Lumpin Croop's Fighting Cocks are a famous band of Dogs of War mercenaries that hail from the peaceful and agricultural farmlands of the Moot, the homeland of the Halfling race. Halflings are generally thought of as peaceful, well meaning, honest and sociable people, slow to anger and disdainful of violence. This, at least, is the common view, and it is a view readily encouraged by the sight of rosy cheeked, well-fed Halfling faces and broad Halfling smiles. Such are nature's gifts to that race, and the bountiful lands they occupy within the Empire of Man.

However, even amongst this tolerant and easy-going people, there is the odd proverbial rotten apple that spoils an otherwise toothsome batch. In this case, the rotten apple goes by the name of Lumpin Croop and the batch in question is known as Lumpin Croop's Fighting Cocks. Extraordinary trackers and excellent marksmen, this band of Halfling game-wardens and hunters have fought many battles under Lumpins leadership, using their expert tracking skills to lead their allies through thick wilderness to ambush enemy armies without being notice.

Lumpin Croop himself was a former thief and poacher before he became a mercenary, using his skills of stealth and tracking to mold the Fighting Cocks into what they are today. Ever since then, Lumpin has shown great compassion towards his fellow Halflings, staying up for hours to create an ingenious plan that would hopefully bring him and his company victory upon the battlefield.

My cousins bring me back one of these brilliantly toothsome pies they get in Yorkshire when on late Summer break, I think it's maybe from a Butcher in Richmond? These certainly carry the Kilrymont seal of approval. Theres something about these decorated golden-tanned pies with that glazed lid that defies efforts not to cut a sample wedge. So, knowing full well that if I didn't give way it'd be hard to concentrate on owt else, I gave in. Quite why our "Scotch Pies" are the rather limp and pathetic things they are when magnificence like this is possible, I can't tell. Would that it were otherwise?

Raita is a simple preparation made by adding fruits, vegetables or any other thing to beaten yogurt/curds. Most desi families enjoy yogurt either plain or in the form of delicious raitas as an accompaniment with lunch or dinner. Raitas are unique because they are cool and spicy at the same time. One will find so many varieties of raitas in sub-continent like Bathue Ka Raita, Boondi Raita, Fruit Raita, Ghiya Raita, Onion and Tomato Raita, Mint and Coriander Raita, Garlic Raita and Cucumber Raita.

In my early days on Flickr, I posted a modest picture called "Antique Store Lion," which happened to be in front of an Upper West Side antique store called Olde Good Things. The lion is still there, but he has been joined by some toothsome companions.

Farali Batata Vada has this toothsome base of potatoes which is sautéed with spices and finally its fritters are made by coating it with kuttu ka aata. Here is a recipe to make it.

(new location update)

A couple of years ago, we were viewing the magnificent sandstone murals of Angkor Wat, when our guide, pointed to us one particular figure. “That,” he said, “is for me the most beautiful apsara in all of Angkor.” Unlike other apsaras, this one has several unique features. A high-bridged and aquiline nose, which almost is not Asian. A cleft chin. And most peculiar of all, an open smile which revealed straight even teeth.

Later, I found out that this is indeed a famous relief, cited in travel books. It is one of only ten apsaras who bear toothy smiles. (Online sources would often point to only two but dewata.org has surveyed 10). Tourists actually spend time to look for this one and if their guide is not knowledgeable, they often could not locate it.

What drove the artist to carve this toothy apsara? From what I read, Khmer tradition calls for apsara dancers never to show their teeth during a performance. Grinning with an open mouth is also generally considered impolite in Asia...

German postcard by Ufa, Berlin-Tempelhof, no. FK 455. Photo: Arthur Grimm / CCC-Film / Allianz. Publicity still for Stern von Rio (Kurt Neumann, 1955).

Italian model and actress Maria Frau (1930) was a very photogenic starlet of the European cinema of the 1950s.

Maria Frau was born in Sassari on the island of Sardinia in 1930. Very photogenic, she appeared in a few photo shoots of various weeklies. In 1950, she was cast in the lead role of a 13th-century mystic in the historical film Margherita da Cortona/Margaret of Cortona (1950, Mario Bonnard). Her voice was dubbed by Lydia Simoneschi. It was the start of a brief career in the European cinema. She again played the female lead in her next films Luna rossa/Red Moon (1951, Armando Fizzarotti) opposite Renato Baldini and Il lupo della frontier/Frontier Wolf (1951, Edoardo Anton) with Piero Lulli. Other Italian productions in which she starred were the adventure film Sul ponte dei sospiri/On the Bridge of D

Sighs (1953, Antonio Leonviola) with Françoise Rosay, Questi fantasmi/These Phantoms (1954, Eduardo De Filippo) starring Renato Rascel. Her first foreign film was the French comedy J'avais sept filles/My Seven Little Sins (1954, Jean Boyer) in which she played one of the seven lovely illegitimate daughters of an old French count (Maurice Chevalier) who keeps an index of all his past loves. D.B. du Monteil at IMDb: “Maurice Chevalier is absolutely unbearable as an old beau who wants to be still young (‘Tomorrow I'm 20’ is one of his repetitive songs). Only 'ham' can describe his work; the same can apply to the seven girls who pass for his illegitimate daughters (?), for his son (played by stage and TV actor Louis Velle), who is more interested in insects than in women, for the servant (an abominable Paolo Stoppa).”

Back in Italy, Maria Frau co-starred as Cleopatra opposite Totò in his comedy Totò all'inferno/Totò in Hell (1955, Camillo Mastrocinque). Then she appeared in the German-Italian adventure film Stern von Rio/Star from Rio (1955, Kurt Neumann) with Johannes Heesters and Willy Fritsch, and in the French-Italian detective film Vous pigez?/Diamond Machine (1955, Pierre Chevalier) opposite Eddie Constantine in his standard guise of hard-boiled American G-man Lemmy Caution. Hal Erickson at AllMovie: “The plot is the usual mélange of intrigue, double-crosses and impossibly beautiful women. The delectable damsels in this outing include the toothsome Maria Frau, Nadine Tallier and Irene Tunc.“ In 1957, Frau left the film business to marry a Roman nobleman. Her last film was the peplum La Venere di Cheronea/The Venus of Cheronea (1957, Fernando Cerchio, Viktor Tourjansky) in which Belinda Lee featured as Aphrodite. Hal Erickson calls it an ‘overheated melodrama’: “Naturally, the plotline requires the curvaceous Lee to disrobe at the slightest provocation, and just as naturally, the censors had a hissy-fit every time she bared her knee or shoulder. The principal attribute of La Venere di Cheronea is the excellent colour cinematography of Arturo Galles.” Maria Frau has acted in 16 films.

A staple on Madeira, this is a fish you don't see much elsewhere. Anyway, you will only see them dead - they live at depths of a kilometre or more and die of decompression when brought to the surface. Jacques Cousteau tried (and failed) in a bathysphere to be the first man to see them alive in the sixties.

The name espada is also applied to a good many unrelated fish species in the Latin world. Their delicate flesh is cooked in a variety of ways, all very toothsome.

Happy Thanksgiving! :)

A grape is a delicious fruiting berry of the deciduous woody vines of the botanical genus Vitis. Grapes can be eaten raw or they can be used for making delectable wine, tasty jam, luscious juice, mouthwatering jelly, healthy raisins, useful vinegar, and nutritious grape seed oil. Grapes are a non-climacteric type of fruit, generally occurring in clusters.
