I recently bought a Nikon Z7 and took this handheld shot from about 50m from this falcon. What a great camera and lens.

The Sigma FP-L is one quirky little camera. I spent time with a preproduction model and appreciated the great image quality (61MP!) in a tiny package, but there are a number of other quirks that make this a camera distinctly not designed for the mainstream. I loved this image, though, particularly after I spent a litte time in Luminar AI tweaking the sky. You can find both my coverage of the Sigma FP-L and Luminar AI below.

An extremely apt name for this plant - which replicates itself by developing tiny new plants along the edge of each leaf.

I don't often share photos from my event work, but it is something that I do a lot of. I loved this shot of a great bassist who does double (and triple) duty with dubs, overlays, and directing the band. He's a very talented musician, and this shot pictures him large and in charge as he faces the crowd. Time to bring that bass!

Architect: Zaha Hadid

I'm a bit of an architecture nerd so finding an Hadid building in Miami was thrilling for me. It's still not open yet despite the websites claim. More photos to come.

Dame Zaha Mohammad Hadid DBE RA (Arabic: زها حديد‎ Zahā Ḥadīd; 31 October 1950 – 31 March 2016) was an Iraqi-British architect.

Hadid was the first woman to receive the Pritzker Architecture Prize, in 2004. She received the UK's most prestigious architectural award, the Stirling Prize, in 2010 and 2011. In 2012, she was made a Dame by Elizabeth II for services to architecture, and in 2015 she became the first and only woman to be awarded the Royal Gold Medal from the Royal Institute of British Architects.

She was described by The Guardian of London as the "Queen of the curve", who "liberated architectural geometry, giving it a whole new expressive identity". Her major works include the aquatic centre for the London 2012 Olympics, Michigan State University's Broad Art Museum in the US, the MAXXI Museum in Rome, the Guangzhou Opera House in China, and the Beijing Daxing International Airport, also in China. Some of her awards have been presented posthumously, including the statuette for the 2017 Brit Awards. Several of her buildings were still under construction at the time of her death, including the Daxing airport and the Al Wakrah Stadium in Qatar, a venue for the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

One Thousand Museum is a high-rise residential condominium under construction in Miami, Florida, United States. The deep foundation required drilling to record depths of over 170 feet (52 m) by HJ Foundation. The 62-story building is expected to rise over 709 feet (216 m) when completed in 2018, making it one of the tallest buildings in Miami. The depths of two auger-cast piles broke a record for Miami-Dade County that had recently been set by HJ Foundation at the Porsche Design Tower in Sunny Isles Beach. The building, which is located at 1000 Biscayne Boulevard, across from Museum Park, was designed by Pritzker Prize-winning architect Zaha Hadid. After the death of Hadid, the Project Director of Zaha Hadid Architects, Chris Lepine, completed the project. The exotic design of the building features a curving exoskeleton partially obscuring the balconies that also serves structural purposes, allowing the interior space to have fewer columns. To meet the architect's designs of smoothness and finish, the columns were finished with glass fiber reinforced concrete permanent form works. The effect of the design and height on wind loading is part of the reason the foundation had to be exceptionally deep. The building is considered ultra-luxury, containing about 83 large units priced at about double the cost per square foot of nearby condominium towers, with amenities possibly including a rooftop helipad.

High surf from Nuu on the south east coast of Maui. Normally I would try to capture this shot from the wet zone but the surf was just too big and gnarly. Instead, I set the tripod up in the safe zone at the top of the thirty foot cliff.

Last light from the sunset and an 80% moon helped to light up the scene. A stiff breeze and swirling ocean spray made it very challenging to keep the lens clean. The sound of rocks pounding into each other made the scene even more powerful.

The wet smooth basketball sized rocks were shimmering in the moonlight but I didn't realize it until I saw this on my computer. Each black wet rock was reflecting the moonlight and it looked like a thousand moons glistening on the shore.

Have a nice night!

A thousand-year-old tradition dating back to the Heian period, this Shinto ritual seeks to pacify the spirit of Sugawara no Michizane by delivering the message of his exoneration. The climax arrives when the doors of Houfu Tenmangu Shrine swing open, unleashing a torrent of white-clad men, the "hadakabō," who storm the hall. The spectacle of the massive, 500-kilogram oajirokoshi palanquin careening down the steps is nothing short of breathtaking. This is one of western Japan's most exhilarating and chaotic festivals.

The look here is pretty clear, "Hey Dad, what about me?" I got this look as I was shooting from a low space where Bella, our Cavalier Spaniel, couldn't get to. she had plowed through the snow till this point, but was desperately frustrated that she could get no closer. She just looked too cute there buried in the snow, and I though you would enjoy this shot. I used the new Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS II USM lens for this shot, and my review of that lens has gone live today. You can read it here: bit.ly/can70300 | or watch it here: bit.ly/70300YT. I think Canon has done a solid job in delivering a nice upgrade to the V1 of the lens.

We just returned from a backpacking trip to Thousand Island Lake in the Ansel Adams Wilderness. Some might call it Thousand Person Lake and to those people I say – true dat. I came up with a keeper for each of the different phases of light from night to post sunrise. I thought it might be cool to share them in order. Be ready for a lot of reflection shots. Sorry, but it was way too cool to ignore.

Getting this started with a Milky Way shot over Banner Peak. I totally lucked into this situation. I didn't really prepare for this trip. Didn't know the angle the sun/moon would be at. Didn't know the sun/moon rise/set times. Didn't know the Milky Way would be in that position. Didn't even know exactly where the wildfires were. Even so, after a lackluster sunset I was shooting some throw away shots as it was getting darker and I noticed the Milky Way appear faintly over Banner Peak in one of my shots. I didn't really bring the lenses I would normally use to shoot stars and I've never had a lot of luck with star shots, but I figured I'd give it a go. It reminds me of the Hansel (Zoolander) quote, “I care desperately about what I do. Do I know what product I'm selling? No. Do I know what I'm doing today? No. But I'm here and I'm gonna give it my best shot.” Good things happen when you be there. So f/it.

It was forecast to be a cloudless sunrise so I took a drive out to Wheeler National Wildlife Refuge to photograph the sandhill cranes this morning. Oddly, all the birds remained distant. I visited both the bird blinds but even with the 500mm I couldn’t get anything but “crowd” shots.

Oh well. It’s a wonderful experience, even if I didn’t get the pictures I wanted. There are thousands upon thousands of sandhill cranes there in the winter. (Check the dates before visiting.) There are so many, you almost don’t notice the place is teeming with other wildlife.

As usual, the best pictures come with the best light. This is at the fishing dock, across the highway — on the north side — from the Visitor’s Center. The Sun was just hitting the trees and giving the water the brown glow, but it hadn’t made it to the birds yet. You know me, I’m all about the color.

Do not stand my grave and cry, I am not there, I did not die.

This is the rich chocolate cake decorated with chocolate cream cheese icing and hundreds and thousands that I baked for Scout for his fourth birthday.

The cake recipe, written down as a "Pantry Chocolate Cake" because all the ingredients are readily found in most pantries as staples, is a very old one, given to my Great-Grandmother by her cook before she left service and retired in the 1960s. The recipes were probably written down by her when she entered service in the 1920s, and she no doubt learned them from the cook whom she was apprenticed to. My Great-Grandmother's cook gave my Great-Grandmother, who had never cooked a meal in her life, a hand written cookbook of her "never-fail recipes". Whilst my Great-Grandmother employed another cook and never cooked a meal throughout the remainder of her very long life, she did cherish the cookbook, which was passed to my Grandmother, who rarely cooked herself. She in turn passed the cookbook to me, and I do enjoy cooking many of the delightful recipes from it. These include "Pantry Chocolate Cake", "Afternoon Tea Orange and Poppyseed Cake" and "Thick Breakfast Orange Curd".

This beautiful nursery tea set is made by the Shell China company in the 1920s. It features six cups, saucers and plates as well as a teapot, milk jug and sugar bowl, all gilt and featuring different nursery rhymes including: "The Queen of Hearts", "Sing a Song of Sixpence", "Ride a Cock-Horse to Banbury Cross", "Goosey-Goosey Gander", "There Was a Little Man who had a Little Gun", "Jack and Jill" and "To Market to Market to Buy a Fat Pig". The set was a gift to me from a close friend. There are also doll (bear) sized tea spoons which are sterling silver salt spoons, and the sugar tongs in the sugar bowl is Eighteenth Century sterling silver.
