Playing around with a seldom-used Yongnuo 50mm f1.8 - a fairly inexpensive prime lens that has proved better than I anticipated. I think the original single image was shot at ISO 800, so it's a tad noisy after squeezing the juice out of the RAW file

Focal Point Challenge "Mechanical Thread"

Thread, FABRIC, Tempe, Arizona.

I sure am glad this guy was not aggressive as I Almost put my hand down on him! I was painting the deck and going around the bottom of the spindles. I had my hand on the railing, sort of steadying myself. When I straightened up.... there he was just inches from my hand! He posed really nicely for me though so I didn't squash him. :)

The Red Thread

In Swedish, the expression ”den röda tråden”, which means ”the red thread”, is used much like the English expression ”the common thread” - it describes a recurring theme or characteristic, or sometimes a guiding principle. The same expression is used in German: ”der rote Faden”. Maybe it exists in other languages too.

When I began thinking about this week’s Self Portrait Sunday theme, ”the red thread” came to mind. Over the last years, following the red thread has sort of become my theme song. I try to focus as much as I can on things that are really important to me personally, which to a great extent means working on developing my talents. I get better and better on prioritizing this over caring about what others might think, and over conventional notions and ideas on what constitutes a socially acceptable lifestyle. In short, I am trying my best to follow my red thread, even on days that it might seem hopelessly tangled. I detangle it bit by bit, and it makes my heart sing.

I just love these old wooden spools.

Having snapped "Pexford Pic" at Gauxholme, it seemed rude not to wait the extra half-hour and snap the freight behind it, the 8.59am Redcar Bulk Terminal - Fiddlers Ferry PS (6M17), especially seeing as it was a relatively rare coal movement. In this instance GBRf Shed 66701 is doing the honours.

Given the lack of time, I simply opted to drop down Pexford Road (which can be seen on the left of the image) and head up the footpath on the other side to the more traditional overlook.

In the foreground is the Rochdale Canal, which has the dubious honour of being the second highest canal in England at exactly 600' (183m) elevation on the stretch between West Summit and Longlees. That section lies a couple of miles behind me where the canal passes over the shoulder of the hill through which the railway burrows via the more well-known (to railfans at least) Summit Tunnel. With around 19 locks between the summit and Todmorden, visible in the distance, anyone navigating this stretch can be sure of a decent workout.

Arms raised, reaching for the sky, half alive and broken. Brittle bones and tattered dreams, a picture tells of words unspoken. Bright lights and dark caves, my mind and soul are lost, lost sometimes, sometimes...

I get asked why I don’t write more, and to be honest, sometimes I just can’t make sense of my words or feelings. I’ve been in such a rut but lately I’ve been feeling better after realizing that part of the reason I’ve been so down could be laziness. I’ve been lazy, I’ve been gaining weight, and in turn my creativity has suffered, I’ve been lazy in my process, and processing. That all ended today, in hopes of being proactive and breaking free of what has been like heavy chains on my soul. Sometimes I just want to feel normal, like “tomorrow I’ll be better”.

A few months ago while out with a client we were treated to one of the most amazing, and strange displays of light, and clouds I’ve ever seen, with temps over 100°, and random lightning (no thunder) striking often and randomly. I was lucky to capture a frame with lightning while the sun was peaking through.

ODC "one of these things is not like the others"

We were at a fabric store when I noticed this display of thread. I just can't resist patterns, particularly when there is some form of variation which only accentuates the repetition. Here, it's the colors and the missing spools which really sells the rank and file configuration.

"Take Something Ordinary"

The day started off quite nicely but by the time I got around to thinking about a shot for today, it was foul, so looked for an indoor shot. I threaded six different coloured cottons through the needle and twisted them up a bit. Taken in upstairs window where there was a little more light, trees in the background, gold reflector to the front.
