January 3: Last night I had just finished dinner and was getting back to some work at 8:45 when my pager went off for a rescue in Big Sur, a woman fallen into a ravine. We were a fairly small team of Sheriff's Office folks (four volunteers, four deputies), supplemented by twelve USAR firefighters. The rescue involved a three-mile hike in, down a steep trail--and then back up it once we had the "patient packaged" (as they say). Hard work, requiring a good fifteen strong men spelling each other as a "mule team" with the Stokes littler on a wheel. She had head injuries, but she was strong and seemed to be doing better than might be expected when we got her up to the staging area at 4 a.m. Meanwhile, however, one of the deputies, Fernando, fell while trying to get to her--and hit his head good and hard. He wasn't wearing his helmet. A second victim. That's not supposed to happen: "personal safety first" is our watchword, in theory. He was a trouper, though, and made his way up that trail--with a little help toward the end. Really gave it his all. The two "patients" were taken by ambulance to Monterey, with us following. I finally got home at 6:30 and heard the helicopter that was flying the first victim out to San Jose (the clouds were too low for a helicopter to land at the rescue site). Then I took a couple-hour nap. When I woke up I checked my messages, and there was this one from Fernando. We sometimes meet for lunch or a run and have become friends. Ironic, to get this this morning. I called the hospital this afternoon, and the ER person said he wasn't in their records so "maybe he was discharged." I sure hope so. I won't sit easy until I hear from him, which may not be for a little while. Poor guy. That's a night he won't forget anytime soon.
