The strange light quality in this due to the thousands of lights and signs in the Times Square night.

Samyang's "Tiny Series" has been a favorite for me, as they are compact, light, inexpensive, and yet optically excellent. The AF 24mm F1.8 may be the best of the bunch yet, and is more feature rich and better performing than previous lenses. It handled the 50MP of my new Alpha 1 just fine, and was a great companion for capturing this leaning fence on the edge of a freshly plowed field basking in the golden hour sun. Here's the linkage to my coverage of this excellent little prime:

Another few thousand tons of Mendip limestone make their way past Hungerford Common towards London behind a decidedly scruffy looking 59206 John F Yeoman (formerly Pride of Ferrybridge)

The train is 7A09, the regular up, morning Jumbo 07:17 Merehead - Acton, from where, once split, portions of the train will proceed to various destinations across London for unloading

I was glad to see a DB 59/2 in charge as these locos are likely to disappear from the Mendip stone trains with the takeover by Freighliner imminent

Never given the same TLC as their Mendip Rail brethren, these Class 59s may also be sold by DB Cargo to another operator (GBRf ?). They have recently been to Toton for assessment in advance of a possible sale

~ how many words do 1000 pictures say?

this is the milestone that I have reached with this little picture.

thanks so much for all the support, kind words and encouragement that you all have sent my way over the last 1000 uploads.

and a special thank you to the kewpies for making it extra special with their wonderful sign.

they worked on it all morning and created a huge mess, but you know after all it is the thought that counts.

Thousands of Canada Geese and Snow Geese in the air today. Only a few Greater White-fronted Geese.

New York State World War II Memorial

A thousand-year-old tradition dating back to the Heian period, this Shinto ritual seeks to pacify the spirit of Sugawara no Michizane by delivering the message of his exoneration. The climax arrives when the doors of Houfu Tenmangu Shrine swing open, unleashing a torrent of white-clad men, the "hadakabō," who storm the hall. The spectacle of the massive, 500-kilogram oajirokoshi palanquin careening down the steps is nothing short of breathtaking. This is one of western Japan's most exhilarating and chaotic festivals.

Thousands of these magnificent birds use the Aylmer Wildlife Management Area to refuel on their migration to the high Arctic Region between Alaska and Baffin Island.

Each year between March until early April, it's expected that 10-60 thousand birds will stopover here. Birdwatchers from all over the province come to Aylmer to see this beautiful bird, and wonder of nature that is right here in our backyard!

I've been asked by a number of people to share more of my Arizona photos, so I've got a new article and photo gallery called "Picturing Arizona". It highlights the unique beauty of the Southwest along with a few tips for making the most of shooting there. You can read it here: bit.ly/picAZDLA The silhouettes of the saguaro cactus (only found in the Sonoran Desert) are one of the great gifts to photographers. There are few things in nature that silhouette as well. Nothing quite like being out on the desert and watching the sun rise!

There are thousands of objects you'd expect to find in a hardware store, far too many to list here. The list of known and unknown things that are not associated with hardware stores is infinitely longer.

One such thing is seen here. It's a cross-section of what must have been a historic, specimen sized tree.

In other settings this object would have been converted into a calendar on which different rings represent key dates in history: the Fall of Constantinople, the Diet of Worms, the Treaty of Westphalia, the Articles of Confederation, the first daily Peanuts comic strip, and so on.

Unlike a date on a calendar, which is a two-dimensional ink image, each ring in this piece of wood is an actual contemporary of the events that took place when the ring was formed. The same sun and moon shone over them both.

Here, the visible part of the slice is mute. If there is an explanatory label and a ring chronology it must be hidden behind merchandise.

I'm not entirely sure what was keeping Fyero so intently focused when I shot this the other day, but something certainly had her attention, and it was not me.

That's okay though, I think this came out quite nicely and she looks adorable being so fixated on whatever it was.

Hope everyone has had a good day.

Long exposure turns a grey day into beauty. I stacked an ND8 filter and a Hoya Circular Polarizer to soften the effect of the water along the shoreline of the Ottawa River. I'm more excited about this shot than any I have taken in a while.

The observer of the soul cannot penetrate into the soul, but there doubtless is a margin where he comes into contact with it. Recognition of this contact is the fact that even the soul does not know of itself. Hence it must remain unknown. That would be sad only if there were anything apart from the soul, but there is nothing else.

Fushimi Inari Shrine is famous for it's thousands of vermilion torii gates. Located in Kyoto, Japan

Mother of thousands is a type of kalanchoe, according to the internet. This one lives at the Lyman Estate greenhouse, which has a large collection of succulents.

Thousands like her throng the ' happening venues' and as the day progresses, share an anxiety on their being. A solemn and poignant moment from the festival grounds

The reflection turned out nice. The buildings remind me of something the old East India Company may have used to load and unload goods in the olden days.

I have been rediscovering my love affair with a tiny old lens that has no electronics, no auto-focus, and where you become familiar with what an aperture really is as you open and close it manually. The lens: an SMC Takumar 55mm f/1.8. Unlike many old lenses, it actually has almost no quirks. It has good flare resistance, is very sharp, has good contrast, and, most of all, produces really beautiful color.

I was riding my bike out on a country road when I saw this little patch of wildflowers in the moss. I quickly came to stop and headed over with my camera. This was one of the four frames I took. I love the ability of a wide aperture lens to create an intimate little world where something tiny like this blossom can step onto a grand stage of beauty. If you ever decide to start trying out old M42 lenses, this is a great place to start!

And here is one of the main reasons why people get this Rokinon lens - nightscapes. It has very little coma (particularly compared to many wide angle lenses), which means that all of those star points stay nice and round. It can also capture so much of the sky in one frame. I fought with some clouds that loved to gobble up the light on this particular night, but the end effect is kind of cool.

I shot this as a part of an album cover shoot that is being done in March. This narrow depth of field shot highlights the musician's hands on the mandolin. I shot this with the Makro Planar 50mm f/2 that I just reviewed and used an EG-S focus screen in 6D to help aid critical focus here.

The city of Tiberius enjoys an ancient history and one fantastic location. It sits along the Sea of Galilee (Lake Kinneret) and was established in 20 BC. It was named in honor of the Roman Emperor, Tiberius. Despite originally being a city that the religious Jews shunned, it is now considered one of the four holy cities of Judaism because of the work of religious scholars there after being driven out fro Jerusalem by the Romans. I will share both a night and a morning view of this beautiful city. This is the view by night from Nof Ginosar.

March is a little conflicted. We've had 40 C temperature swings, from extreme cold to freezing rain to snow to sunny and mild days. I walked carefully out onto icy ground to take this photo in the midst of a foggy patch as weather systems moved through. I've got a number of new Tamron products in for review this month, including the beautiful new 70-200mm f/2.8 VC G2 lens. I used it for this shot, wide open. Help guide my review process by taking a look at the "Tamron Haul" video and adding your voice: bit.ly/TamronHaul | You can also see more photos from the 70-200 G2 here: bit.ly/70200G2IG
