It feels like this month will race by like my little minion getting ready for the holidays. Take some time to enjoy the little pleasures of the season. Recognize the areas that don't need perfection but where good enough will do. Hurry up and slow down.
"If you're serious about what you're doing, you've got to keep your head and follow your instinct. Maybe you won't reach the same dizzy heights as others, but you will get something back." -- Jonny Lee Miller
I experimented with glycerin drops on a metal pizza peel and a purple gel over my ice light to create this abstract image for Purple Week. It is always fun to play and see what can created with few props.
"It is better to create than to learn! Creating is the essence of life. " -- Julius Caesar
Interesting quote but I think if you're doing it right, you learn when you create. What do you think?
I really was at a loss at what to shoot today. I felt a bit flustered and just decided to grab a few bottles of acrylic paint and copy an old favorite. Real life and responsibilites are calling.
"A day without sunshine is like, you know, night." -- Steve Martin
Working on some other ideas, I need to stay calm while drawing but feel rushed because the bubble pops before I finish my compositions.
"Nobody sees a flower really; it is so small. We haven't time, and to see takes time - like to have a friend takes time." --Georgia O'Keeffe
"Embrace uncertainty. Some of the most beautiful chapters in our lives won't have a title until much later." -- Bob Goff
When I was taking this picture, there was a group of deer wandering through the neighborhood I was in, it was a cool moment. I did get a few pictures of them crossing the street but nothing too impressive.
“Use what talents you possess; the woods would be very quiet if only those birds sing there that sang best.”
― Henry Van Dyke
The more often we see the things around us - even the beautiful and wonderful things - the more they become invisible to us. That is why we often take for granted the beauty of this world: the flowers, the trees, the birds, the clouds - even those we love. Because we see things so often, we see them less and less. Joseph B. Wirthlin
This week I am going to work with frozen food, putting my frozen mixed veggies on display today. They will be going in my soup pot, no need to waste anything.

I was trying to capture the peeling paint on the fire hydrant in front of my house. The focus is a bit wonky so I decided to overwork it a bit. It's not my favorite but it will have to do for today. I am challenging myself to focus on a single color for the week so, welcome to red week.
More experiments with light painting in the bubbles. Lessons learned about focus, set-up, timing and although I never quite got the shot I was attempting it wasn't all wasted time. I've been enjoying all of the beautiful spring flowers showing up in the world. In a world where everything shown seems better than it is, we need to remember to enjoy the imperfect too.
I could use some extra arms while working on this project. I used 4 different light sources to create this image - 2 strands of lights, 1 led flashlight and a cheap clamp light with aluminum reflect covered with a gel. I am still fascinated and curious about what I can tease out of the bubble. So many ideas...
Today, I pulled out the Lensbaby Sol45mm f/3.5 and used one of the reflective crystals to create the minion's reflection. I am anxious about using these lenses but know as I play and explore the effects they create I hope to feel more comfortable. Are any Lensbaby users out there? Please feel free to let me in on the shooting secrets.
"I think what is interesting in life is all the cracks and all the flaws and all the moments that are not perfect." -- Clemence Poesy
The rose I used is drying up so the edges are slightly crusty. Purple week was a good excuse to get a bouquet of purplish flowers to work with this week.
I am suddenly craving Bundt cake...
"What can cake teach you about life? That practice makes perfect, and if you try something once, it probably won't be perfect, and you have to keep working on it if you want to be good at it." -- Nicole Byer
It's my final day for orange. II ran out of time to find anything too exciting so I rummaged around in the pantry for some ideas. I have used smoked paprika, turmeric, curry powder, Berbere, cayenne pepper, Salmar seasoning, and fenungreek.
Playing with my frozen panels in the kiddie pool today after following along with @smithandboyd on Instagram. The work they produce is incredible.
Brené Brown: "Stay in your own lane. Comparison kills creativity and joy". Brown says that swimming is a reminder to stay in her own lane, and that comparison and competing ruin her swim.
I'm trying to clean out all of the panels in my freezer so I can make room for different ideas with forming and freezing. I want to try working with making the ice clearer and thicker. We are in a heat wave and the ice melts away in just a few minutes when shooting outdoors.
Side note - when I did an image search with Pinterest it suggested images with blood were close to this image. EEK!
Yes, I know the west is burning out of control, my country is divided, and there is a lot of fear and uncertainty but the way I can deal with it is by escaping each morning. I turn my mind off and immerse myself into photographing, editing, and creating, I can't explain it but it fulfills me and offers me a feeling of control and stability. Luckily, I have found this form of escape. How are you escaping the realities of our times? Turning off the news? Sleeping more? Drinking?
I am back to working on frozen flowers after taking a month off from my photography project. It will take me a bit to get into the habit but I am ready to explore all of the flowers of springtime.
"We are on this planet but once, and to spend it holding back our gushing appreciation of the things that light us up is a shameful waste." - Jen Sincero
I created an elaborate composition but in the end I just used a small portion. Sometimes a little is more powerful than the whole.
“People are like stained-glass windows. They sparkle and shine when the sun is out, but when the darkness sets in, their true beauty is revealed only if there is a light from within.”―Elisabeth Kübler-Ross
I drove around this morning looking for something red to catch my eye. There were a bunch of these flags around the city property that shone so beautifully in the morning light. I actually put on a lens that wasn't macro and used it wide open to isolate the red flag. I got a few weird looks since this flag is basically in the parking lot so I am hunched over the curb waiting for the breeze to catch the flag. It's nothing special or unique but when we focus on things we elevate their status. My mind is on those impacted by last nights storm in Florida.
"We all have our paths in life we are supposed to follow to find who we are supposed to be, but it's not always a straight path. There is something inside of us that guides us, and if you are quiet and listen to it, you'll be all right." -- Kyan Douglas
We had a volunteer sunflower growing in the garden and it fell because it got to large. It didn't die but kept growing, it blocks the path but I just love all of the happy yellow flowers. I also love the idea that just because you fall it doesn't mean that you can't still shine bright and keep thriving. The garden can teach us many lessons if we only pay attention.
This is a single isolated black bead from a necklace given to me by my late mother-in-law. I have three extension tubes on my macro lens to get up very close to the subject and I knew the chains would make a lovely bokeh effect.
In life, we often need to hyper-focus our attention to ignore all of the extra distractions around us. There is so much noise calling for our attention that it's important to block it out and aim for what is urgent.
I decided to use selective color on the eyes of this sweet cat. The focus isn't quite sharp, but I thought the eyes had great catchlights and beautiful colors.
Playing with the lovely evening light and the purple flower that was frozen and formed in a paper cup. This has been sitting in my freezer for about two months. I'm slowly getting through the stash in my freezer and am getting close to my goal. One day at a time, little by little.
I had to find something quick to shoot for today I've already used these shoes before for this project but they are so great I couldn't resist. Tilted images aren't usually my thing but I liked the tension and interest it added. I am grateful that I can find interesting things to shoot without having to go to grand sweeping vistas or mountains. When I am out in the world I am less likely to bring my camera and just enjoy the experience.
This is a quick snap of the minion with the holiday lights behind it. I played with the processing by adding some texture that hid the noise. I'm finding that I cannot easily hand-hold the camera with the new manual lens.
"Calm mind brings inner strength and self-confidence, so that's very important for good health." -- Dalai Lama
My freezer is full of frozen flowers so I need to commit to working on completing my 100-day project. I am trying to have a growth mindset and speak to myself kindly like I would with anyone else. There is power in the idea of I am not where I want to be yet. This is all trial and error and working through showcasing each image is a matter of being ok with them not being perfectly matched to the idea in my head. How do you treat yourself, with kindness and patience or contempt?
