I really enjoy visiting the Amur tiger section at Longleat, as I find them extremely beautiful animals. The tigers at Longleat are well looked after, and the zoo keepers are very good at feeding times as they occasionally hide the meat in the branches of trees so that when the tigers are let into their enclosure they have to search for their food.

Amur tigers are fully mature and able to mate from 4 years of age. Their cubs are born small, helpless and blind and depend on their mother for safety and for the mother’s milk. Tiger cubs grow very fast and will be almost 4 times their original size after just one month.

The Amur tiger is also known as the Siberian tiger, and are considered to be the largest of all of the big cats. They have many stripes; however no two tigers have the same stripe pattern. Amur tigers are now protected by law in the wild and are linked to conservation projects.

There were surprisingly lots of tigers at the zoo... Probably around seven or eight, at least. There were also a trio of lions (2 females and a male) who were fun to watch. At one point, the two lady lions were on the roof of a building in their enclosure, watching a herd of tiny pigs (roaming freely) very closely... while the male lion was on his back, on the ground, sleeping, with his toes curled (much like a domestic cat).

Amazing creature, I was lucky enough to get a few snaps of this tiger before the school kids and students came along to spoil it, you don't really realise just how big these are until you see one up close, cropped the image a bit and levels but other than that it's as I took it

The tiger was a lot closer to the fence than I expected, watching us tourists with a disdainful look as it lounged in the afternoon heat. They have quite a bit of space, and this isn’t the only shade, which makes me think they were people watching. It’s an intriguing thought. And a disturbing one!
