the mouse ran up the clock, bc im pretty sure there are mice at lydian and they have lots of parties at night

it is really hard to take a clear picture of the back of ones arm. There is a faint dot in the middle and a circle around it making it a 'bulls eye" pattern. No itch, and it's not raised up. My mom, stepmom, and dad all pointed this out to me at different times. I didn't even know I had it and no idea what this is from either. Everyone says tick bite or ringworm.

EDIT 7/3/08 : It is definitely a tick bite. I tested positive for lyme disease and went through a 3 week course of Doxycyclin. Supposedly that's all I have to do. If I'd taken a photo sooner, it would have been a clearer bullseye.

Curtis went out on a lazer tag excursion with his school in the bush and managed to pick up a cattle tick :/. We got it out, and all is well!

We bought a new huge clock which I hung yesterday. Perfect for a day when I feel under the weather and haven't moved much...

Ixodes holocyclus

Family: Ixodidae

Order: Ixodida

Superorder: Parisitiformes

Class Arachnida

The Australian paralysis tick is one of 75 species of tick in Australia. The Paralysis Tick can be confused with other species such as the Brown Dog Tick.

This photo shows the hypostome, the barbed mouthparts of the tick. At the end of the hypostome are the chelicerae or cutting parts for penetrating the skin of the host. The palps are sensory organs that assist in guiding the hypostome into position. They are shown spayed out in the picture but are normally held close to the hypostome when not feeding.

In this photo, we can see the front pair of legs and the rear pair are darker than the others. This is a distinguishing feature of Ixodes holocyclus as is the shape of the palps and the lack of festoons (around the rear margin of the back half of the tick’s body). The hypostome is barbed which is also a feature found in I. holocyclus. The anal groove forming a line anterior to the anus is a characteristic of Ixodes spp.

This species is the most medically significant of the Australian Ticks and can inject toxins into its host. According to the NSW Health authority, early symptoms in humans include “rashes, headache, fever, flu like symptoms, tenderness of lymph nodes, unsteady gait, intolerance to bright light, increased weakness of the limbs and partial facial paralysis”. Symptoms can increase as the tick feeds.

The species is known as a vector of several pathogens including Tick Typhus and potentially bacteria which may be responsible for symptoms that resemble Lyme's disease. The Australian government does not support a diagnosis of Lymes disease originating in Australia, as the causing Bacterium species, Borrelia burgdorferi , is not present in Australia. However, it is without doubt that Lymes-like symptoms are known in Australia and it is likely that ticks in Australia are vectors for a bacterial species related to Borrelia burgdorferi .

Tick expert Ken Kwok had this to say in response to a query about the role of 'festoons' in identification:

"See the first couplet in a visual key to the Aussie paralysis ticks I published some years back (Kwak 2017). The festoons are a feature of the non-Ixodes hard ticks (Metastriata). They are a series of grooves along the posterior edge of the idiosoma which can be very obvious in unfed adults but become far more challenging to see in fed adults and in immature stages."

Ken's key will be incorporated in the comment below if he gives permission for me to do so.

Here a picture of the little bastard i found stuck to my body. I tried to pull him off, like I've done a hundred times before with Brown Ticks, but this guy's head broke off and stayed behind.

Removed from my dog after a trip to the Lake District. A few days later I found one on myself :-(

I don't like ticks!

Day 145 - Tick, you are!

Today I played again with the cat. I wanted to play ticking, but the cat has not cooperated... He just lay around and slept. Finally, I've ticked directly on the nose... and then I went very fast very far away. Now he's looking for me, but I hid myself. Where, I'll tell you tomorrow ;)

Seats at Old Trafford

Old Trafford is an all-seater football stadium in the Trafford borough of Greater Manchester, England. With space for 76,212 spectators, Old Trafford has the second-largest capacity of any English football stadium after Wembley Stadium, with which it is one of two stadia in the country to have been given a five-star rating by UEFA. The stadium is approximately 0.5 miles (0.8 km) from Old Trafford Cricket Ground and the adjacent Manchester Metrolink tram station.

The ground, given the nickname the Theatre of Dreams by Bobby Charlton, is the home of Manchester United and has been the club's permanent residence since 1910, with the exception of an eight-year absence from 1941 to 1949, following the bombing of the stadium in the Second World War. During this period, the club shared Maine Road with local rivals, Manchester City. The ground underwent several expansions in the 1990s and 2000s, most notably the addition of extra tiers to the North, West and East stands which served to return the ground almost to its original capacity of 80,000. Future expansion is likely to involve the addition of a second tier to the South Stand, which would raise the capacity to over 90,000. The stadium's current record attendance was recorded in 1939, when 76,962 spectators watched the FA Cup semi-final between Wolverhampton Wanderers and Grimsby Town.

The ground has frequently hosted FA Cup semi-final matches as a neutral venue and several England international fixtures while the new Wembley Stadium was under construction. It also hosted matches at the 1966 FIFA World Cup and Euro 96 and the 2003 UEFA Champions League Final. Aside from football-related uses, Old Trafford has hosted Super League's Grand Final since the rugby league's adoption of playoffs in 1998 and the final of the 2000 Rugby League World Cup.

Missed the last two theme days so the clock provided both the selfie and the multiple exposure. Three frames combined in camera.

Three Australian Paralysis ticks, Ixodes holocyclus. The brown shape on the left is a small granule of coffee. These ticks if left undected can lead to severe sickness and used to kill before an effective antitoxin. Many pets die every year from this parasites.

All of these plus two more, found later, were removed from me after working in the garden.

Yes, time for a change, indeed! Well not too much of a change but tomorrow my wife, son, his wife and little Joshua and of course myself are off to a beautiful hotel in the Highlands - just an overnight but we are all in need of some "chill-time!"

Tiny tick, a species of Ixodidae, about 0.5 mm across. Turners Flat, NSW, Australia, December 2014.

Strobist: Umbrella + Sigma 560 1/32 above

Ixodes sp., probably Ixodes ricinus, the Deer Tick, Sheep Tick or Castor Bean Tick, a larva, approximately 0.7mm long and with its mouthparts firmly embedded in my skin. To provide a sense of scale, the distance between the tick larva and the red spot on my skin is approximately 6mm. The larva was 'collected' from Woodwalton Fen NNR on August 10, 2022 and photographed at home shortly after discovery the following day.

Even if you have smooth skin, these tiny flesh-coloured larvae, scarcely larger than a grain of sand, are almost impossible to spot until the bite-site starts to become reddened and itchy. Although the majority of tick-borne infections are thought to be acquired from tick nymphs, a 2015 study in the US has indicated that larvae can also acquire infections via transovarial transmission from an infected parent.

Now, where did I put the tweezers...

Black-legged ticks that can transmit Lyme Disease, Anaplasmosis and Babesiosis are encountered in areas that maintain moisture, such as tall grass and wooded areas. By staying on trails and avoiding tick habitat you can avoid a tick encounter. For more information on ticks: www.nysipm.cornell.edu/whats_bugging_you/ticks/default.asp

Brooklyn Bowl - December 30, 2015

The tick sticky trap consists of a piece of plywood with double-sided carpet tape around the inside of the board and a cooler with dry ice in the middle. The ticks are attracted to the CO2 emitted from the cooler and get stuck on the double-sided carpet tape when they try to cross it.

Sorry, another tea shot! But this is kind of different. I just don't happen to find any time for a decent picture! I'll do the tag when I take something I actually like. Hopefully over the weekend...

I hope you're all having a fantastic thursday! Mine isn't actually fun, I have to study latin. My professor oral tested me the other day and I did well, everything correct. I'm quite satisfied since I didn't study that well :)

I've just found a second tick on my neck this time .. Arrghhhh .. :)
