Wake, commissioned by the Times Square Alliance, is a presence evoking the hull of a shipwreck crossed with the skeletal remains of a marine mammal bleached by erosion and time. A larger-than-life ship’s figurehead based on Jenny Lind, the superstar of the 19th century, surveys the air above her. While offering a shift from the frenetic energy of the city, these works evoke the city’s triumphs, its grave dark past, and create and a place for contemplation.

Times Square in a Light Rain -- Today

Cort Theatre (1912)

Architect: Thomas W. Lamb

138 W. 48th St.

Times Square, New York

The theatre was built for impresario John Cort (1861–1929). New York–born but Seattle-based Cort partnered with John Considine and Alexander Pantages to create a circuit of theatres. Considine and Pantages concentrated on vaudeville, but Cort was interested in legitimate theatre.

Cort's initial New York production was the wildly successful PEG O' MY HEART (1912) with Laurette Taylor. The theatre gained a reputation as a "lucky" house and hosted such successes as John Drinkwater's ABRAHAM LINCOLN (1919), and Kaufman and Connelly's MERTON OF THE MOVIES (1922).

Cort opposed the Theatrical Syndicate, allying with the Shuberts, who took control of his New York theatre in 1927. Later hits included Laurence Olivier in THE GREEN BAY TREE (1933), Cedric Hardwicke and Marlon Brando in ANTIGONE and CANDIDA (1946), Grace Kelly in Strindberg's THE FATHER (1949), Geraldine Page in THE RAINMAKER (1954), THE DIARY OF ANNE FRANK (1955), THE MAGIC SHOW (1974), and Cherry Jones in THE HEIRESS (1995).

Thomas W. Lamb (1871–1942) was one of the preeminent theatre and cinema architects of the early 20th century. He is especially associated with the Fox, Loew's and Keith-Albee (RKO) theatre chains. His surviving movie palaces are admired to this day. In addition to the Eltinge, he also contributed the Cort (1912) and (with Joseph Urban) the Ziegfeld (1927–66) on Broadway and the Odeon (1910) in Harlem. His existing cinemas in New York include Fox's Audubon (1912), the Regent (1913), Keith's (later RKO) 81st Street (1913), Loew's Boulevard (1913) Loew's Victoria (1917), the Bedford (1913), the Brooklyn Strand (1918), Loew's Gates (1921), Loew's State (1924), the Brooklyn Savoy (1926), Loew's Pitkin (1928), Warner's Hollywood (later the legitimate Mark Hellinger, 1930), and Loew's 175th Street (1930).

A day shot of Times Square for a change!

In partnership with Shared_Studios, Times Square Arts brings the TimesSquare_Portal to the Broadway Plaza between 46th & 47th Street, allowing Times Square visitors to interact with people across thirty locations in twenty countries as though they are in the same room. The interactive public art installation will run from October 10 to November 21, 2017. All are invited to book free timed reservations in the Portal at www.TimesSquarePortal.com. Walk-ins are also welcome.

Shared_Studios' Portals are gold shipping containers equipped with immersive audio-visual technology. When participants enter one, they come face-to-face, live and full-body, with someone in an identical space somewhere else on earth. Portals exist in diverse locations including technology hubs, refugee camps, art museums, community centers, and public plazas. Locations include Afghanistan, Germany, Honduras, India, Iran, Iraq, Jordan, Kazakhstan, Kenya, Mexico, Myanmar, Pakistan, Palestine, Panama, Rwanda, Spain, the United Kingdom, the United States, Vietnam, and Yemen.

Each of the nearly seven weeks of this installation will explore a specific theme: Public Space, Food, Migration, Performance, Identity, Change, and Gratitude. In addition to hosting dialogues between individuals, the TimesSquare_Portal will host special conversations, meals, musical performances, and more. The most up-to-date list of events can be found at www.TimesSquarePortal.com.

Midnight Moment: Jodie Mack, Posthaste Perennial Pattern

September 1, 2018 - September 30, 2018

every night from 11:57pm-midnight

Experimental animator Jodie Mack creates handmade 16mm films that combine the formal techniques and structures of abstract, absolute animation with those of cinematic genres. Frequently made with collaged domestic materials, her work explores the relationship between fine-art abstraction and mass-produced, decorative imagery. Mack recycles and revives found materials from everyday life, and the stroboscopic effect in her animation imparts a kinetic energy to things we may otherwise deem banal. By embracing ornamental patterns and materials such as textiles, costume jewelry, and construction paper, Mack engages with a larger reframing of art history to include artistic modes such as craft and folk art, which were historically marginalized due to their associations with femininity, domesticity, or utility. This month's Midnight Moment is in partnership with Museum of Arts and Design.

Sometimes I hate being stuck in the UK - Fox have arranged for the trailer to be shown on the large screen in Times Square and have people dressed up as CTU agents, giving out freebies.

And here I am, missing this and stuck in the UK. :P
