I realized today that I was an adult. It really, truely dawned on me. I stared at my sink full of dishes and the ephiphany that they will not get done on their own started to sink in. While it's awesome being a grown up because I don't have to do things if I don't want to, no one will do them if I don't. Don't worry, I haven't been living in a dreamworld the last 7 and a half years, it's just more of an awakening for me lately. It's nice when I can rebel and not do things, but the obvious truth associated with that is that there are concequences. I'm a horrible procrastinator and I'm hoping that I get better with that each day. Dishes just seem to suck worse than the rest of my chores.

The picture, of course, didn't turn out as I'd hoped. I want to take a photoshop class because thre is so much potential here. Oh well. =)

Puna Pau, the pukao factory.

Puna Pau is a small extinct volcano, located about 7 kilometers northeast of Hanga Roa, whose name refers to a source or well of water that must have existed in its surroundings. This crater is part of a set of parasitic cones that emerged during the eruptions of Ma’unga Terevaka, the youngest and tallest volcano on Easter Island.

Inside the Puna Pau crater there is a red slag quarry that formerly constituted an important source of raw material for the islanders. Red slag or hani hani, as it is known in the Rapanui language, is a type of volcanic ash of great porosity and low hardness, which shows a reddish color due to the iron oxide present in its composition.

The characteristics of this soft and easy-to-carve material, which made it unusable for use in construction, were used to manufacture various types of objects, some very special. Among them are about twenty small statues, water containers, called taheta, ornamental-type blocks, and moai eyes.

Although there are other deposits of red slag on the island, the Puna Pau quarry was the most important of all, and is believed to be the origin of most of the known objects carved in Hani Hani. This relevance may possibly be due to the strong reddish color of its material, since in the Rapanui culture the color red is a symbolic color associated with sacred rites and mana or spiritual force.

Just as the southern slope of the Rano Raraku volcano was the origin of most of the island's statues, it is thought that a third of the Puna Pau crater was used for the manufacture of all the pukao. It is also believed that different work teams were formed in the quarry that competed to have their own production areas.

However, unlike Rano Raraku, it seems that Puna Pau was considered a secret and sacred place. Its hidden location from other parts of the island, an almost silent production, being carried out inside the crater, and an especially valued red color contributed to its isolation and mysticism.

There is no turning back

from this unending path of mine

Serpentine and black it stands before my eyes

To hell and back it will lead me once more

It's all i have as i stumble in and out of grace

I walk through the gardens of dying

light

And cross all the rivers deep and dark as the night

Searching for a reason why time would´ve passed us by

With every step i take the less i know myself

& Every vow i break on my way towards your heart

Countless times i've prayed for

forgiveness

But gods just laugh at my face

And this path remains

Leading me into solitude's arms

I see through the darkness my way back home

The journey seems endless but i'll carry on

The shadows will rise and they will fall

And our night drowns in dawn

Amidst all tears there's a smile

That all angels greet with an envious song

One look into stranger's

eyes and i know where i belong

And the path goes on...

Bryn Oh Blog : The path

The Path is an immersive project based around the exquisite corpse concept sometimes used by the Surrealists. Essentially, each chosen artist adds to a composition in sequence. Eight artists were invited to stand upon one of eight different coloured boxes I had set up. Once all had chosen a box to stand on, a chart was rezzed which listed the order of colours which would hten dictate the sequence of artists to compose the scenes for a narrative.

So if red was the first colour on the chart, then the artist standing on the red cube would begin the narrative. If blue were next then the artist on the blue cube would continue the story after red had passed their part on to them.

The artist who goes first composes a short start to a story. They then pass on this segment to the artist who is next on the list. That artist would then write up a continuation of the narrative and pass it on to the third artist. This would continue until reaching the eighth and final artist.

This was the random order of artists:

1-Bryn Oh

2-Colin Fizgig

3-Marcus Inkpen

4-Desdemona Enfield / Douglas Story

5-Maya Paris

6-Claudia222 Jewell

7-Scottius Polke

8-Rose Borchovski

I would like to thank all the artists involved for working so hard on this project and in such a professional manner.

They created a truly brilliant experience for me and hopefully for all the guests as well.

An excerpt: "No matter what happens, no matter how far you come from God, you still feel that you are with God. The divine pull is always pulling you back to God. God is really softly spoken and romantic. Whenever I see a religious person who has no romance in the way he talks to his wife and children, I instantly recognise that such a person can never love God. God is full of romance."

High above the valley floor, a small herd of sheep follows a narrow path along the ridge.

The mountains rise behind them – massive, ancient, unmoved.

The scene is simple, but the contrast in scale, pace, and presence tells a quiet story of endurance and grace.

Watching the world shift from one to the next, like an obsessive compulsive with a remote control, Prahlada continued with our conversation….

He was wide eyed and focused,

“When it is seen, everything is seen; (motioning with a sweeping hand gesture) When it is heard, everything is heard; when it is touched, everything is touched (banging his hand on the wooden table) – for the world is because IT is. It is awake even when one sleeps, it goads the unwise into wakefulness.“

He stopped for a second, then motioned for me to stand up with him, as we were heading back into the world.

“Whatever comes, let it come; whatever goes, let it go. For so long we have been enslaved by the dreaded enemy known as ignorance who robbed us of our wealth and wisdom, it is by self inquiry that we are free. Now, let’s go.”

Another one of my infrared neighborhood pictures.

It looks like regular B&W. So why did I take the infrared picture?

I cannot answer the question clearly.

20 seconds exposure with ISO 800.

I have some other infrared pictures. Please give me some comments. Thanks.

There is a lot of fish on fish violence in this mural, but, the principal guy is all smiles. Doesn't he know that Buster's is best known at Toronto St Lawrence Market for their fish dishes. This guy is about to be filleted, beheaded, befinned, breaded and deep fried. Good example of Faux Fish Art. Artist unknown.

btw - Buster's opening a new food counter at King and Yonge, somewhere in the lost world of THE PATH. Just follow your nose.

The path not taken. On both sides of these trees were empty fields stretching off into the distance with no end in sight. I wonder where it might have taken me if I had ventured down that path.

Spending quite a bit of time visiting my father in the hospital this month so my camera hasn't seen much action yet in 2012 but we've planned to travel to Cuba for a week of sunshine and warmth later in the year so I need to get out with the camera soon to "practice" before that trip .
