Thousands join to honor Our Lady of Guadalupe

Story and photos by Andrew Junker | March 15, 2010 | The Catholic Sun

An unusual sight met passersby in downtown Phoenix Dec. 4.

A seemingly endless line of men, women and children snaked through the city’s streets. They wore colorful clothing; some had masks on or loud metal tappers attached to their shoes.

They danced and sang and honored Our Lady of Guadalupe, whose feast day they were celebrating. All told, more than 4,000 people from 80 different groups joined in the procession that ended at an altar set up in the street facing St. Mary’s Basilica.

Bishops Thomas J. Olmsted and Eduardo A. Nevares stood before the altar and blessed all those who walked and danced by. It took more than an hour for the procession to end.

“There were some powerful symbols evident,” said Armando Ruiz of this year’s Honor Your Mother event, which culminated with a Mass where Bishop Nevares gave the homily.

Ruiz — who helps plan the celebration — saw a coming together of the whole diocese at the event. St. Mark, a predominantly Hispanic parish, and St. Theresa, which is predominantly Anglo, sponsored this year’s Honor Your Mother, which in itself is a symbol of the power of Our Lady, Ruiz said.

“The whole idea that you had Hispanic and non-Hispanic parishes coming together to celebrate the Virgin of Guadalupe as a patroness of the diocese,” he said, “she’s that hope of bringing diverse groups together as she did when she first came 500 years ago.”

Bishop Olmsted said something similar as Mass began.

“We are all children of God today, grateful for the way Mary inspires us to bring the great news of her Son to everyone we meet,” he said.

Ruiz was also pleased with how many people participated in the procession — the event’s largest yet — and by the traditions and practices those marchers celebrated.

“Most of the dances and the costumes were indigenous and Bishop Nevares, when he spoke, talked about that,” Ruiz said. “They remained true to those long-time traditions, and as they’ve come to this country, they shouldn’t abandon those traditions of faith for what can sometimes be materialistic or non-faith promises of this society.”

Bishop Nevares delivered his homily in both Spanish and English. He began with a brief explanation of the image of Our Lady of Guadalupe.

“The image of Our Lady of Guadalupe is so powerful because we see Mary, the conqueror of all the Aztec pagan gods. She is the bridge between the Aztec culture and the Catholic faith.”

Likewise, the bishop encouraged the congregation to turn to Mary and leave behind all the distractions that modern society offer: cell phones, the Internet, iPods.

“There are so many distractions that take us away from our life of prayer. We need to get back to praying in our family, to praying individually, to praying the rosary,” Bishop Nevares said.

It’s from this devoted prayer life that men and women can find their vocations, he added, and asked the congregation where they thought priests come from.

“Do they fall down from the sky?” he pointed above his head. “No. They come from your families.”

As Christ told the Apostle John from the cross that Mary was his mother and that John was her son, so too should Catholics live out that familial relationship, the bishop said.

“As the disciple took Mary into his care, each of us is invited to take Mary into our home and into our heart. Let us accept her and love her as our heavenly mother.”

Ruiz said that the homily — like the entire Honor Your Mother celebration — helps prepare local Catholics for a new evangelization.

Hundreds of thousands of women die from pregnancy- and childbirth-related complications every year and research suggests, in developing countries, there is a link between maternal health and lack of access to quality water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH). Improving maternal health requires a greater understanding of WASH as it relates to maternal mortality and morbidity; monitoring to ensure effectiveness; and systematic evaluations of completed WASH projects. Further research and collaboration by the WASH and maternal health communities could garner more awareness and advocacy.

A Gold 45 Goddess exalts the archetypal form of Athena--the Greek Goddess of wisdom, warfare, strategy, heroic endeavour, handicrafts and reason. A Gold 45 Goddess embodies 45SURF's motto "Virtus, Honoris, et Actio Pro Veritas, Amor, et Bellus, (Strength, Honor, and Action for Truth, Love, and Beauty," and she stands ready to inspire and guide you along your epic, heroic journey into art and mythology. It is Athena who descends to call Telemachus to Adventure in the first book of Homer's Odyssey--to man up, find news of his true father Odysseus, and rid his home of the false suitors, and too, it is Athena who descends in the first book of Homer's Iliad, to calm the Rage of Achilles who is about to draw his sword so as to slay his commander who just seized Achilles' prize, thusly robbing Achilles of his Honor--the higher prize Achilles fought for. And now Athena descends once again, assuming the form of a Gold 45 Goddess, to inspire you along your epic journey of heroic endeavour. Just like Helen of Troy, she's worth fighting a ten year war for! :)

Chichén Itzá -

One of the world's foremost archeological sites, the enormous Chichén Itzá is mind-boggling in a million ways.

It was a city built to intimidate, influence, inspire, and empower- and as such, is not at all unlike the cities we know and live in today. Who knows who it benefited or how each individual related to it, but there is a great deal of civic pride here. The practices carried out here are so alien to what most of us know today, but we can still understand what it is like to exist in a certain time and place, and to define where we are as home, for all better or worse.

It's thinking about the day-to-day that is most poignant. Countless people walked these streets, entered these buildings, each with their own hopes, dreams, and intrigues. Each trying to make sense of the world around them within the society they were brought up in. Each with pleasures, vices, gripes, and shortcomings. Some with imagination that could vault the stars. Some who devoted themselves wholly to the city and society around them, and others who dissented, perhaps quietly, living entire lives under the radar. But all around, surely there were many mornings in which these people may have just simply walked out of their homes and casually gazed at the huge pyramid and surrounding grandeur and just marvelled that humans could be capable of such things.

And what other people shrank back in horror- disgusted by the brutality of humanity?

and how many countless others were simply mortally terrified at the spiritual bloodshed?

We have no real way of knowing whether or not our most cherished modern monuments will someday be ruins themselves, drawing from strangers a similar sense of wonder and mystery, a thousand or two thousand years hence.

The name Chichén Itzá means "at the the well of the Itzá", a reference to the Cenote Sagrado (a huge sinkhole) which provided the water to make this city flourish in the riverless Yucatán.

The city was regionally significant as far back as AD600, during the Classic Period of Mayan history. At that time, however, this was something of a far-off backwater outpost, while the major Classic Period city-states further south, such as Tikal and Palenque, enjoyed being at the very heart of civilization.

The oldest visible remaining architecture here represents the Puuc ("hill" in Mayan) style and was probably built around 900AD. Sometime soon after that time, Chichén Itzá underwent a huge upheaval. This was the end of the Classic Period, when the great civilization of the south was collapsing (for reasons unknown, but probably tied, at least in some way, to overexploitation of the environment).

Chichén Itzá at this chaotic time came under great Toltec influence- the Toltecs had their capital at Tula, in the west, near Mexico City, and were the precursors to the Aztecs. Whether the Toltec influence was via direct invasion or via the Itzá Mayans is still debated. Either way, the city became deeply connected to the ideology of Central Mexico- an ideology which was strongly convinced that the perpetuation of earthly life was only guaranteed by sacrifice to the gods- a bloody, bellicose tradition that is exemplified throughout the newer portions of the city. The very same spectacular architecture that captivates visitors today seems, in some ways, to be desperate expression of a culture in decline....

In short, the older portions of the city demonstrate a deep connection to its Classic Mayan predecessors, via the Puuc tradition; and the newer portions (ca. AD 1000) demonstrate a fractured, and more desperately extreme time, highly swayed by outside forces. I have read that anywhere from 35,000 to 90,000 people lived here at its peak- no matter the figure, a huge number for ancient times.

Turmoil continued into the 1200's, after which point the city finally declined totally, being absorbed by the Spanish in the second half of the 1500's.

August 4, 2010

If you really want to truly appreciate this astounding place, find a way to come early in the morning- i.e. stay in a local town. We arrived at around 9am and had the place to ourselves- in the midday, just as the sun is becoming unbearable, (which is amazingly taxing on the brain, as we dizzily found out) hoards upon hoards of day-trippers arrive on buses, and what is so tranquil in the morning becomes a cattle run. We thankfully managed to stay a few steps ahead of the crowds. Definitely bring a ton of water, and be prepared to bake like you've never baked before in the extreme sun

The Bezeklik Thousand Buddha Caves are complex of Buddhist cave grottos dating from the 5th to the 9th centuries between the cities of Turpan and Shanshan (Loulan) at the north-east of the Taklamakan Desert near the ancient ruins of Gaochang in the Mutou Valley, a gorge in the Flaming Mountains, China.

They are high on the cliffs of the west Mutou Valley under the Flaming Mountains.

There are 77 rock-cut caves at the site. Most have rectangular spaces with rounded arch ceilings often divided into four sections, each with a mural of Buddha. The effect is of entire ceiling covers with hundreds of Buddha murals. Some ceilings are painted with a large Buddha surrounded by other figures, including Indians, Persians and Europeans. The quality of the murals vary with some being artistically naive while others are masterpieces of religious art.

heart Tells Me you are the soul I Need

To Get me Through my Life and Heal my Scars

Nothing Takes the Place of My Love for You
