Me, Myself, and EYES - Preschool/Kindergarten by Kt Yankowski

As apart of the "Sense Quest" theme, students discussed what it would be like to not be able to see, and how that would effect their every day life, and ways that would change the way in which they perceive the world. We wondered, what would it be like to draw without the use of one's eyes? Students were challenged to keep their eyes off of their papers by using markers attached to small plates, which blocked their view of the table and workspace. We encouraged students to keep their eyes affixed firmly on the provided mirrors, so as to create "blind" contour portraits of themselves. We also went over the abstract work of Picasso to assure them that the so-called "silly" appearance of their sightless drawing was just another way to express oneself creatively. The students created one blind portrait, one seeing portrait, and then water-colored the pieces as they saw fit.
