Not so new actually.
Photography and photographic equipments have gone through lots of changes since the beginning. Some of us still look through view finders to take pictures. But our days may be numbered. This is how more than 90% of the people take pictures these days. Even DSLRs are now made with this option.
Time changes.
(After few atypical Times Square shots, here is a typical one)
[Mournful Guitar music…Very clear soprano voice sings, hitting every note.]

Ringmaster, interrupting: But Wait!!
[Mournful Guitar music screeches to a halt. Sounds of spruce guitar bodies smashing.]
[Very loud marching band music plays Sousa’s immortal masterpiece, Stars and Stripes Forever…Somewhere, raucous voices sing: ”Be kind to your web-footed friends, for a duck may be somebody’s mother…”]
Ringmaster: That’s right! A duck may be somebody’s mother, and what’s more, you can probably find her right down here in Times Square in New York City. Times Square is the greatest thoroughfare in the Entire World! Everyone knows about it, and Everyone passes by. It’s a pah-rade!

I photographed this around '74 on my Zeiss Ikon Contessa rangefinder on Kodachrome slide film. It sure looks a lot different down there now. Its starting to look like Blade Runner.
The smoking sign in Times Square blew about 1,000 rings a day; a steam-producing box, located behind the head of the man in the sign, created the rings.
The Winston sign had replaced the Camel sign, which operated from 1941 to 1966 on Broadway between Forty-third and Forty-fourth Streets.
