Thyroid disease can range from a small goiter (enlarged gland) that does not require treatment to a life-threatening condition. Inappropriate production of thyroid hormones is the most frequently occurring thyroid problem.
Hyperthyroidism is a condition caused by an excess of thyroid hormone. Hypothyroidism is caused by a lack of hormone production. Although side effects can be unpleasant or uncomfortable, most thyroid disorders can be effectively managed if they are properly recognized and treated.

Neko was treated for hyper-thyroidism, a condition where a tumour within the thyroid glad over-produces various hormones. This results in a variety of symptoms, from weight loss (see how skinny she is now compared to before - she lost over 2 kg), excessive moulting, constant thirst, over-eating, etc.
The treatment consists of Neko being injected with radioactive iodine, which is absorbed by the tumour and kills the affected cells (leaving the healthy ones alone - clever!)
So now I have a radioactive cat! (For about another week, anyway, before it dissipates).
I am looking for the first signs of mutant super-powers developing, but so far, no luck.

Last year, we had a huge scare when Abbie was diagnosed with thyroid cancer. We became concerned when she was not able to keep any weight on despite having a great appetite. Her vet run a blood test and discovered that she had a hyperactive thyroid gland. Many tests later, including an iodine scan, Abbie had surgery to remove the cancerous tumors. Her surgeon was confident that she had removed all of it but when the biopsy came back it showed the margins near zero. The recommendation was for chemo and radiation. Now for a little background….
Abbie is a rescue that we adopted when she was 10 months old. Her previous people could not handle her energy level (pointers NEED to fly!) so they locked her in a small cage and pushed food through to her. She was left there for weeks. Our kind neighbor noticed and asked me to help with the rescue. It was love at first sight. The toughest part was convincing the owners that Abbie would be better off with us. What a gift! She is the gentlest, kindest soul. Her early traumatic cage experience causes her to totally panic if she is left alone. Enter dog #2. (A story for another day!)
So… After the surgery they wanted to treat her with very strong radiation, requiring her to be in isolation for about 4 weeks. If we didn’t do it, they estimated she would not make it for a year. This is a dog who panics after 10 minutes and bloodies her paws trying to break out at the vets when undergoing routine tests. We knew the isolation would kill her before the cancer did, so we opted out of the treatment. Let her spend her last days on the beach chasing birds. But a miracle happened when we took her back for her annual checkup. She is now apparently cancer free, with many more years in front of her to make sure the birds on the beach get their exercise. Who says the good die young!

Apitope has taken a step closer to developing the first new treatment option for thyroid disorder Graves’ disease in decades after posting positive results in a first-in-human trial of its ATX-GD-59 antibody.
The U.K. and Belgium-based biotech said the phase 1 trial shows signs of efficacy in the majority of patients with Graves, an autoimmune disease affecting up to 10 million people across the U.S. and Europe that leads to an overgrowth of the thyroid gland.
Armed with the clinical data, Apitope said it intends to press on with a phase 2 trial in the first quarter of 2019, giving it a second mid-stage clinical candidate to sit alongside multiple sclerosis therapy ATX-MS-1467.
In Graves’ disease, the immune system mistakenly attacks the thyroid gland, causing it to become overactive and enlarged. Excess levels of thyroid hormones in turn can cause skin abnormalities, tremors, weight loss, osteoporosis and eye complications including blindness.
ATX-GD-59 is designed to reduce levels of thyroid hormones by targeting the underlying immunological basis of the disease and in the study was able to reduce levels of thyroid stimulating hormone receptor (TSHR) antibodies “with close correlations between percentage decreases in antibody and thyroid hormone levels in line with the mechanism of action.”
There are already drugs available such as methimazole and propylthiouracil that try to block the production of thyroid hormones, but these have a high failure rate, according to endocrinology professor Simon Pearce, M.D., of Newcastle University in the U.K., the lead investigator in Apitope’s trial.
Second-line treatment is limited to invasive surgery and radioiodine therapy to destroy the thyroid, and means patients have to take lifelong thyroid hormone replacement therapy, while in some cases surgery can result in scarring and vocal cord damage.
“ATX-GD-59 demonstrates the potential to address the high medical need for a new, safe and effective treatment for the neglected field of those suffering from Graves’ disease,” said professor Pearce.
Apitope’s decision to move ahead with the program comes against a backdrop of very little R&D effort in Graves’ disease, and what seems to be some recent failures.
GlaxoSmithKline spinout Thyritope Biosciences was launched in 2014 to work in this area, but now seems to be inactive. Novartis has also been developing CD40 antigen inhibitor CFZ533 in phase 2 for the disease, but only lists organ transplantation as a target indication for that drug in its latest pipeline update. A small, investigator-led trial of a TSHR-blocking antibody (K1-70) is underway in the U.K., with results due in 2020.
Last October, Apitope said it intended to raise new funds through an IPO on the Euronext exchange in order to provide funds for the development of its clinical pipeline, including the MS program and a third in uveitis—but hasn’t yet followed through on those plans.
“These findings are important for Graves’ disease patients in providing a potential new treatment paradigm aimed at the cause of the disease not just the symptoms,” said Apitope’s CEO Keith Martin Ph.D.
“We’re highly encouraged by these data as they provide further evidence that our Apitope platform identifies safe and effective treatments for autoimmune diseases,” he added.

Although Dr Ahmad attended graduate school and his medical residency in the east coast, the mountain west is where he feels most at home. A long-term California resident before the love of the outdoors brought him to Utah by way of Montana. short to hide how much hair I had lost. I'm having trouble not tearing
up because these pictures are bringing back memories of the utter
exhaustion, the despair, the fear, the sense of loss and the terrible

Sam's been getting a bit short shrift, photographically. It's probably because he doesn't usually cuddle, except in bed at night. He'll pretty much never sit on your lap on the couch because he's somehow anti-couch, always has been.
Sam is our "6 million dollar cat," as I like to say. He's a runt - at nearly 16 years old, he's still tiny and rather kittenish - less than half Harlan's weight. He's also something of a medical marvel. He's diabetic (he gets two shots of insulin a day), has a thyroid condition (which means I get to shove a pill down his throat twice a day, if I can manage it), he has a nervous condition which makes him overgroom himself, so he sometimes has to have steroid or cortisone shots, and he's had two knee surgeries stemming from tearing BOTH his ACLs within about 18 months of each other. He is, according to our vet, the longest-living diabetic cat the vet had ever met or heard of - especially impressive considering he's had glucose crashes at least three times, requiring emergency stabilization. Yep, he's a marvel. And also one of the sweetest cats I've ever met.
Today, however, he and Harlan are both on my shit list. First, Sam woke me at 6 (he's very loud), then later he decided I wasn't paying enough attention to him, so he tried to get on top of my laptop, stepping on the mousepad and the keyboard and seriously frakking SOMETHING up. Now the tap function is screwed up - I can go in and reset it and it's okay for a little while, but it stops working shortly (especially, it seems, after I use Twitterfox). The cursor keeps flitting all over the place, too, so that in the middle of typing something, I realize that half the last word has been inserted into the middle of a sentence three lines up. Very annoying. Harlan's on notice, too. He got pissed off at me this morning (I think this is the explanation, who can be sure?) for letting Sam basically SIT on him on the bed, and he decided to act on it by peeing on the floor of the room I was sitting in. A half hour later, he wanted me to love on him. Nope.
It's a good thing they're cute.
