For the third year, Recipe for Success partnered with Urban Harvest and the City of Houston to host the Third Annual Food Day Chef Throwdown at the City Hall Farmers Market in honor of Food Day, the national celebration and movement for healthy, affordable and sustainable food.
Four Houston chefs went head-to-head to create tasty vegetarian dishes using local produce donated by Gunderrman Acres and Atkinson Farms, plus this year's secret ingredient - HONEY (from Bee Wilde)! Food savvy judges voted on their winner - Greg Gordon of La Vista!
We also asked patrons why they eat seed-to-plate - take a look at their answers!

One of my favorites of the trip to Mt. Rainier! These were clumps of grass on the bank of Reflection Lake.
I cropped it and used selective coloring to add an artistic touch.
I wish I had a canoe, because I wanted to paddle out there to touch the grass.

This will be the third year Caryn and I have hosted our Be My Awesome Valentine Swap (which involves making valentines by hand) and I had a totally different idea for them but then at the last minute I changed my mind and got out some paint. I figured why not? I'd never made hand-painted cards before. I probably won't make hand-painted cards again, either. On one hand, I love projects that allow me to make giant messes (this fits the bill), but on the other hand, the hand-lettering with paint-coated toothpicks was a little more labor-intensive than I'd planned on. Anyway, after two painting sessions, I think I'm done. Yay!
There is one thing the photograph must contain, the humanity of the moment.
We are making photographs to understand what our lives mean to us.
The best thing about a picture is that it never changes, even when the people in it do.

Surprise, surprise - I've been sitting on a bunch of figures, including the BT-02 Windgirl from Bingo Toys.
Besides being a strikingly good looking Fembot, the BT-02 caught the attention of the third party collectors market (or at least the ones that like T&A) not so much because of what she looks like, but rather, because of the fact the former front runner, BigFirebird Toys, seemed to have cancelled their own plans for a Windblade homage, rumoured due to a desire to avoid the ever watching gaze of Hasbro.
I'd never heard of Bingo Toys before, but I was told their previous release, a Shockwave figure I believe, fell into the "good value" territory, so with expectations adjusted I ordered one.
It's an interesting release to say the very least. Finishing up the aesthetics discussion, descriptions say this is their take on the IDW (comics) version. I've not read the comics, but I do own the original Windblade figure when she was more Geisha assassin than Magical Girl, so yes, I can see where that description is coming from.
Furthermore, Windgirl definitely has this very strong "mecha" aesthetic, very sleek and futuristic, relying on strong angular lines for most of the body. While there are obvious fantasized female characteristics, lets be honest, we've all seen much, much worse. Hell, I own some of the them.
For whatever reason, Flickr deleted my entire blurb, so I'm going to summarize my thoughts as follows - this is the product that I wish Bigfirebird Toy made. Not just Windblade per se, but rather, a figure with better QC and Engineering decisions.
Accessory wise, she's got several pairs of hands, including two pairs with questionable posing use, four faceplates ranging from neutral to "I'm laughing at your penis size", and a stand that I can't figure out how to use. There is no manual, just a stop motion video... which also doesn't cover the stand.
The figure holds together quite well and features very similar articulation to Nicee, including the fact that her every pose is basically hampered by the backpack. Joints, overall, appear to be under better control here, though to be fair Mocha wasn't bad - everything before her, on the other hand, was terrible. There's also better posing options for her hands as there's an additional forearm joint. Wing joints are tad on the loose side, whereas body joints are all fine.
Engineering wise, it's not bad. Some props need to be given as at least they didn't take the easy way out and simply make this a frame that you pop panels back on for the transformation. However, you will likely need to readjust some parts upon completion of said transformation, as misaligned limbs will result in a warped jet mode.
I just wish I could understand why the hip joints pivot at the upper corners of the cavity rather than the traditional positions.
For the $118 CAD I paid, Windgirl is a very solid product. Is it as good as Eris? Definitely not, but it's also not that expensive. Windgirl is, however, a better first impression than several other third party figures have given me, and for that I think I'd be willing to see where they go from here.

Called “hard-grooving musicians” by The New York Times, Chicago-based Third Coast Percussion has been recognized for its “superb” (New Yorker) sound, unique take on percussion instrumentation, and integration of new media in performances. (So integrated, that they’ve offered free phone and tablet apps at their performances to enhance audience experience.) This evening, they’ll perform David Little’s “Haunt of Last Nightfall,” which blends pre-recorded heavy metal sounds with live percussion for a “tender, elegiac, dark, and epic” experience; and Tan Dun’s “Elegy: Snow in June,” written for percussion and cello to commemorate Beijing’s Tiananmen Square massacre. They’ll also perform other Third Coast Percussion favorites, including John Cage’s “Credo in Us.” For “Elegy,” the quartet will be joined by guest soloist Joshua Roman in what’s sure to be an unforgettably powerful night of music. The group — Sean Connors, Robert Dillon, Peter Martin, and David Skidmore — is Ensemble-in-Residence at University of Notre Dame’s DeBartolo Performing Arts Center, and is known for working closely with new composers and integrating community outreach and workshops on their tours.

Parked between workshops at the Rockhill Trolley Museum is this 1936 Brill-built subway car. The rapid transit car ran between Camden, NJ and Philadelphia on the Benjamin Franklin Bridge and later on the Broad Street subway. It was donated to the museum in 1986 and was modified to run with a trolley pole on the roof instead of drawing electricity from a third-rail.

Last week, I joined the Mill Valley City Council meeting in our MV community center, to ask them to endorse California’s Senate Bill 54, which aims to get state and local law enforcement out of the deportation business.
I came at the invitation of Peter Graumann, the Civil Rights/Immigration Lead for the Mill Valley Community Action Network (MVCAN), our grassroots political action group. Three of us spoke for a couple minutes each to invite the council to support SB-54 and protect immigrants in our city.
I told them that about 5% of MV residents are undocumented immigrants, who live in fear of being deported and separated from their families. I invited all SB-54 supporters to stand up, and about a dozen rose. I then asked the council: “Can the council do something to address our immigrant population’s fears? How would YOU like to live in fear?”
Mayor Jessica Sloan dodged the question the first time, then asked the police chief to answer the second time. When I asked for a direct response the third time, she said they have a committee looking into intolerance in our city, so my question was no longer timely and they would get back to us.
She said the committee was looking into removing Nazi swastikas from city walls, but she didn’t address our wish to protect immigrants from deportation at all. I found her answer disappointing and “corporate”. They seemed more concerned about fixing potholes and trimming dead trees than taking care of our most vulnerable citizens.
We will keep asking the city of Mill Valley to be more proactive on this issue, and hope that they will join Marin County supervisors and other cities in our county who are looking to take a stand on this issue.
