Foot of Thames Street, Fella Point, Baltimore Harbor, Maryland

The Thames Barrier spans 520 metres across the River Thames near Woolwich, and it protects 125 square kilometres of central London from flooding caused by tidal surges. It has 10 steel gates that can be raised into position across the River Thames. When raised, the main gates stand as high as a 5-storey building and as wide as the opening of Tower Bridge. Each main gate weighs 3,300 tonnes.

The barrier is closed under storm surge conditions to protect London from flooding from the sea. It may also be closed during periods of high flow over Teddington Weir to reduce the risk of river flooding in some areas of west London including Richmond and Twickenham.

The Thames Barrier will then remain closed over high water until the water level downstream of the Thames Barrier has reduced to the same level as upstream. This is a managed process to provide for different circumstances, and takes about 5 hours. The Thames Barrier is then opened, allowing the water upstream to flow out to sea with the outward-bound tide.

The Thames Barrier is a retractable barrier system built to protect the floodplain of most of Greater London from exceptionally high tides and storm surges moving up from the North Sea. It has been operational since 1982. When needed, it is closed (raised) during high tide; at low tide, it can be opened to restore the river's flow towards the sea. Built about 2 miles (3.2 kilometres) east of the Isle of Dogs, its northern bank is in Silvertown in the London Borough of Newham and its southern bank is in the New Charlton area of the Royal Borough of Greenwich.

This view is looking towards the city from the East side of the barrier.

Another of my favorite pics from my Europe 2020 trip. I could have cropped it to better center the bridge, but I wanted to keep that hill in the left background.

I wonder, of the people who might see this pic and who live in London, do they see any little pieces of this photo that are personally meaningful to them? Obviously the main subject for me is the bridge, but maybe someone living in that condo on the left is viewing this picture, or someone who was on one of those tour boats when I shot this picture, or someone who works in one of the old converted factory-type buildings along the river...

Think of London and you wouldn't necessarily think of beaches, but there are some that are enjoyed by locals and tourists alike, and the views are amazing.

An early morning walk along the River Thames in Reading today and this canal boat really was pumping out the smoke. It was about -1oC at this point so fair enough!

We were tired and hungry by the time we got to the Thames, but we decided to cross over the Golden Jubilee Bridge and find something to eat!

This view is towards the Houses of Parliament and the MI6 (SIS) Building - I love the low mist we could see in the distance.

Only a short while earlier I had seen this in action, but it was too far away for me to do anything useful with it...

Driving around London by Bus all morning

My sister Jan and I spent an evening walking along the Thames Path (Riverside walk) London, standing on Southwark Bridge looking West up the River Thames, the light is fading fast now.

There is archaeological evidence of people residing in Henley since the second century as part of the Romano-British period.[2] The first record of Henley as a substantial settlement is from 1179, when it is recorded that King Henry II "had bought land for the making of buildings". King John granted the manor of Benson and the town and manor of Henley to Robert Harcourt in 1199.[citation needed] A church at Henley is first mentioned in 1204. In 1205 the town received a tax for street paving, and in 1234 the bridge is first mentioned. In 1278 Henley is described as a hamlet of Benson with a chapel. The street plan was probably established by the end of the 13th century. As a demesne of the crown it was granted in 1337 to John de Molyns, whose family held it for about 250 years.

The Thames Barrier (1984) protects Central London from both tidal and fluvial flooding, and has been operated 178 times so far, 140 of which have been during this century.

Shad Thames is a historic riverside street next to Tower Bridge in Bermondsey, London. In Victorian times, Shad Thames included the largest warehouse complex in London. Completed in 1873, the warehouses housed huge quantities of tea, coffee, spices and other commodities, which were unloaded and loaded onto river boats. For this reason, the area became known as the 'larder of London'

A Thames sailing barge is a type of commercial sailing boat once common on the River Thames in London. The flat-bottomed barges with a shallow draught and leeboards, were perfectly adapted to the Thames Estuary, with its shallow waters and narrow tributary rivers. The larger barges were seaworthy vessels, and were the largest sailing vessel to be handled by just two men.
