The statue of Abraham Lincoln statue has sat at atop Bascom Hill on the University of Wisconsin-Madison campus for more than a century. The statue is a replica of Adolph A. Weinman's original, erected in Hodgenville, Ky., where Lincoln was born. Lincoln is considered a patron of the university because he signed the Morrill Act in 1862 to provide federal aid to land-grant colleges such as UW-Madison.

Rubbing Abe’s extended foot is said to bring good luck. In another tradition, graduates celebrate by climbing atop his lap in cap and gown for a photograph.

My 200th photo on Flickr ;-)

My Flickr friend Akiko has been describing the Japanese celebration Hinamatsuri on March 3rd. This is 'girls day' on which people pray for the healthy growth of girls; I thought these 2 photographs were timely.

We do not know what she’s thinking.

Something about a love she once had

and lost, the mechanics of an ingrown

toenail. She has a pretty face, we know

that, which is to say he’d desire her

if he looked up. He has a strong back,

probably, maybe a woman at home

right now bending over a tub of laundry,

a remote control. Let’s not imagine

the worst. People have to live and they

have to be able to have a little fun. It’s

the great escape of the wolf in everyone

that makes the paycheck such a tolerable

instrument for measuring life’s inequities.

Her name is Ariel, his Francisco. He grew

up in a village where everyone had sisters

so he knows the mystery of woman is

insoluble. She was an only child, a spoiled

brat, but has become a good person,

disturbed by the world’s blindness

when it looks at some. She looks at many

and sees the goose, the lion and the dove

that rise each day from every human bed.

She sees the movement of shadow as it

transforms a clear head into a place

of violence. But she knows it’s love

that will save the world if it can be saved.

Now she is thinking about bread,

the joy of good teeth. He’s thinking

about beer, Mozart, the glorious

necessity of the absurd.

We can't solve problems by using the same kind of thinking we used when we created them.

Mittens wonders if there will be more fishy treats forthcoming if she stays still enough for me me to take some more photos. She's such a lovely girl -- insisting on kneading my tummy before dinner to aid my digestion ... or maybe not.

This one is from the ones i took with my canon yesterday night. The light lines has been created with a small lantern, the same that i've used to light the face. I've increased the contrast with lightroom

Thinking Time taken on a wet and cold day in Manchester. I liked the man in the window who looks like he is thinking. He is Framed in the window which is positioned in top first third of the scene.

After years of trying to shoot a wild turkey, I finally succeeded. I saw a flock feeding beside a country road and slowed down to avoid scaring them. I noticed that they all stopped what they were doing and looked at my vehicle as I came to a stop. Thankfully, they didn't leave the area. I started shooting through the window. When that didn't seem to bother them, I rolled down the window, and again they all stopped what they were doing. And to my amazement, some started to walk toward me, but then changed their minds and walked away. I fired off some shots. Encouraged by their apparent lack of fear, I cautiously stepped out of my vehicle so that I could shoot at eye level. As soon as I did so, the entire flock ran towards me and surrounded me. Obviously they were used to being fed by hand and were expecting a treat. Unfortunately, I had mounted my long lens on the camera, thinking I would be shooting them from a distance. With -20C temperatures and blowing snow, I didn't want to try to change lenses, but at least now I know where some cooperative subjects live.

Invest a few moments in thinking. It will pay good interest.
