I'll need to make a closer study of hyphae like these, after noticing back home that this shot suggests there's a hard outer core with a more flexible central strand. The toadstools are growing beside a rotting log, very close to a small river (the South Esk).

Just as we finished hiking the Chick today, we came across these adorable little toadstools that hid beneath the rocks near the trailhead.
