Science Camp – Week One:
We started off our Summer Camp season with our Science Summer Camp for girls. What a great week of learning and fun experiments! With our fearless leader, Jennifer Stimpson, teaching for our Science Camp we had a blast.
The girls had an opportunity to learn about the periodic table and conduct experiments that helped reinforce what they were learning. The campers also learned about four Scientists in our “Mystery Scientist” challenge in which they were given clues to figure out who their scientist’s were. After finding their mystery scientist, each team created a skit to teach others about their scientist, which they presented on Friday for museum staff and parents. The campers also had the opportunity to make homemade Shea butter lotion, the differences in penny materials, see an IMAX film about prehistoric sea creatures, tour the museum, and much more...
Never buy a personal computer endorsed by the star and creative force behind "Leonard Part VI."
I kind of miss the term "Home Computer." An iMac and many of the machines being made by Sony and HP are clear (and proud) inheritors of this sort of legacy -- a computer that serves the needs of an entire household of diverse uers -- but calling a desktop or a notebook a "home computer" causes the same reaction in some people as when you say "Cartoon" to someone who wants you to call Shrek 3 a "digitally-animated feature."

I was going to say something about the awkward nature of the attempt to electronic-ify the Etch-A-Sketch -- one of the most classic and enduring toys, ever -- but during my 10-15 minutes standing around this collection I heard more than one person talk about intensely complex animations they built with the digital device there at the left...one person was a modern filmmaker. He reported that his avante-garde inspiration eventually died somewhere around Week Three of the project, when he was forced to confront just how slow and tedious the process was.
The TI "Speak And Say" line is another one of those interesting product form-factors. Durable plastic slab with rounded edges and big handle. I think a super-iPod along those lines -- 5x7, with a big color screen, removable media, larger, uses 2.5" notebook hard drives for 100+ gig capacity, swappable higher-capacity battery, WiFi, line and mic inputs -- would be a very salable product.
