An Alco RS-3 rots in the woods not far from Schenectady, N.Y., where it was built. I always liked the lines of this classic midsized workhorse, but wondered about the visibility — every window makes the engineer look around the locomotive’s nose.
This is one of a several pieces of old railroad equipment, including a unique historic gem, that sat for decades along the Hudson River awaiting a restoration that never came. Now they’ve got to be moved, as the woods will be bulldozed and replaced by a factory that will fabricate the towers for the wind farm to be erected in the Atlantic Ocean.
(The title of the photo has as much to do with the clock winding down on these locomotives as with the swarms of blood-sucking arachnids that populate the area.)
We found this inquisitive stray puppy in a small village in central Nepal, the ticks on his eyes didn't seem to stop him from wanting to play!

Macro Mondays Theme: Games People Play
Finally decided which shot to use after taking the shot that I had a brainwave about whilst trying to sleep last night! I originally remembered about Pass The Bomb the day after the anything that ticks theme and was gutted I hadn't thought about it in time. At least I can use it for this theme!
Pass the Bomb is a word game where you have to make words which include letters printed on the card before the bomb goes off. It ticks for a random amount of time and if you're holding the bomb when it goes off, you lose the game!
Thanks for looking, HMM!
There are a one or two hidden treats but I wanted to save a few surprises for my partner...I'll share more once it's arrived at it's new home.
I must say, I have really loved making this pillow, every stitch has been a pleasure :)
Ticks are probably my most despised of all macroscopic organisms, and yet they are as beautiful and interesting as any. I see them waiting like this on leaves and grasses all the time in the San Bernardino and San Gabriel mountain ranges. Luckily I have not been bitten yet (in California, at least). I thought this one was particularly attractive for a tick.
35-shot stack, natural light, somewhere around 5x.
Made the trip bright and early Saturday morning to check out the wildflowers at Rowena. Leaving the house the sky looked promising despite the weather forecast of rain all day. So around Multnomah Falls, the rain started lightly and close to Hood River the heavy rain started as well as my weather anxiety, but amazingly enough a few short miles up the freeway by the Rowena exit, there was a few breaks in the clouds and no rain and no wind. As I grabbed my gear and started looking around for wild flowers in the dark, my partner in crime for the day Aaron Reed shows up. Its no secret Aaron has a tick-phobia so it was not a big surprise to see him in full waders and a scuba mask, swatting at himself constantly and mumbling expletives at the little burring bloodsuckers. In fact he swears they were taunting him, setting traps for him and he even saw one saddle up a huge mother bee to fly after him! Although the sunrise never really happened, it was still a great morning and day scouting around and trying to dodge the crazy weather we had this weekend!
After seeing this Dermacentor tick on top of the grass I couldn't resist the urge to make a stack... :)

Whoa I've loaded some gross stuff today. Despite searching, we missed the fact that the dog had picked up this tick. He'd been very unhappy about something on his back end and we'd searched and searched but failed to find it. It dropped off on the carpet at home. I'd seen that the cat and dog were fascinated by something on the carpet, but I took a while to investigate. Yuck!

CSX Y295 on the Rattlesnake spur during a beautiful Sunday sunset in 2022. The scene here is very reminiscent of North River Drive in Miami. Sadly time is ticking for rail service as developers are having their grip on the rapidly gentrifying area.
First encounter with this parasitic arachnid maybe a Hyalomma lusitanicum

My friends don't walk, they run
Skinny dip in rabbit holes for fun
Popping, popping balloons with guns, getting high off helium
We paint white roses red
Each shade from a different person's head
This dream, dream is a killer
Getting drunk with the blue caterpillar
I'm peeling the skin off my face
'Cause I really hate being safe
The normals, they make me afraid
The crazies, they make me feel sane
I'm nuts, baby, I'm mad
The craziest friend that you've ever had
You think I'm psycho, you think I'm gone
Tell the psychiatrist something is wrong
Over the bend, entirely bonkers
You like me best when I'm off my rocker
Tell you a secret, I'm not alarmed
So what if I'm crazy? The best people are
All the best people are crazy, all the best people are
Where is my prescription?
Doctor, doctor please listen
My brain is scattered
You can be Alice, I'll be the mad hatter
I'm peeling the skin off my face
'Cause I really hate being safe
The normals, they make me afraid
The crazies, they make me feel sane
I'm nuts, baby, I'm mad,
The craziest friend that you've ever had
You think I'm psycho, you think I'm gone
Tell the psychiatrist something is wrong
Over the bend, entirely bonkers
You like me best when I'm off my rocker
Tell you a secret, I'm not alarmed
So what if I'm crazy? The best people are
You think I'm crazy, you think I'm gone
So what if I'm crazy? All the best people are
And I think you're crazy too, I know you're gone
That's probably the reason that we get along
I'm nuts, baby, I'm mad,
The craziest friend that you've ever had
You think I'm psycho, you think I'm gone
Tell the psychiatrist something is wrong
Over the bend, entirely bonkers
You like me best when I'm off my rocker
Tell you a secret, I'm not alarmed
So what if I'm crazy? The best people are
All the best people are crazy, all the best people are
All the best people are crazy, all the best people are
Upset with all his brethren invading its fishing territory, this Snowy Egret decided to flex it's muscle (and it's feathers) in a successful attempt to protect it's resources.
Lyme Park
The face of this clock is on the southern exterior wall of Lyme House. This exposed mechanism indicates that it was made by William Leigh.
William Leigh (1763-1824) worked as a clockmaker in Newton-le-Willows. He was responsible for making many of the clocks for churches and country houses throughout the north west of England.
