The Dunnock is similar in size to the House Sparrow or Robin but they tend to be a little sleeker with a finer bill. The plumage is a bit dull being a mixture of grey on the head and chest and brown elsewhere. The upperparts and the flank are streaked with warm brown tones. You usually find Dunnocks foraging on the ground or shuffling about in their search for food and their tails always seem to be moving nervously. The breeding behaviour is a little different than you would expect by that I mean one female bird will mate with two male birds, the male bird pecks at the cloaca to remove any sperm from the female before mating themselves to ensure that the baby chick is theirs, and because of this neither male knows who the father is of each chick so they are both happy to supply food for her chicks which usually number around five or so. Young birds have olive brown eyes and these develop into a stunning mahogany red colour around December in their first year.

Another glimpse of the wonderful Val Boite, where the warm tones of autumn act as a counterpoint to the blue sky. The yellow of larches contrasts with the intense green of fir trees.

There is a commonly held idea that all religions teach essentially the same thing: that we will somehow "make it" so long as our good deeds outweigh our bad deeds.

There is also the idea that the vast majority of people are "essentially good".

Taken as a whole, such a concept would appear to be a comfort. And yet, it is based on assumptions with no basis in fact.

The Bible claims itself to be the Word of God. What does it say?

1. About a final set of scales - weighing our good and bad deeds? Wrong...

James 2:10

For whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all.

2. About the "essential goodness of humanity"? Sadly, again, wrong...

Romans 3:23

For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God.

So, what are we to do about it? If we cannot earn salvation by good deeds, what hope is there?

Romans 6:23

For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

The answer is a GIFT! You cannot earn it. All you can do is accept it...

John 3:16

For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

I visit my daughter's gardens every day now, to see the crocus show. So many of them, and so large - plus, I don't remember them being two-toned like this last year.

Wolfe Tone by Night - commissioned in 1964, artist Eddie Delaney and opened in 1967, this is a depiction of a young Wolfe Tone. The statue was badly damaged in a bomb blast by loyalists in 1971, but was repaired by Delaney and replaced later that year.

Apologies in advance for the quality of this image but it was dark down in the lower levels of the Diefenbunker. This was the Gold Room, where Canada's gold reserves would be stored in the event of a nuclear blast during the cold war. I gather the gold would have no value if irradiated so had to be protected. Thankfully, it was never needed and no gold was ever stored here - though I have difficulty understanding how something so heavy could be moved in quantity on short notice.

A bit of history: to keep the vault secure, the government installed a top of the line Mosler safe. The latter was a world-renowned safe manufacturer based in the US. They had a unique claim to fame after the first nuclear weapons were used against Japan at the end of World War II. A number of Mosler safes were being used in the Mitsui Bank, located in Hiroshima. When the atomic bomb ‘Little Boy’ was detonated, some of the safes miraculously withstood the explosion. Their unexpected capability of withstanding a nuclear blast led to their unprecedented rise in popularity during the Cold War when the threat of nuclear attack seemed imminent.

Daily Dog Challenge-Two

She is a two-tone colour...rusty red and white. She had her tail high this morning, she was having a ball...literally!

Two monochromes for Donnerstagmonocrom today, both cooked in Silver Efex and split toned.

The first is of a succulent taken earlier this year at the RHS Rosemoor garden in Devon. I really struggled with this one and gave up twice. It’s been tweaked every which way before I finally abandoned it. It was meant to be a high key for a start…

The second is based on an image I took for this week’s Macro Monday but rejected in favour of a little leaf set that was about the same size but sweeter.

Commentary is the same for both.

Thank you for taking the time to look. I hope you enjoy the image. Happy Monochrome Thursday :)

Older shot (obviously) where Ive given it more work and toned differntly

My experience when taking this picture is unforgettable. It was a rough see on that day and the boat was rocking dangerously. The boatman showed us how the waves pushed water on the low rocky wall from the other side. I made a mistake of standing to shoot but slid down to the opposite end with my camera but luckily got hold of the frame of the boat. Everyone started to help had ended up in the same position as I was :) The boatman who stood steady in all the commotion was grinning ear to ear. He must have seen many passengers like us :))

Many thanks to all those who view, fav or comment my pictures. It is much appreciated.

This goes back to when I had first gotten the Fuji X-T1 four years ago. Came across it when looking back through folders. I'd had to shoot jpeg at first as neither Lr nor Ps had the RAW conversion yet.

Looking back through these old photos shows me how much my perspective on editing has changed over the years.

There is still quite a bit of my older viewpoint in this, with a smidge of newer ideas.

What's new is creating a greater variation of hues, while making them less garish. There are more colours in this version, but they've been toned down. The older version boinged a lot more and had more sharpening too.

We had been very lucky that day at the canyon, blessed with interesting clouds through much of our time there.

Happy Tree-mendous Tuesday!

I just have to resubmit this cause it's all about background stamping.

I just fell in love with Donna's white on white

www.flickr.com/photos/3umbrellas/3500188610/ So I used six of my background stamps and just stamped away then punched out inchies and arranged them. Lots of stamp cleaning to do now :( .For some reason I just wanted to leave the top white not sure if that is the right thing? Thanks for looking.

This image was shot on Kodak Tmax with a Nikon F3 and Lensbaby Sweet 35.

I used to enjoy shooting the Three Mile Island power plant when it was operational. The smoke billowing from the stacks always made for interesting images.
