In Between, Retrospective
Washington Heights
Manhattan, NYC
November 2022
Nikon 105 mm f/2.8
This late autumn cool in Cape Town has me thinking about its analogous northern hemisphere month, and the procession of fall into New York City that the first weeks of November herald, back that side. With the heat-island effect of the urban landscape, NYC’s trees are ‘last call’ for peak fall foliage in the state– and it really is something to behold. Even local parks, and street trees burn up in respective red, gold, orange . Meanwhile, waning light casts golden shadows, darts around the bricks of Northern Manhattan– sparkling to and fro like some kind of ritualistic dance as the place descends toward winter solstice.
I’ve seen some beautiful imported trees’ colors here…but as spectacular as the fynbos is (more plant species on Table Mountain than the entire British Isles), it doesn’t match the grandeur of the northern climes’ October and November days.
For all that this past northern fall was (exhilaration teaching genetics for the first time, photographic validation having my first shows come to fruition, a swan song in New York), I wasn’t able to get out for proper autumn shooting and enjoyment. So, in my favorite season, I sprang from school prep to a steady stream of move-out logistics setting up this next phase in southern Africa. And when moments presented themselves, I shot, like hell, but edited very few.
This set hearkens back to just such an interstitial moment: unknowing at the time I was coming down with covid for the third or fourth time, taking a break from writing student mid-semester comments, I walked over to the park which became a pandemic saving grace: J. Hood Wright. Even still, when I watch In the Heights, the movie, I’m weeping when they get to the scene featuring this lookout, and the GWB, presiding over so many histories– and now, in a very modest way, also my own.
I’m thinking through the area as a time lapse sequence: indigenous fishing and oyster collecting in the Muhheakunnuk (Hudson river in Lenape aka translated ‘the river that flows both ways– a more fitting name for the estuarine feature), grand estates prior to the expansion of “Manhattan” northward, the emergent hub of German Jewry: Frankfurt-on-the-Hudson, Italians and Irish giving way to Puerto Ricans, and Dominicans in Quisqueya Heights. And back to the personal scale: relationship arcs, teaching breaks, so many sunsets, meeting to-be friends just shooting the shit, pandemic agony, photo walks with my first real community in the city.
Having shot these quickly, I didn’t realize I would find this set so meaningful, so representative of this whirlwind time: in between things (maybe we’re always in between). I only edited these today. Miss you all, half-a-world away in the Cape of Good Hope.
This is a behind the scenes shot from me and Josteins phototour. We had a wonderful time and took a lot of neat pictures. I was extremely pleased with the outcome.
The pictures is captured with my Nikon D90 and still my 50mm 1/4 lens.

The major new public commission, entitled Thinking Head (2017), comprises clouds of steam slowly rising from the roof of Nottingham Contemporary.
On some days these clouds of vapour will be intense; on others, barely visible. Completely uncontrolled by the artist, the steam will move in shifting patterns – forming plumes, wisps, complex shapes.
The inspiration for Favaretto’s project is Alighiero e Boetti’s final sculpture, from 1993. Sometimes called My Brain is Smoking (1993), this bronze self-portrait is electrically heated; the artist is thinking so hard that his head is steaming. Favaretto has said she wanted to turn a museum into a ‘thinking machine’.
Ran out of models. :p Dug up old photos to practice some editing.
Single softbox from top right about 2 ft from the model at 3.2 stop.
Snoot highlighting the background.
I'm working on a card for this week's 'Thinking Inking' class over at 2peas and my crew wanted to play too. Here's a pic of my little 'Thinking Inkers' in action. :)

I am probably alone in thinking that the recent history of this engine is a bit of a disaster. Quite why anyone would run it in LNER green with double chimney and smoke deflectors defeats me. The NRM also seem to be making a fist of it. Imagine if the Louvre took the Mona Lisa and added a bit extra colour to make it more attractive to visitors, or someone fitted Jim Clark's 1960s Lotus racing car with a huge wing and wide tyres to make it run faster. I'd restore No 4472 to the condition seen here on June 22 1983 and have it as a static exhibit at the NRM, as surely everyone wants to see what is arguably the world's most famous engine. In happier days, she's seen here waiting to pick up a special at Hellifield.
