The Glyptotheque (German Glyptothek) is a collection of antique sculptures. The designation glyptotheque was coined by the librarian of King Ludwig I of Bavaria, derived from the ancient Greek words γλυπτός glyptós (sth. cut or engraved) and θήκη thḗkē (storage place).

The Munich Glyptotheque was commisioned by King Ludwig I of Bavaria and built from 1816 to 1830 in neoclassical style.

The pub Clachan in London, where mum and I ended up back in 2008 after a visit to Liberty where we had bought Christmas ornaments. That was a fun trip - and my first trip to London which gave me quite the taste for the place!

Found One (an Image that is) while I was mucking around in the Archives today... Still too hot for me to venture out :-)

Ospreys are very large, distinctively shaped hawks. Despite their size, their bodies are slender, with long, narrow wings and long legs. Ospreys fly with a marked kink in their wings, making an M-shape when seen from below.

Ospreys are brown above and white below, and overall they are whiter than most raptors. From below, the wings are mostly white with a prominent dark patch at the wrists. The head is white with a broad brown stripe through the eye. Juveniles have white spots on the back and buffy shading on the breast.

Ospreys search for fish by flying on steady wing-beats and bowed wings or circling high in the sky over relatively shallow water. They often hover briefly before diving, feet first, to grab a fish.

Ospreys may be found around nearly any body of water: salt-marshes, rivers, ponds, reservoirs, estuaries, and even coral reefs. Their conspicuous stick nests are placed in the open on poles, channel markers, and dead trees, often over water.

During the rut, we often hear the incredible, otherworldly sound of a bull elk bugling. But just how are they making that noise?

Until recently, scientists were stumped — the bugles reach pitches that are far too high to be produced by an elk’s voice box. It turns out there are two forces at work.

Use your binoculars to take a look at a bugling male – you’ll see that he is moving both his lips and his nostrils. That’s right: he’s roaring and whistling simultaneously.

And there......you’ve got the famous elk bugle.

We happened upon this handsome fella in early hours of daylight in Grand Teton National Park. He treated us to his bugle in the chilly morning air....

Have a great new week ahead !

I was inspired to that shot by a photo hanging behind the reception desk of my camping ground. These stairs are leading to one of the three main sights of Moustiers Saint Marie the church Notre Dame de Beauvoir, where every visit is like a pilgrimage.

Sun Studio is known worldwide as “The Birthplace of Rock’n’roll”. It is the discovery location of musical legends and genres of the 50’s from B.B. King and Elvis Presley to Johnny Cash and Jerry Lee Lewis; from Blues and Gospel to Country and Rock’n'roll.

Stand in the very same spot that Elvis first recorded. Inside stories of B.B. King, Howlin' Wolf and Ike Turner before Elvis, Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins, Jerry Lee Lewis, & Roy Orbison who were all drawn to the new Sun Sound.

Last shot from the Elk rut of 2021. I posted a shot of this big guy the other day - the king, in his moment of glory - and it seems appropriate to end with him proclaiming his sovereignty.

I still have a few more to share from this trip: small critters and landscapes.Quieter, less dangerous, and more contemplative pursuits, nonetheless worthwhile. Stay tuned...

The Altstadt (literally "old town") is one of the 49 boroughs of Düsseldorf, Germany; it belongs to central City District 1. The Düsseldorfer Altstadt is known as "the longest bar in the world" (längste Theke der Welt), because the small Old Town has more than 300 bars and discothèques; supposedly, each establishment's bar-counter connecting to one next door.

Düsseldorf is famed for its special beer, Altbier ("old beer"), brewed from an old traditional recipe, which is only procuded in a few places in the world since the end of the 19th century.

The Old Town has an area of half a square kilometer (which is less than a quarter of a percent of the whole city) and has 2297 inhabitants (2000), less than half a percent of the population of Düsseldorf. The density of population is thus 4594 inh./km².

Glyptothek

Munich

(Closed for renovation)

"Munich's oldest public museum; the only museum in the world that is solely dedicated to ancient sculpture ... - there is a whole range of unique characteristics that you could apply to the Munich Glyptothek. But none of these superlatives adequately express what a visit to the Glyptothek can offer in the way of aesthetic, artistic and cultural-historical pleasure.

The name "Glyptothek" is a modern made-up word. It is made up of the old Greek words "glyphein" (to sculpture) and "theke" (repository), meaning therefore a storage place for sculptures. Here Greek and Roman marble statues of the highest quality are presented in a spatial ambience that provides an ideal setting for the works of art. The antiques are free-standing before the plain brick walls of the vaulted museum halls, the architecture of which is modelled on Roman bath buildings. Large windows, which open up the walls down to the floor onto the inner courtyard of the four-winged building, provide for continuous daylight." www.antike-am-koenigsplatz.mwn.de/en/glyptothek-munich.html

The monument to King Tomislav is one of the most recognizable symbols of the city of Zagreb. The monument to King Tomislav, the first Croatian king, is located on the square of the same name.

The brave warrior defended continental Croatia from the invading Hungarians and united all Croatian provinces into one country for the first time. The wise ruler decides to turn the principality into the Kingdom of Croatia and thus in 925 he was crowned with the blessing of the Holy See. His death three years later has never been explained.
