Day 334: The Little Things
Several conversations this week have got me thinking about how this past year, in narrowing our options and cancelling our lifelong busy-ness, has taught us all to notice and take pleasure in the little things. Things like the sound of Gershwin from a distant window, like children giggling in the street, like the perfect caper lemon sauce, like raindrops on a leaf. May we keep this quiet sense of wonder whenever it is we get to where we’re going next.
When I made the town calendar for its 200th anniversary in 2019, the idea was to juxtapose an old photo of a scene with a modern one.
I created the photo that you see in the comment section.
I liked and like it fine, but someone just had another idea -- that of fading one to the other in the same frame. So, I took the same two photos as did what you see here.
Those were photos that I had on hand, but this may become a project as the year unfolds, but it will need more careful matching of photos. One would have to take the actual old photo out onto the field and try to line up the new one. I had to do a lot of manipulation to get these two photos to fit together.
Not now though, for today begins a Stay at Home that will last for a month and maybe longer. We need to do this because the world is full of irresponsible nitwits.
Speaking of nitwits, I now see that I hadn't made the previous photo public until now although I uploaded it 2 years ago.

A CSX business train tippy-toes across the former Wabash at Ashburn.
The train was running on Canadian National's Elsdon Subdivision on an inspection trip from Indianapolis via the Monon and the CN's Grand Trunk to the Belt's Clearing Yard and then to Danville via Dolton and the C&EI.

Yep, me too!
1. I love music. My favorite artists/bands are Elvis Presley, The All-American Rejects and Mandy Moore. I also like The Beatles, Queen and Whitney Houston. I like almost all sorts of music, actually. But if I have to pick a favorite, it would be rock'n'roll.
2. Until a few years ago I was allergic to potatoes, beet sugar and everything that grows underground. Once, I wasn't invited to a birthday party, because the mother of the girl thought it would cost to much effort to buy something different for me. But I almost always brought my own food everywhere. My mom and my sister were allergic too, by the way. We're all glad we're not anymore.
3. I've always wanted to write a book. I have written down so many ideas and beginnings, but never finished any of it. I started again recently, I hope this will work! I love to write.
4. I cry at almost every beautiful/sad moment in movies. The Lake House, A Walk To Remember and Click are examples of movies I cried at. I also cry at beautiful music, like the soundtrack from Finding Neverland. Such beautiful piano music.
5. As you might know, I'm dutch. But I think in english almost all the time. I love to read english books.
6. I believe in The One.
7. I love notebooks, diaries, organizers, just all stationery in general. But I'm not a very organized person. I don't like planning, and if I do, I never stick to it. I'm always tempted to buy more notebooks, but I don't know what to use them for.
8. I'm kind of a shy person. Sometimes I hate that about myself. I wish I could change it.
9. I think Johnny Depp is one of the best actors EVER. And he's hot. Tom Hanks is also a great actor.
10. I love shopping, I love clothes, shoes, dvds, books. But I don't buy much. Even if I have the money for something, there's 50% chance I won't buy it anyway. Even if I really want it. I don't know why that is.
11. I absolutely dislike my profile. I've been trying to accept the way I look for so long, but it's just so hard. I hope I'll be able to realize it's really NOT that important how you look, and really believe it too when I say it.
12. I can't whistle. No matter how hard I try, I just can't.
13. I know I should, but I don't do that much for school. I always wait until the last day to do something, to finish a paper, to study for an exam. It's a bad habit, but so far I've always made it. I'm afraid I won't make it this year if I don't start to do more.

We had our first big snow of the season and it blanketed the landscape with a foot of beautiful snow!
I hope that all is well, I have been extremely busy and an preparing to go to Washington DC this weekend to see my image being used by the US Navy Band during their Holiday Concert at DAR Constitution Hall! I am super excited and of course will be bringing my camera!
I will be catching up with everyone before Christmas, in the meantime sending holiday blessings to each of you!

Despite having a large trove of lovely things to photograph, I often find myself delving into my box of vintage buttons. I hope it's not because they're easy - I don't have to think too much - although that's quite possibly true. OK, let's say it's because flowers are in short supply at this time of year, which means I have to find them where I can. That sounds better and it's also true. :)

More from my trip to Les Oakes Reclamation Yard in Cheadle. I though this would have made in interesting planter for the garden, but I just couldn't quite get to it.

A set up shot for Studio 26 assignment 'exploring the colour red'. I have just read the book; a strange tale, I think aimed mainly at young teenagers but I still enjoyed it.
Having said I had nothing red, I then thought of Clive's red pot and 'grumpy old man' mug, put together with my book.
This planet seems good. One species seem to be so populous they have infiltrated every continent. They do have some rudimentary language skills but their mathematic ability is so basic they would never be considered an intelligent species. Atmosphere is very similar to ours with minimal terra and bioforming needed making it cheap to colonize.
The fingers quickly tapped the device sending a communication to corporate headquarters that they could apply to the commission to colonize earth with a high degree of probability of being approved.
Within a decade the ships started arriving. Humans objected to being colonized and threw every nuclear weapon they could scrap up. The colonizers retreated back to orbit, baffled by a species intelligent enough to create a bomb that could destroy the atmosphere and stupid enough to deploy it. The colonizers requested equipment to cleanse the atmosphere which was an extra expense. By the time they received approval and the equipment, all life forms on earth were dead except for cockroaches.
The colony shipped in fauna and flora from their original planet. It was much better really. Normally it was very difficult to get permission to make a planet exactly like home. There were groups that fought for planetary diversity but really it wasn't the colonizers' fault the original species killed themselves and almost everything else.
No one was happy about the cockroaches tho. Not even the groups for planetary diversity as cockroaches spread quickly across the galaxies once a few managed to get aboard ships. Major funding was approved to eradicate them. Nothing worked. The cockroaches kept surviving and coming back. Very irritating.

Note: I added texture and the aqua lighting on the right through Photoshop. For the texture, I used NightCafe to create an image with two planets on one layer and then used the SoftLight filter in PS at 40% opacity. The aqua lighting I brushed two circles of aqua, then Guassian Filter to spread them out, then Vivid Light filters at differing opacity for each circle.
