This battle-scarred Blue-belly Lizard aka Western Fence Lizard (Sceloporus occidentalis) posed for me this morning under the native Wild Blackberry (Rubus ursinus) in the Rosaceae plant family. (San Marcos Pass, 5 May 2012)

Mentally draw a line between its eyes, and draw another line from the front of its face and along its back... behind where they cross, you can see the mysterious "third eye" of this lizard!

If you do a Google search on "western fence lizard third eye" you'll get lots of hits. It's so interesting that Descartes picked the pineal gland (our third eye, somewhat buried) as the seat of the soul.

Valley Forge National Historical Park is the site of the third winter encampment of the Continental Army during the American Revolutionary War, taking place from December 19, 1777 to June 19, 1778. The National Park Service preserves the site and interprets the history of the Valley Forge encampment. Originally Valley Forge State Park, it became a national historical park in 1976. The park contains historical buildings, recreated encampment structures, memorials, museums, and recreation facilities.

The park encompasses 3,500 acres (1,400 ha) and is visited by over 1.2 million people each year. Visitors can see restored historic structures, reconstructed structures such as the iconic log huts, and monuments erected by the states from which the Continental soldiers came. Visitor facilities include a visitor center and museum featuring original artifacts, providing a concise introduction to the American Revolution and the Valley Forge encampment. Ranger programs, tours (walking and trolley), and activities are available seasonally. The park also provides 26 miles (42 km) of hiking and biking trails, which are connected to a robust regional trails system. Wildlife watching, fishing, and boating on the nearby Schuylkill River also are popular.

From December 19, 1777 to June 19, 1778, the main body of the Continental Army (approximately 12,000 troops) was encamped at Valley Forge. The site was chosen because it was between the seat of the Second Continental Congress in York, supply depots in Reading, and British forces in Philadelphia 18 miles (29 km) away, which fell after the Battle of Brandywine, in which many American soldiers were injured, including the Marquis de Lafayette This was a time of great suffering for the army, but it was also a time of retraining and rejuvenation. The shared hardship of the officers and soldiers of the army, combined with Baron Friedrich von Steuben's professional military training program, are considered key to the subsequent success of the Continental Army and marks a turning point in the Revolutionary War.

Buckle your seat belt folks...

Third time lucky. An iconic location I was back again for my third attempt to capture an image that satisfied me. The location a 20 minutes drive from my sons house in Chapel where we where staying on grandchild minding duties. This was our first morning and looking at the week ahead the best chance of getting some sort of atmosphere. I’d calculated if I got up a 4am 90 minutes later I should be at the top of Chrome hill, at 5:31am I took my first photo from the top. I’d picked right we had mist, they’d be no chance of this repeated in the week ahead as wind was forecast, if anything I had to much mist. I started from the top and made my way down picking of compositions as I travelled. With a composition chosen I would wait as the scene would change from minute to minute as the mist rolled through the valley, now you see it, now you don’t. Slowly I picked of my photographs and decided to climb the next hill, then disaster. Nearing the tree in this image I slipped on wet grass, I was careless, carrying my camera on the tripod I fell then rolled into some nettles, I yelp. My first thought was the camera OK, I’d fallen awkwardly to protect the camera, hence the roll into nettles, then I thought good it’s my left leg I can still drive the car. I tried to stand fearing I’d broken the ankle, slowly I put some weight on it and wiggled my toes and decided it was only a sprain. I hobbled through the gate by the tree only to see the sun make it’s first show some 45 minutes after sunrise. I took a quick photo then the photographer took over, I needed to get back up the hill for the composition I wanted, the photo you see now. All that was left to do now was a slow hobble 1.5 miles to the car.

Third Thursday at The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art

Travelling around the world makes me very happy. Every summer, my family and I go visit a new place. Travelling helps me become exposed to other cultures and even helps me learn new languages. I like trying foreign food and seeing other countries life styles. These souvenirs show some of the places in the world that I have been.
