A full-sized reclining fibreglass elehant on the brink of death, covered with thousands of stick-on bindis, by Bharti Kher at the Queensland Art Gallery.
A bindi is traditionally applied to the Hindu forehead to symbolise the third eye. Bharti uses bindis to transform objects and surfaces allowing the viewer to look at them anew.
I have been lizard-watching for half a century but until a few days ago I had failed to appreciate that the 'third eye' of a lizard really is a third eye. I had assumed the parietal 'eye' was a patch of light/IR sensitive cells. But if you go large towards the back of this sand lizard's head (taken with a telezoom so as not to disturb it) you can clearly see a central dark pupil behind which is a lens as well as a lighter yellow area, very much like the lizard's main pair of eyes. This implies that it may be able to see a blurred image of a predator, as well as to help with basking.

The Third eye, the dot which appears on the forehead between the eyebrows, signifies to the devotee to inculcate ethical behavior, indulge in meditation, be generous, make offerings and free oneself from materialistic provocations. The third eye symbolizes spiritual awakening of knowledge and wisdom besides providing divine vision with the ability to see past our mundane universe of sufferings. it also symbolizes that He was a great beings.

A ceramic hand with a prominant symbol of the third eye (6th chakra) on the palm. The hand is 9-inches tall.
Strobist/technical info:
The scene is a 3-image focus stack composite and was illuminated by two Nikon SB900 and one SB700 speedlights. The SB900's were placed 45° CR/CL, one-foot above and three-feet away from the subject and fired through Neewer 24" x 24" soft boxes. The CR flash was fired in Manual mode @ 1⁄4 power; the CL flash was fired in Manual mode @ 1⁄8 power.
The SB700 was placed behind and to the left of the subject, slightly above and three-feet away. It was fired in Manual mode @ 1⁄16 power through a gridded snoot with a Rogue "Medium Blue Green" gel attached.
The SB900's were triggered by three PocketWizard PlusX triggers; the SB700 was placed in SU-4 mode and triggered by the other flashes.
Lens: AF - S DX VR Zoom - Nikkor 18 - 200mm f / 3.5 - 5.6G IF - ED[II].

Photographed under a warming light in the Pūkaha Mt Bruce National Wildlife Centre, near Masterton in New Zealand. While closely resembling a lizard, this reptile is the lone member of the genus Rhynchocephalia. Its Māori name means "peaks on the back". It has another remarkable feature - a third eye on top of its head! This parietal eye appears to be a light sensor, but could also have other perception abilities.
