When the Olympic torch comes to Shanghai, the route will travel down Nanjing Road West past my office. I plan to be far away when that happens, heaven knows I don't want to be caught up in any big crowds here.
"The U.S. Embassy has issued a Travel Alert to update U.S. citizens about security issues in China and advises American citizens traveling or residing there to be alert to their surroundings and exercise caution at all times. The Travel Alert expires on October 31, 2008 and includes the following advice:
Any large-scale public event such as the upcoming Olympic Games may present an attractive target for terrorists. There is a heightened risk that extremist groups will conduct terrorist acts within China in the near future. In light of these security concerns, U.S. citizens traveling in China are advised to use caution and to be alert to their surroundings at all times, including at hotels, in restaurants, on public transportation and where there are demonstrations and other large-scale public gatherings. Consistent with our standard advice, American citizens are urged to avoid the areas of demonstrations.
American citizens are strongly encouraged to maintain a high level of vigilance, be aware of local events, and take the appropriate steps to bolster their personal security."

The sun shone as thousands of people turned out to celebrate the arrival of the Olympic Torch in Knowsley.
The iconic Flame arrived at Knowsley Safari Park to be welcomed by around 6,000 people at a free event for the community.
It was carried in by local teenager Claudia Dowdeswell and passed onto the next Torch bearer, Jane Campbell who completed the circuit of the Park.
The Torch bearers were surrounded by officers from the Metropolitan Police whose duty it is to protect the Flame throughout the national Relay.
Mike Dooling, who’d been a teacher in Knowsley for 40 years, brought the Torch he’d carried a few days before on the Relay in Tatton Park.
Crowds gathered around him to see the Torch and many got the chance to hold it, including Knowsley Mayor and Mayoress Cllr Norman and Wendy Hogg.
Around forty different community groups were also represented with stalls and stands and local people performed at the Park’s Moment to Shine stage.
To cheers and flag waving, the Torch convoy then moved onto Liverpool Road where the Relay began again.
It was carried through Huyton and out into Liverpool, cheered on by crowds, ten deep in places, who’d turned out to be part of the Olympic excitement.
One of the torchbearers was 16 year old Joe Shaw, from Kirkby, who was chosen because of his charity work for the disabled and the wider community.
“This was a great day for Knowsley,” said Cllr Eddie Connor, Knowsley’s cabinet member for Leisure, Community and Culture.
“It was so exciting and great to see so many people turning out to be a part of it. They were all cheering and waving flags. It was really something.
“The Torch Relay has made it possible for the whole of Britain to share in the spirit of the Games.”

Before a student is allowed to bear the title of "Freshman", he or she has to be promoted. An age old tradition in Skinnarila where the water of Lake Saimaa promotes the new students as Freshmen.

This unsettling photo illustration depicts a gunman following a violent shooting spree April 20, 2010, when a 22-year-old man with a history of violence walked into a bookstore in Wichita Falls, Texas, and opened fire on its patrons. He wounded four women, two of them staff sergeants from Sheppard Air Force Base, Texas, then drove to a bar and killed an employee outside (a son of a civilian worker at Sheppard) before he drove home and took his own life. Staff Sgt. Tanya Tesser, also from Sheppard, administered first aid to those wounded in the bookstore.
