Hypothyroidism is when the thyroid gland does not make enough thyroid hormone and is very common among women of reproductive age. Approximately 5% of women don’t know that they have underlying thyroid issues.
Common symptoms:
-fatigue
-cold intolerance
-weight gain
-constipation
-delayed reflexes
Common gynecologic symptoms:
-heavy or irregular periods
-discharge from the breasts
-anovulation (ovulation kit with a consistently negative result and a common cause of infertility).

Goiter is the enlargement of the thyroid gland. It is not cancerous. A person with goiter can have normal levels of thyroid hormone (euthyroidism), excessive levels (hyperthyroidism) or levels that are too low (hypothyroidism).

My dear Charlie was diagnosed with hyperthyroidism. He has a tumor on his thyroid gland. I lost a cat to this awful disease a couple of years ago, and, when Charlie was diagnosed, I didn't think I could put him through what she went through. I prayed and prayed, stayed up all night, and researched this malady online. Dr. Mark Peterson's name kept cropping up. He discovered this disease, and is the premier animal endocrinologist in the country--and he's here in New York. He pioneered radioiodine treatment, which has a 95%+ cure rate, and is the only treatment that gets rid of the tumor. I knew this was the right thing to do for Charlie (I only wish I'd known about it for Miss Kitty). I didn't know how I would afford it; but God is faithful, and He gave me a miracle. Some government agency paid my entire rent this month (I didn't even apply for this), and part of next month's as well, and I suddenly got several dog-sitting jobs. Fully half of his treatment is paid for already. He is in the Hypurrcat spa, Dr. Peterson's hospital here in NYC, and it is well-named. He went in on Tuesday, got his treatment, and is coming home on Saturday. He has his own double kitty "penthouse". He (and the other kitties) have kitty t.v. (birds), and two large windows with bird feeders outside. He has lots of attention, a webcam camera that I am linked to so that I can see him 24--7, and they call me to report on him every day. And tonight I got an email letting me know that his pictures have been posted on Facebook. I would never have imagined that such a dreadful diagnosis would lead to such a wonderful experience. Dr. Peterson and his staff are amazing. I am so blessed.
My overgrown thyroid and I had to go our separate ways on Monday morning. I'm waiting for my calcium levels to normalize and recovering quite well otherwise. Oh - and I'm not to be operating any machinery or heavy equipment - cameras excluded. I hope - ha ha!
My daughter was in a car accident in March 2011 and totaled her car. When I arrived on scene, she was hysterical, and I was asked if I wanted her to go to the hospital in an ambulance or by car. I chose to take her myself. A CT scan of her neck revealed she had nodules on her thyroid. A biopsy of her neck a few weeks later revealed her thyroid was saturated with cancer cells and had to be removed. She had her thyroid surgically removed in the Summer of 2011. Because of her car accident, it saved her from years of continuing health problems and prevented the cancer from spreading to other parts of her body, which could have been deadly.
She was only 19 years old when the cancer was found.
She's 22 now and doing fine.
I made this little plushie thyroid for a friend that had to have his thyroid removed due to cancer. He is all better now!
I had to go in for a biopsy today on my thyroid. It showed that I am cancer free!! Praise God!! Now we just have to figure out what this little guy is and what he is doing to my dear thyroid. This is my darling husband holding my hand before they started poking needles in my neck - while that was happening the grasp was a wee little bit tighter.. But he didn't even complain.

Thyroïde de requin. L'image pointe sur un follicule thyroïdien, unité fonctionnelle de cette glande endocrine. Les follicules, à l'instar de ceux des poissons osseux, sont arrondis et présentent une cavité centrale remplie de colloïde (bleu métallique), forme de stockage des hormones thyroïdiennes. Ils sont séparés par des travées conjonctives (bleu foncé) en continuité avec la capsule de collagène qui délimite distinctement la glande chez les Chondrichtyens. Les cellules épithéliales, ou thyréocytes, entourant chaque follicule sont cubiques ou prismatiques, à cytoplasme clair (en rose) et noyau basal (en rouge). En comparant avec P12d_004, on remarque un épithélium plus haut et de petites vacuoles périphériques (incolores), signes d’une activité glandulaire plus importante. This magnification exhibits a thyroid follicle that represents
the functional unit of this endocrine gland. The follicles are spherical or ovoidal structures which cavities filled with colloid (ice blue). The thyroid follicles are surrounded and bound together by connective tissue (collagen in deep blue). All cartilaginous fishes have a thyroid contained within a connective tissue capsule. The follicular cells form a tight epithelium (in pink with red nuclei) and have microvilli (slightly discernible here) projecting into the follicular lumen. As compared to P12d_004 the height of the epithelium is taller and there are some reabsorption vacuoles (unstained) : these two observations indicate a more active thyroid gland. Striations in the colloid are artefacts.
