Big power for a coal train: Because it was expected the two big UP GE locomotives wouldn't be sufficient power to haul their loaded coal train up Byron Hill, the crew picked up a Wisconsin Central GP-7 that had been set out at the north end of the Duplainville siding. This may have been the last time the venerable geep was used in revenue service.

… to a time when….

Before pressurized radiators, manometers were used on top of the radiators for temperature monitoring.

They did take on a life of their own;-)

I found this image in some old photos and I remember when I took this photo, it was bitterly cold evening and my last photography class. The view of Winnipeg was beautiful.

I couldn't wait for Thursday, so I 'jumped the gun.' Still working out the kinks with my recently reformatted pc. I hate this process, but every time I go through this (every 5 to 10 years, it seems) I learn about things my computer can do to make things easier....or way more annoying!

This week we are going back seventeen years to 2008, and to RV 621 on Frederick Street North with a service on route 40C from Finglas.

Route 40C started running between the city centre and Finglas in 1973. Its terminus was in Finglas South on Ratoath Road, and it may have been the first bus route in Dublin to use the C suffix. The route ceased to operate in 1995 when route 40 went over to CitySwift, but had returned by 2000, this time running between the city centre and Finglas Place. In 2003 it was extended north to St. Margaret's Road. The route ceased to operate in 2009, when it and route 40B were replaced by new route 240. This was part of the network rationalisation to reduce costs. However, teh route number unofficially lived on and was used on short workings on route 40 which terminated in city centre and did not complete the full journey.

RV 621 was new to Dublin Bus in 1999. It was withdrawn towards the end of 2012, and subsequently disposed of.

They've been played, scratched, broken, collected but most of all, loved. Vinyl records opened our ears to great music and remain the format of choice for audiophiles. So let's celebrate them.

The theme for this week's Flickr #TBT is #Records. Share your best loved photos on our Facebook post, and we will show our faves next week in the Flickr Blog.

Amtrak ACS-64 no. 662 (Siemens, 2012-2016) with train 161(21) passes over Astoria-Ditmars Blvd subway station on a sunny February afternoon. This scene is reminiscent of what could have been seen decades ago, with R46 cars built by Pullman-Standard from 1975-1978, Amfleet cars built in 1975, and AEM-7 locomotives built in 1978 wearing Phase III paint that debuted in 1976! The details are, of course, slightly different, with the ACS-64 locomotive, the Train Sim 2 ad, and the details of the station, which has recently undergone renovation.

We're not getting any snow here in Auburn today like most of the state is, but how about a snow day throwback to a day we did get some accumulation? Gold Ridge has a bit more than a dusting on the ground on the first day of March back in 2009 as local A41 wastes no time hustling west towards Birmingham. One of the former demonstrator GP59s leads a pair of GP60s and a GP50 with a great consist that A41 and its eastbound counterpart A48 were known for back in better times on the Central of Georgia.

Sure miss having Provia 400X as a high-speed slide film for dreary days like this, as it sure came in handy with them blasting by at the 50mph timetable speed.

Now there's a consist you don't see too often on CSX anymore, as a Mac and a SD50 hustle M202 north by the Macon siding. Could be fooled into thinking this was the CSX of 2010 for a moment with the vintage lash-up.

A quick test with the new environment called 'Lagoon'

played it before on 'TM TURBO' and somehow on TMUF too.. they kinda combined Canyon,Island and Bay to create this.

More to come.

This week we are going back twenty-nine years to 1997 and to KD 12 parked on Abbey Street, dressed for route 42B.

CIE started operating route 42B between the city centre and Harmonstown in 1958. Around 1982 the 42B was extended to terminate on Blunden Drive. The route ceased to operate in 2011 when it was replaced by route 27A under Network Direct.

KD 12 was new to CIE in 1981. By 1999 it had been withdrawn by Dublin Bus.

The bus is seen parked on Lower Abbey Street. This was the street the 42B operated from, but the replacement route 27A currently goes from Eden Quay. The bus stop seen here is currently served by routes 33, 33E, 41, 41B and 41C.

A hot July afternoon in 1997 finds a CR SD60 and SD40 duo leading a westbound mixed freight through Chesterton, Indiana, on what is now the Norfolk Southern Chicago Line. At this point, Conrail had less than two years to live, as earlier that spring NS and CSX had reached an agreement to acquire the Big Blue railroad that had been formed two decades earlier.
