the mri was really not bad. it took about 25 minutes or so. I had earplugs in but I could still hear the noise that my mom described as "sounding like the 'aliens' in Contact." It is very industrial sounding.
I have tons of photos of the knee now. It's very cool/interesting. Is my medial meniscus torn? I'm not sure. If so, it's a pretty minor or hard to see tear I think (and in this shot it looks 100% fine, it's other shots that make it look like there might be a tear). I meet with my orthopaedist tomorrow to discuss the MRI results.
Until then, I stare at cool pictures of my knee.

Mosaic absorption (ln(I0 /I)) image of trabecula from
mouse tibia at 5.4 keV (left side). Trabecula was imaged every 58
from -90 to 90 to determine 3D geometry. Scale bar is 25 mm.
Numbered slices reconstructed at horizontal lines on the left are
depicted on the right. Average attenuation values determined for
the rectangular regions on the slices were 300–365 cm-1 in platelike
regions and 345–370 cm11 in rod-like trabecular regions, or
44–53% and 51–54% of rod-like crystalline chlorapatite, respectively.
Lucy develoepd sudden lameness in her right hindleg. She didn't response to pain relief and deteriorated quickly. Re-examination showed a new swelling around her distal tibia/fibulae. We sedated her and took xrays and discovered she had suspect osteosarcoma lesion. We collected fine needle aspirates of the lesion & sent them off to the lab. It was confirmed to be an osteosarcoma. :-(

The Catacombs of Paris are an underground ossuary located south of the former city gate near Place Denfert-Rochereau. It holds the remains of about 6 million people and fills a renovated section of caverns and tunnels that are the remains of Paris's stone mines. Opened in the late 18th century, the underground cemetery became a tourist attraction on a small scale from the early 19th century, and has been open to the public on a regular basis from 1874. Some of the arrangements are almost artistic in nature, such as a heart-shaped outline in one wall formed with skulls embedded in surrounding tibias; another is a round room whose central pillar is also a carefully created 'keg' bone arrangement. Pollinator plants and insects (such as this Echinacea and bumblebee) are busy gathering pollen an area of the People's Garden that have flowering plants that attract and help polinator in Washington, D.C., on Wednesday, June 22, 2016. #PeoplesGarden. The pollen baskets are easily seen on it's hind legs. The pollen basket or corbicula is part of the tibia on the hind legs of certain species of bees. They use the structure in harvesting pollen and returning it to the nest or hive. Lucy develoepd sudden lameness in her right hindleg. She didn't response to pain relief and deteriorated quickly. Re-examination showed a new swelling around her distal tibia/fibulae. We sedated her and took xrays and discovered she had suspect osteosarcoma lesion. We collected fine needle aspirates of the lesion & sent them off to the lab. It was confirmed to be an osteosarcoma. :-(
Based on hind tibia, this is not Dephacidae, Fulgoridae, Achilidae, Meenoplidae, Derbidae, Dictyopharidae, Cixiidae, Kinnariidae, Ricaniidae, Lophopidae, Eurybrachidae. It is possible this is Tropiduchidae, Flatidae, Nogodinidae, Issidae. Likely, Flatidae.

Authorities are raising sand level at Scheveningen beach. For this suppletion they need about 400.000 m3 sand, collected 10 km's offshore. Together with the sand, many fish, crustaceans, etc are deposited at the beach, attracting 1.500+ gulls, most Herring Gulls.

These are the remains of one of the Mososocus barkflies found in Gelt Wood on 16 June 17, as shown in Photo 9 of the montage posted a few months ago (see my Barkflies (Cumbria) Album).
Unfortunately I didn't know at the time that such insects need to be stored in alcohol rather than dry, and so it's not currently in great condition. Nevertheless, I thought I'd see if I could extract any potentially useful information using my recently acquired SX10D microscope.
One question I wanted to answer was whether the specimen was an adult or late-instar nymph. According to Ref 1, adults have 13 antennal segments and three tarsomeres, whereas nymphs have a lesser number of the first and only two of the second. It can be seen from the photo that both of the antennae have 9 segments, but the case is less clear with regard to the tarsus: the first tarsomere is well defined, but it's not obvious whether the remaining length (as far as the claw) comprises one or two components. There is certainly a discernible change in profile about two-fifths of the way along, but perhaps this feature is present in the later-instar nymphs but without a functioning joint? The only other option is that both antennae have lost their four last segments, which presumably can't be ruled out.* So the question remains unanswered!
The image on the left is a ventral view with what is presumably the sub-genital plate boxed in red. The shape of the apex of this feature in adults can be used to distinguish between M. unipunctatus and M. immunis. This is something I'll need to look into for next year...

Note 1: the first and third shots were taken at 20x magnification and the central one at 40x. The insect - excluding antennae - was measured at about 3mm in length and the tibia at about 1.5mm in length.
*Note 2 (added 27 November 17): Now that I've had more experience of examining dead insects I think the "missing" antennal segments were probably knocked off during handling!
