Toad, Sai Kung, Hong Kong

I very nearly trod on this toad. In the dark, it was much too well camouflaged on the surface of the path. So after nearly falling over making sure I didn't put my foot on it, we stood and debated the best thing to do.

Eventually, since the path was busy, we decided moving it a few meters away, towards the undergrowth, but in the direction it was facing was the best option. Did we do the right thing?

Check out this Fowler's toad spotted at Port Louisa National Wildlife Refuge in Iowa. These toads can be found in woodlands, prairie and fields. They’ll even burrow to escape the heat!

Another shot of the large toad we found at Birnie loch yesterday.

Bufo bufo.

The lawn is strewn with hunting toads at night.

A few nights ago Rosie licked one and spent an hour trying to rid her mouth of the disgusting taste, so now she leaves them alone!

These little people are too young to breed yet, and won't reach maturity till they are five or six.

Found in the forest. Nice one, isn't it? :)

Common toad or European toad is widespread throughout Europe, with the exception of Ireland and some Mediterranean islands. Its easterly range extends to Irkutsk in Siberia and its southerly range includes parts of northwestern Africa in the northern mountains of Morocco, Algeria, and Tunisia.

Adults can grow to 18 cm (7 in) and their skin has a warty appearance and ranges from green to brown.

Toads generally hunt at night, and are most active in wet weather. As a defense against predators they secrete a toxic, foul tasting substance called bufagin. This is enough to deter many predators although grass snakes and hedgehogs are immune. Although the adults spend most of their time on land the females enter ponds and other still waters to lay their eggs, toadspawn, which can be distinguished from the spawn of the common frog as it forms strings rather than a large mass of eggs. Eggs are laid in the spring, with the females attempting to return to the water in which they were born.

If we hadn't seen it and stopped the car, it would have been a flat road toad I'm afraid..

Toad is a fictional character who primarily appears in Nintendo's Mario franchise. He obviously lives in a mushroom kingdom.

This was one of many Toads I encountered today. He's actually crawling up out of a deep boot print in the mud. It looked like hard work for him! I was drawn by his amazing eyes.

Best viewed large.
