Most of this account is concerned with the wonderful experience of our journey in a 50 year old 620 ton lake steamer, the Ilala, which pounds its way from Monkey Bay on the southern tip of the lake to Karonga near the northernmost tip of the lake. The distance is 356 miles. It does this return trip every week, calling at many villages carrying passengers and supplies both north and south. It is the only link many of these villages have with the outside world. The Ilala gets its name from the place where Dr. David Livingstone died.
