TRACTOR - "THEY WAIT"
Quietly they wait….
Bright, metal machines painted colors Blue & Yellow
Morning arrives, for the one to climb inside to settle in for a full day of work ahead
Keeping you company is the full roar of a Tiger
And at day’s end to be parked in the yard as the job is done
Night arrives and again….the huge wheels and engines of the “Tractors” are still and silent

New Holland started with a corn mill in Pennsylvania built in 1895. The company expanded into farm implements and found success with automatic hay balers. The firm was acquired by Ford in 1985, and the Ford-New Holland name began to appear on tractors. In 1990, Ford sold a majority interest in its farm machinery operations to FIAT, with the agreement that the Ford name be dropped in ten years. Many tractors began to be released under two names, New Holland in traditional Ford markets, and FIAT in their traditional markets. In 1999, CaseIH and FIAT/New Holland merged to form CNH Global, which continues to built tractors under the New Holland brand.

Komatsu was founded in 1917, building mining tools for its parent company before being separated in 1921. In 1931, Komatsu built the first crawler tractor in Japan. Through a joint venture (KIMCO), Komatsu built tractors for International Harvester in the 1970s and early 1980s. Today, Komatsu is the second-largest construction equipment manufacturer in the world.

The first Tigers built at the foundry were improved by a stronger drive-train, hand-clutch and a steering wheel instead of a tiller-type steering. The first tractor built had a strap iron clutch actuator. They felt a better piece could be made if these were cast out of aluminum. Several were cast but were found to be brittle so they returned to the manufacture of steel parts for the remainder of the production. These tractors were 5hp Briggs and Stratton powered and were called "PTD 5" for Piedmont Tractor Division, 5hp.
It is unfortunate that this little garden tractor, once named, "America's Finest Small Tractor", had a life span of only seventeen years. It is the author's opinion, that, had there been better management, this garden tractor could have developed into one of the major brands commonly used in America today.

HOME - "So Longed For"
"The house is old, the trees are bare,
Moonless above bends twilight's dome;
But what on earth is half so dear—
So longed for—as the hearth of home?"
(Excerpt from) 'A Little While, A Little While' By Emily Brontë
Walking through the dense woods, the leaves a thick, wet carpet of colours gold, umber and orange, I barely noticed a towering structure rising high on the side of the hill, well hidden by tall pines and spruces, stately oaks, poplars and birch trees.
I began my ascent, slipping noisily on the shiny wet leaves and sinking into the soggy ground beneath me. I held on to any available branch lest I slide back down. Occasionally I paused to take in the view around me; the sun streaming through the bare branches, alighting on the glistening leaves, a gaudy shag rug from the 1970 era. I continued to climb toward this mysterious tower, my camera banging heavily against my chest as I inevitably slid down on my knees.
As I neared the mammoth construction, I realized I could not approach it the way I was heading for there was too much underbrush and I had to change directions by going across, climbing over and between fallen trees, then steeply up and once there I realized it would be a dangerous climb down. Determined, I continued. Descending gingerly, baby steps….
Grabbing for that branch fast but discovering too late that it was a spiny, sticky pine. It saved me but my hand was scraped and gummy.
I was facing the amazing monstrosity now and was awed by the workmanship of this immense touch-the-sky fireplace, the only thing standing on the side of the hill. The masonry was a work of art and still intact. Stones of various rich earth tones and just below, there lay the fallen roof with tiles of galvanized metal still rusty-nailed to old rotting wooden planks. A tree had formed around what looked like was another part of the tiled roof, standing upright.
What had destroyed this mansion, for surely it must have been a house of considerable size to have had a fireplace of this magnitude? How long had this been standing here? Long enough for the trees to grow up tall, for the forest to grow thick around it, to close in upon the hearth. As I stood small in front of the massive monument, in what must have been the family room, I wondered about the family that had gathered here for the warmth. How they must have laughed as they waited for dinner, pot bubbling over the fire. Had they sung songs here, read books, played games?
I looked at the wonder and glory surrounding me and decided this must have been a happy home here in this beautiful forest. I felt a connectedness, could hear the echoes of my own small family as we gather 'round the dining room table to share our stories and love one another in my cheerful house, our home where our daughters were born and we have become a family.

The theme for the Show & Tell session of the November 15 Meeting of the BCD (Jigsaw society) was Christmas.
Here we have two small jigsaws showing the same image 'The Wonderful Jewels' a scene from the story of Aladdin. Unfortunately I do not know the name of the illustrator. The three larger images are of a Zig Zag 200pc jigsaw, measuring c8x12in. It looks to be strip cut in interlocking style and contains a few simple whimsies but no line-cutting. The small images show a budget version I own, cut in a standard sort of grid cut. It fits flat in its box which has a large image on the front.
I have found two further versions of jigsaws cut to this image.
The early push-fit version wrapped in film was brought to the meeting by its owner. The other is a Victory Gold Box Super Cut of 200pc, measuring 13x9in. It has a wavy edge, some line-cutting and a few simple whimsies.
Aladdin is now more familiar as a Christmas pantomime and Disney movie than as a story. Aladdin, a Middle Eastern folk tale, is one of the best known tales in The Book of One Thousand and One Nights ("The Arabian Nights"), although it was actually added to the collection in the 18th century by Frenchman Antoine Galland.
In the UK the story of Aladdin was dramatised in 1788 by John O'Keefe for the Theatre Royal, Covent Garden. It has been a popular subject for pantomime for over 200 years, and includes the well-known pantomime dame character Widow Twankey (Aladdin's mother). Pantomime versions often change the setting/story from China to the Middle East and introduce elements of other Arabian Nights tales (in particular Ali Baba). One version of the "pantomime Aladdin" is Sandy Wilson's musical Aladdin, from 1979.
The earliest surviving animated feature film is the 1926 film The Adventures of Prince Achmed, which combined the story of Aladdin with that of the prince. Aladdin and His Wonderful Lamp is a 1939 Popeye the Sailor cartoon where Popeye plays Aladdin. Aladdin (1958 film) was a television musical by Cole Porter and Aladdin and His Wonderful Lamp, a 1964 album by Cliff Richard.
Since the early 1990s Aladdin pantomimes have tended to be influenced by the 1992 Disney animation; for instance the 2007/8 production at the Birmingham Hippodrome starring John Barrowman, featured a variety of songs from the Disney movies Aladdin and Mulan.
