This is Tiranë, as seen from atop Dajti mountain. As we drove from Tiranë, to get to Dajti, we were hit by an intense thunderstorm with heavy rain and enough lightning to make Tesla smile in his grave. Truly intense! As we arrived at the foothills of the mountains, we left the thunderstorm in the valley and drove completely out of it when we were high up on Dajti mountain. The view of the storm over Tiranë was beautiful. The valley and the city were in complete shadow of the storm clouds, yet the setting sun was casting rays over the mountains between Tiranë and Durres, defining their peaks quite sharply. The sun hit three bodies of water, the artificial lake of Tiranë (smallest of the 3), Farka Lake (somewhat of a horseshoe), and finally the Adriatic Sea, which is the intense hotspot in the center of the picture. 4 days after this picture was taken, the area was hit by a 6.4 earthquake. It's epicenter was near the extreme right edge of this photo. At last count, over 50 people lost their lives.

Thunderstorm, Darwin, Northern Territory, Australia

MKG2004-06-27_003 Our vacation arrival greeting. Coastal thunderstorms on the horizon, but the sky does not seem to know which direction to take

It was my intention to capture in one photo all the things that fascinate me so much about night photography in the mountains: the glacier of the Dachstein, covered in snow at all times of the year, the magnificent starry sky and the turbulent changes in the weather. The photo shows the beginning of a strong thunderstorm in late summer.

When you want to see the Perseid Meteor Shower, you travel anywhere in the field, by the huge lake or on a pretty high hill, but you end up seeing the thunderstorm instead. It's not a bad thing, don't get me wrong, it's that I wanted to see more stars than the disrupting light from the lightning.

This isolated thunderstorm was one of several that missed my neighborhood all day and night. Too bad because I really could have used some rain for my plants and trees.

Na,na,na,na,na,na,... Thunder...

This time of the year with our humidity there is a chance of these thunderstorms on a daily basis. This one was flashing for nearly an hour.

This thunderstorm developed an hour after a severe thunderstorm moved through. It formed very rapidly and was very photogenic.
