Preface to Orienta/ism .
The terrible conflicts that herd people under falsely unifying rubrics like ''An1erica",.
"The West" or "lslan1" n1ust be opposed, writes Edward Said.
-~ -· ~ .
Nine years ago I \Vrotc an afterword for Orientalistn which. in trying to clarify what 1believed I had and had not said, stressed not only the many discussions that had openedup since n1y book appeared in 1978. but the ways in which a work about representationsof "the Orient" lent itself to increasing n1isinterpretation. That T find n1yself feelingn1ore ironic than irritated about that very san1c thing today is a sign of how much agehas crept up on n1e. The recent death of n1y two main intellectual, political and persona l1nentors, Eqbal Ahn1nd and Ibrahin1 Abu Lughod, has brought sadness and loss, as wellas resignation and a certain stubbon1 wi 11 to go on. .
In n1y n1ernoir Out of Place (1999) I described the strange and contradictory worlds inwhich I gre\v up, providing for n1yself and n1y readers a detailed account ofthe settingsthat I think fon11cd me in Palestine, Egypt and Lebanon. But that was a very personalaccount that stopped short of all the years of n1y own political engagen1ent that startedafter the 1967 Arab-Israeli \var. .
Orientalism is very tnuch a book tied to the tumultuous dynamics of contemporary.
history. Its first page opens with a 1975 description of the Lebanese Civil War that.
ended in 1990, but the Yiolence and the ugly shedding of human blood continues up to.
this minute. We have had the failure of the Oslo peace process, the outbreak of the .
.
second Intifada, and the awful suffering of the Palestinians in the reinvaded \Vest Bankand Gaza. The suicide bombing phenomenon has appeared with all its hideous dan1age,none n1ore lurid and apocalyptic of course than the events of 11 September, 2001 andtheir aftem1ath in the wars against Afghanistan and Iraq. As I write these lines theillegal imperial occupation of Iraq by Britain and the United States proceeds. Itsaftennath is truly awful to contemplate. This is all part ofwhat is supposed to be a clashofcivilisations, unending, implacable, irremediable. Nevertheless, I think not. .
I wish I could say that general understanding of the Middle East, the Arabs and Islam inthe United States has in1proved so1newhat, but alas, it really hasn't. For all kinds ofreasons the situation in Europe seems to be considerably better. In the US the hardeningof attitudes, the tightening of the grip of demeaning generalisation and triumphalistcliche, the dominance orcrude power allied with sin1plistic conten1pt for dissenters and.
''others" has found a fitting correlative in the looting and destruction or Iraq's libraries.
and n1useums. What our leaders and their intellectua] lackeys seen1 incapable of.
understanding is that history cannot be swept cJean like a blackboard, clean so that "we".
might inscribe our own future there and itnposc ou r own fonns of life for these lesser .
.
people to follow. It is quite common to bear high officials in \Vashington and else\vhere.
speak of changing the n1ap of the Middle East, as if ancient societies and n1yriad.
peoples can be shaken up like so many peanuts in a jar. But this has often happened.
with the "Orient", that sen1i-mythical construct which since Napoleon's invasion ofEgypt in the late 18th century has been rnade and re-made countless tin1es. In theprocess the uncountable sedin1ents of history, that include innurnerable histories and adizzying variety of peoples, languages, experiences, and cultures, all these are S\Yeptaside or ignored, relegated to the sand heap along with the treasures ground intomeaningless fragments that were taken out ofBaghdad. .
My argun1ent is that history is made by n1en and won1en, just as it can also be unn1ade .
