Along the Alpine Lakes Loop in Great Basin National Park with a view looking to the south-southeast at ridges and peaks leading up to Wheeler Peak. My thought on composing this image was to line up the nearby forest to create more of a layered look going up the mountainside. Most of the image would be filled with the mountainside itself but there would be a little bit of blue skies to fill out the rest of the image and be that color contrast to the earth-tones below.

"Landgoed Staverden" , Staverden The Netherlands

History

In 1298, the Roman king Rudolph von Habsburg granted city rights to the existing Staverden court. The idea of the then count of Gelre (Reinald I) was to establish a thriving city in this place. After building a castle, a canal system and outbuildings, Reinald abandoned this idea and the city became an estate, while preserving city rights. The "hof" Staverden was then issued by the Geldersche dukes in loan.

Staverden and her residents

In the seven centuries that followed, the rich history of Staverden and its inhabitants was formed.

Landgoed Staverden

The estate has a total area of 718 ha and extends over a length of almost 7 km, from the Stakenberg in the North to almost the Uddelermeer in the South. It consists of approximately 340 hectares of forest, 310 hectares of agricultural land and 70 hectares of nature reserves, roads and buildings. Without exaggeration we may say that the great variety of deciduous and coniferous woodland, hedgerows, streams and flowery fields is one of the most beautiful nature reserves in our country.

Between all the greenery in Staverden are 18 characteristic farmhouses, the white castle, the villa and another 30 other houses and buildings. Several of these buildings have been designated as State or Municipal monument. In 2000 they are provided with a shield with a flaming peacock.

The smallest city

Staverden was officially declared the smallest city in the Benelux in 2012. It is possible that Staverden with its 52 inhabitants is even the smallest city in the world!

Granville, Tennessee was first settled in 1830 by Joseph Williamson and family. It was incorporated in 1837 and officially named Granville. From about 1831 until 1920, Granville was a thriving riverboat town. After riverboat travel ceased, the community was a successful farming area. Today the town is surrounded by Cordell Hull Lake on three sides. When the Cordell Hull Dam was constructed in the early 1970s, much of the town's farmland was destroyed due to the resulting lake, causing the town to become a "ghost town."

This historical marker is located on the main street through Granville (Clover Street) near T.B. Sutton's General Store and the Granville Museum. It reads:

"Settled in 1799, the settlers originally called this area Beech Hill. Incorporated in 1837, the name was changed to Granville. It became a booming riverboat town that included five general stores, a bank, post office, gristmill, blacksmith shop, icehouse, funeral home, service station, hotel, barber and beauty shops, doctor offices, and riverboat warehouses. During World War II, Granville served as a “maneuvers” training site for the United States Army. Up to the 1970s agriculture was also a focus of the town."

Granville (aka Tennessee's Mayberry Town) is home to two National Register of Historic Places sites. Carverdale Farms was added to the National Register on July 31, 2018 and the T.B. Sutton General Store listed on May 7, 2019.

CHRISTOPHER JOBSON

Cape Town-based artist Daniel Popper has become well-known for his towering sculptures of human figures adorned with or penetrated by thick canopies of foliage. His latest piece titled Thrive stands nearly 30 feet tall and is constructed from 14 tons of glass fiber reinforced concrete. The piece was recently unveiled at Society Las Olas, a residential complex in Fort Lauderdale, and will function as a permanent public art installation on the ground floor. Popper’s work is often more temporary with limited installations at global music festivals like Electric Forest here in the US or Boom Festival in Portugal, where sometimes his pieces take center stage. You can follow more of his work on Instagram.

This plants in the lake have been thriving in the last few years, due to increasing water levels in the lake.

Bells twinpod, Physaria bellii, thrives on Niobrara and Pierre shale outcrops between Fort Collins and the Ken-Caryl Ranch Natural Area in Denver, a distance of about 60 miles. On a map, the geographic distribution is approximately 20 tiny dots at the base of the Front Range, the edge of the Great Plains. This species thrives on soils so toxic that it has virtually no competitors. On the other hand, it does not seem able to spread to normal soils. In an evolutionary sense, this species is in a precarious position--if the shales disappear, the plant would be extinct.

Each April I visit this population to marvel and to take a photo of these healthy flowers in their toxic habitat.

I tell ya, if you're a gardener and you don't know it already, the flower to grow during the autumn months is the Dahlia. They are such a vibrant, gorgeous flower...and they thrive and flourish in the cooler weather! Dahlias just pop!

ooops! My husband just corrected me! Dahlias are actually a summer flower. They do well in cooler weather, but they won't do well at all if it gets down to freezing. They're a hardy flower, but not that hardy! lol

At any rate, I hope you enjoy!

Osprey of the Jersey Shore | 2019

The 2018 Osprey Project in New Jersey:

www.conservewildlifenj.org/downloads/cwnj_853.pdf

Ospreys continue to thrive in New Jersey. Nest surveys conducted by volunteers during the peak of the nestling period (late June-early July) resulted in documenting the outcome of 87% of 589 surveyed nests. We credit the successful work by our dedicated volunteers and faithful “Osprey Watchers” to report on nests all along the coast and major rivers. The goal of this project is to monitor and manage the state population of breeding ospreys to ensure they remain stable in New Jersey. We hope that the work conducted as a part of this project will help protect the species while closely monitoring for any indication of emerging threats.

The Osprey (Pandion haliaetus), sometimes known as the Sea Hawk, Fish Eagle or Fish Hawk, is a diurnal, fish-eating bird of prey. It is a large Raptor, reaching more than 24 inches in length and a 71 inches wingspan. It is brown on the upper parts and predominantly greyish on the head and under parts, with a black eye patch and wings. In 1994, the osprey was declared the provincial bird of Nova Scotia, Canada.

Hallandale Beach (formerly known simply as Hallandale) is a city in southern Broward County, Florida. The city is named after Luther Halland, the son of a Swedish worker for Henry Flagler's Florida East Coast Railroad. As of the 2010 census, the population was 37,113.

The city is known as the home of Gulfstream Park (horse racing and casino) and Mardi Gras Casino, a greyhound racing track which hosts the World Classic. It also has a sizable financial district, with offices for a number of banks and brokerage houses, plus many restaurants. Due to the large number of tourists who eventually retire in the city, Hallandale Beach has one of the fastest-growing populations in Broward County and in Metro Miami.

Hallandale Beach, like most of Broward County, had no permanent European-descended population until the end of the 19th century. Seminole Indians, in settlements that lay inland of the Atlantic shore, hunted in the area and gathered coontie roots to produce arrowroot starch. The northern edge of Hallandale Beach (along Pembroke Road) still features noticeable hammocks, points elevated above sea level in the distant past.

Railroad magnate Henry Flagler, owner of the Florida East Coast Railway, recruited Luther Halland, a brother-in-law of Flagler's agents, to found a settlement south of the community of Dania. Halland and Swedish immigrant Olaf Zetterlund touted the frost-free climate and cheap land of the settlement (then named Halland, later changed to Hallandale). Halland constructed a small trading post and became the first postmaster of the small community.

By 1900, the community had slowly grown to a dozen families—seven of Swedish, three of English, and two of African descent. In 1904 the first school was built, and the first church followed two years later. Hallandale was primarily a farming community; the beach was undeveloped and used by the residents only for recreational purposes.

Hallandale was incorporated on 11 May 1927, the eighth municipality in Broward County. By that time, a thriving community of 1,500 residents, with electricity and street lights, was in place. In 1947, Hallandale was reincorporated as the City of Hallandale, allowing it to expand its borders through annexation of nearby unincorporated land lying adjacent to the Atlantic shore. On August 27, 1999, the city officially changed its name to Hallandale Beach.

Hurricane Katrina first made landfall between Hallandale Beach and Aventura, Florida.

Hurricane Irma was originally expected to go right through Hallandale Beach, instead making landfall in Key West, and once again in Naples.

This is my 3rd sighting of her over 2 years. She is still hanging out in the same spot and thriving. She is not native to Texas, probably a released or escaped pet. I managed to get one close shot before she plopped into the water.
