A very rare selfie from me with a couple of befores and an after my operation. So that's half my thyroid gone - just waiting for the tests now to see if any further treatment is required.
Tansy has now reached the ripe old age of 17. Apart from a heart murmur, an over-active thyroid, and occasionally breath that smells as though it has come from satan's bottom, she's in reasonably good health.
[March 2007: Sadly, it didn't last, poor old Tanz health problems caught up with her, and she recently passed away at home, in the sunshine]
My health is the height of my frustrations. So many issues revolve around Thyroid malfunction and in my case, double Thyroid cancer with total extraction. I'm a few years removed from surgery, but still deal with the frustrations of not having health care (another frustration in itself - I'll spare you all) and not knowing if I am cancer free or not. But this medication, that I cannot live without and all the side effects I endure from it, frustrate me daily. The glasses represent one side effect of the medication, my extreme blurred vision of print and details. The photo was taken on a scale to represent the severe weight issues as well... This could go on like War and Peace, so I'll resist and stop here.

Healthy thyroid means healthy functioning of all the organs of the body. This asana diverts the flow of blood into the thyroid glands and promotes their health. It tones up the blood circulatory system, the respiratory system, the digestive system and the excretory system.
This is a re-post of a photo from May, 2009. Many of my contacts have been keeping up with Scooter's story in Lynda's extensive posts on Flickr. For those unfamiliar, she had a bout of thyroid cancer in July 2009, went through surgery and recovered well. Then we found a lump in her neck that turned out to be a melanoma. Again she had surgery and we tried a new vaccine, with a 70% success rate. Scooter was in the other 30%...Three weeks ago X rays showed it had metastasized to her lungs and her days were numbered. we started making every day a Make A Wish Foundation Day. She went to the beach with her uncle John twice to visit the many friends she had made there over the years (he took her for a week each year), had leisurely walks to lots of new places, enjoyed no longer having diet restrictions - including a new tradition of ice cream every day, and constant love and affection, as was her just due. She was slowing noticeably, but still engaged and in good spirits. The past few days she began to experience labored breathing and earlier this evenings she had a sudden decline. We had hoped for our vet to come for a home visit at the end but we were suffering as much, if not more than her, watching her gasping for breath. Her uncle John came over and we took her in together to our emergency vet and said our goodbyes and watched her sink into unconscious relief and release. She leaves a big hole in our lives and hearts.....
Under went some surgery to remove some thyroid cancer and I (of course) developed a blood clot in my leg shortly after the surgery. Now the hospitals don't keep you in the hospital for blood clots now, they send you home with a package that contains biohazard box and instructions on how to give yourself shots twice a day in your tummy for seven days. OMG, it wasn’t fun at all. For a little over two weeks I couldn’t wear anything but loose fitting sweat pants. As I was told they didn’t flatter me at all. Ha! These are healing after about four days of NO shots. I don’t have a photo of my neck where the surgery took place available at this time however it’s healed nicely. I have taken a radioactive iodine treatment to see if the cancer is gone. I go Saturday to have a PET scan to see if I require more surgery or another more invasive radioactive iodine treatment that I will have to be hospitalized and put in isolation for three to four days and then they perform another scan to see if it killed all the cancer. Fun times I tell ya. When I get my pictures from my total thyroidectomy I’ll post them. I need to find them first. This is the first time I’ve been on the computer in quit a while. Radioactive stuff in your body tends to make you feel like crap. I’m also on this low iodine diet and it sucks big time. I never realized how many things I can’t eat due to it. One would think my belly should be slimmer, maybe if it wasn’t swollen it might be? Ha! Okay, time to rest….

Looking better, still off work because it's swollen. When I lay down the scar is hard and tight. It feel constricted and it's hard to breathe. I do have to say that overall I am feeling much better then when I first had the procedure done but I am feeling tired and it feels like I am in a fog but my doc appointment is this Monday to check my thyroid levels. Maybe I just need an adjustment in my meds to get my energy back.
If you've been following Tazzy's story, you'll know that she had a trip to the vet today. She's been with my friend Bev for over 3 weeks now and has been taking her thyroid medication every day.
Poor Tazzy started her day with no breakfast, and nothing to drink, to prepare her for an anaesthetic if necessary. She didn't understand at all, poor girl. Bev felt so bad about it that she couldn't even eat her own breakfast until Tazzy had left for the vets! She was there all day, but is back with Bev again now. Taz has had 6 teeth removed, which wasn't really a surprise. She's had her ears thoroughly cleaned and Bev said the damaged one seems to be standing up a bit more now. She's had a LOT of fur shaved off to deal with the poor state of her coat (sounds like Bev will need to keep her away from mirrors for a while). Blood test results for her thyroid, heart and kidneys should be back tomorrow. A new worry is that she had a lump removed from near her spine, which was bigger than they'd thought. It's been sent off for analysis.
All in all, poor Tazzy's had a pretty stressful day. The fact that she's had so many procedures carried out today gives me hope, though, that the vet thinks she's strong enough to face whatever comes next.
I'll go and see Taz tomorrow morning and I'm still keeping everything crossed for her. I'm afraid there may not be many photos of her for a while. A cat has her dignity after all...

Note added later: A couple of people have mentioned Tazzy's ear. I'm sorry I haven't been very clear about it. A large part of one of her ears is missing - perhaps bitten off in a fight, anything else is too hard to think about - and what remains of the ear has been folded almost flat. It seems that the attention she received today has made the stump of her ear stand up a bit more.

Synthroid is the name of a Thyroid medication.
This drawing was one that I started a while back. I drew the eye and the hearts years ago and couldn't figure out what I wanted to do with the rest, so I gave up on it. I tossed it aside into my junk paper. Just last year I stumbled across it again and I got that feeling again of "This needs to be finished". So I spent a whole night working on this one. I'm glad I held onto it for 2 years (un-finished)

gland. In cartilaginous fish and few bony fish the thyroid gland is a single compact gland covered by a connective tissue capsule (collagen in green - 1). Pear-shaped, it lies ventrally on the anterior bifurcation of the ventral aorta (2) coming from the conus arteriosus. Numerous green-turquoise stained follicles are found. Their size largely depends on the section angle. The follicular structure of this thyroid gland is remarkably similar to that found in mammals. It is relatively easy to remove this organ by cutting connective fibres along the arteriai wall (adventitia - 3).

For those of you who follow the saga of my cat, Tigger, I thought an update was in order.
Tigger has been struggling over the last few months. He lost a great deal of weight, and we found out that his thyroid was over active, and he was placed on medication to slow it down. However, even with that and upping his dose of appetite stimulants to twice a day, Tigger's weight went down instead of up, and now he's barely holding. The last few days he's been throwing up, and since he doesn't eat that much anyway, and doesn't seem to hold onto the weight when he does, that's really bad news. I've scheduled another vet visit for him on Monday to see what is going on. Much as I hate to look at other possibilities, Tigger may have more wrong with him than meets the eye, and his age is playing into the scenario a lot.
Tig also has some kind of arthritis, and can no longer get up on anything higher than an ottoman, which means he doesn't come in to sleep with me anymore. At this point, my biggest priority is addressing what's wrong, and keeping him comfortable. It's getting harder, and there are some other things that seem to be wrong, which make this hard to do.
Please keep Tigger in your thoughts and prayers. He's a good boy, and has had a hard life. I want the end of it to be as pleasant as possible for him. I also need your prayers for my finances, because I have some very large bills coming up, and have had some plumbing issues, so the tremendous cost of vet care is becoming more than I can deal with. I don't want to put him down until I have to, but I don't want to watch him suffer, either.
I'll let you know how things go with him next week.
