that produces a dry white wine.
I chose this recipe knowing full-well that it would make a perfect pairing, and I wasn’t proven wrong!
The recipe I selected was for Shrimp Tacos with Pickled-Red-Onion Salad. Not exactly a winter dish, but Torrontes isn’t a winter wine!
