Beach tiger beetles. The first I've seen in 2017. These were taken on Easter Sunday. It was 72°F ( 22°C).

I saw mostly Bronzed Tiger beetles, but this one looked a little different. It had a greenish tint (which might have been the odd sunlight angle) and its pale cream wing markings were connected along the base of the wing cover.

On Saturday, we got our first warm spell and it continued into Sunday. I was able to sneak away to the beach for about an hour, and sure enough, these guys had made it through the rough winter, and were scurrying all over the beach. They were NOT very accommodating, and I could not get close to any of them. All six of these images are highly cropped, and I was shooting into the afternoon sun.

The cubs are still too small to leave their den and are being attentively raised by their experienced mother, Delta. On Thursday, keepers gave Mom a short break to stretch her legs and get a little sun while they took the opportunity to socialize with the cubs. The 10- and 11-pound cubs are being desensitized to human touch in anticipation of vaccines and other necessary veterinary care.

“Bengal Tiger” - After spending about two to three years with their mother, the cubs establish their own territories. Sometimes, especially if the cub is a female, this new territory is close to the mother's. In the wild, tigers can live from 15 to 20 years, and up to 25 years in captivity.

Panthera tigris

Tigers live alone and aggressively scent-mark large territories to keep their rivals away. They are powerful nocturnal hunters that travel many miles to find buffalo, deer, wild pigs, and other large mammals. Tigers use their distinctive coats as camouflage (no two have exactly the same stripes). They lie in wait and creep close enough to attack their victims with a quick spring and a fatal pounce. A hungry tiger can eat as much as 60 pounds (27 kilograms) in one night, though they usually eat less.

Despite their fearsome reputation, most tigers avoid humans; however, a few do become dangerous maneaters. These animals are often sick and unable to hunt normally, or live in an area where their traditional prey has vanished.

Females give birth to litters of two to six cubs, which they raise with little or no help from the male. Cubs cannot hunt until they are 18 months old and remain with their mothers for two to three years, when they disperse to find their own territory.

This tiger guarded its 'kill' fairly badly, as a smaller one successfully sneaked up and stole its meal from under its nose a few minutes after this shot was taken.
