These garden ornaments make a tinkling sound on windy days as the tops move against the stems. They are surrounded by forget-me-not plants, which will be covered in pale blue flowers when the weather is warmer.

Taken in the rimrock hoodoo area. No HDR, a manual blend of two exposures.

A mushroom, or toadstool, is the fleshy, spore-bearing fruiting body of a fungus, typically produced above ground, on soil, or on its food source. The standard for the name mushroom is the cultivated white button mushroom, Agaricus bisporus; hence the word mushroom is most often applied to those fungi (Basidiomycota, Agaricomycetes) that have a stem (stipe), a cap (pileus), and gills (lamellae, sing. lamella) on the underside of the cap. Mushroom also describes a variety of other gilled fungi, with or without stems, therefore the term is used to describe the fleshy fruiting bodies of some Ascomycota. These gills produce microscopic spores that help the fungus spread across the ground or its occupant surface. Forms deviating from the standard morphology usually have more specific names, such as bolete, puffball, stinkhorn, and morel, and gilled mushrooms themselves are often called agarics in reference to their similarity to Agaricus or their order Agaricales. By extension, the term mushroom can also refer to either the entire fungus when in culture, the thallus (called a mycelium) of species forming the fruiting bodies called mushrooms, or the species itself. 20429

I did the the hike into the Toadstool Hoodoos very late last night to shoot them by the light of the rising moon. It took a while for the moon to come up over the mountains, so I didn't even see the moon until after 1:30 AM. Hiking in, in pitch darkness before the moon came up was... Interesting. The trail is nothing more than a few sets of footprints thru the desert. After all the rain we've had this week, most of the footprints have washed away. And, speaking of washes. The wash that you have to cross about 10 times to get to these is still a mud pit. All in all, an interesting midnight hike. At least I found them... A few months ago, Jill and I tried to hike to these at night and couldn't find the damn things. The trail was fairly easy to follow until you get a few hundred feet away. Then the path splits out in about 10 different directions. Amazing how disorienting it is out there at night.

A few from yesterdays jaunt out to Alderley Edge to try and find some interesting Fungi. I was hoping for some of the classic red and white numbers but they sadly elude me for now! These were all pretty small and all shot with the 100mm macro.
