I went to a local park hoping to see the moon but I saw this spectacular thunderstorm instead which bypassed where I was luckily and headed east not long before sunset.

Thunderstorm, Wetlands, Northern Territory, Australia

Just as it was moving in, I was lucky to be near a golf course, took a detour, and reached this spot to capture the rolling clouds, moments before the downpour.

This image is almost out of the camera, just changed to jpeg and added little contrast... excited to get rain after such a long time...

Unusual strong thunderstorm with abundance of lightning moved through Cheyenne, Wyoming late in the day. In 10 years while living in southeast Wyoming, this was the latest thunderstorm that I experienced. It rained from a few hundredth of an inch (I had 022") to over half and inch.

This is a thunderstorm as it occurs every evening in Thailand at the moment. It'sr really intense sometimes, because the lightning strokes are so near sometimes you can hear them bashing so loud your ear hurt.

Anyway, it's beautiful to see this ! And fascinating to hear the the epic thunders after each lighting.

First thunderstorm in Poznań in 2018. That's the best storm season opening I ever photographed.

Nothing like a sudden summer thunderstorm to cool off a 98 degree day and start a sibling water fight. In the neighborhood, Orem, Utah.

A thunderstorm sends a bolt of lightning onto a mountain in Arizona.

Thunderstorm coming.

Northern Territory, Australia

This storm near the border of North- and South- Dakota was electrical rather active with many CG's (Cloud-Ground) discharges. Together with the structure of the storm it was awesome to watch....

Storm, Altenberge, Germany

Yesterday evening kept an eye on the breathtaking natural spectacle at the sky above. A bold thunderstorm fulminated the firmament. Unfortunately my camera wasn't fast enough, to catch the flash...

Storms passing close by.

Kyburz Flat: 6,322 ft. above sea level in the Sierra Nevada Range. On this day copious thunderstorms were firing off over the peaks. Deafening thunder claps, big water drops, and billous gray clouds created a lonely brooding atmosphere--the kind one can only experience in the high country.

Kyburz meadow was once a major high mountain grazing area for the Wheeler Sheep Company in Reno. Manned almost entirely by Basque shepherds, one can still see the old brick ovens that the shepherds used for baking their food. In between thunder claps I swore I could hear the sound of the ewes crying to their lambs, as the herders called out to their dogs . But that was another life--now long ago and far away. Sometimes I feel haunted by things past.

Thunderstorm moving across northern Illinois July 21, 2011. Near the town of Gilberts in northern Kane County.

Middle Ural, Russia, Aug 2020 / Черноисточинский пруд, Свердловская обл., август 2020

It is hard to believe that a quarter of a century has passed since the Union Pacific gobbled up the Chicago and Northwestern in the April 24, 1995 merger. Shown here on 09-09-1983 is CNW SD40 878 and it's train rolling south on the ex Rock Island mainline a few miles outside of Kensett, Iowa after passing through a distant thunderstorm.

Thunderstorms over Smeeton Westerby

On March 31, 2023 we had our first wicked thunderstorm of the year. At first it was just gray and gloomy outside with a bit of rain coming down, also it was getting windy. The first set of my photo images I was able to take outside as the weather was not severe yet. The sky was looking gray and ominous! I took these in my backyard and to the left of my house as you step out the backdoor. See for yourself as I go through the night! Reflecting the sun's glow as it sets

Nature, flexing her muscles. We rarely see big thunderstorms like this in norway, i guess this one formed due to the unusually warm weather we´ve been having lately. The pouring rain and thunderclaps woke me up, so i grabbed my gear, and ran to a lookoutpoint near my home. Glad i did, these are my first lightningshots, and they turned out quite alright no?

Check exif for shoot details. This one is more blue because of the shorter exposure time, only 7 seconds, so less of the ambient light gets registered.

Strobist info : At least one thousand million volts ( no really ) of electrical discharge, traveling at 220,000 km/h, with a temperature approaching 30,000 °C. Camera front, set to 1/4 ;) I suspect quite a few fish was having a really bad day at work.

thunderstorm arrives to Innsbruck

I was out last night trying to capture another smokey sunset due to the smoke that is currently in the air from the forest fires in British Columbia. Unfortunately there was a lot of cloud which obscured my view west. Fortunately, I did not have to wait long before I noticed a few lightning strikes in the distance. After checking the radar, I realized there were a few cumulonimbus clouds rolling in moving east. I waited about 1/2 hour and it was on top of me and it suddenly became quite angry. Bolt after bolt striking in my vicinity. I was already in the car by this point due to the rain. I knew I had to situate myself out of the rain and safely away from the lightning, so I drove a little farther north out of the system. A stunning show it was.

At 1PM, this 6 mile-wide thunderstorm (6 miles away) registered two dozen lightning discharges as another cell was developing at extreme right. The NWS is calling for a day similar to yesterday where storms would be slow movers (after 4PM).
