Science Camp – Week One:

We started off our Summer Camp season with our Science Summer Camp for girls. What a great week of learning and fun experiments! With our fearless leader, Jennifer Stimpson, teaching for our Science Camp we had a blast.

The girls had an opportunity to learn about the periodic table and conduct experiments that helped reinforce what they were learning. The campers also learned about four Scientists in our “Mystery Scientist” challenge in which they were given clues to figure out who their scientist’s were. After finding their mystery scientist, each team created a skit to teach others about their scientist, which they presented on Friday for museum staff and parents. The campers also had the opportunity to make homemade Shea butter lotion, the differences in penny materials, see an IMAX film about prehistoric sea creatures, tour the museum, and much more...

The Texas Instruments TI-99/4A was an early home computer, released in June 1981, originally at a price of USD $525. It was an enhanced version of the less-successful—and quite rare—TI-99/4 model, which was released in late 1979 at a price of $1,150. The TI-99/4A added an additional graphics mode, "lowercase" characters comprised of small capitals, and a full travel keyboard. Its predecessor, the TI-99/4, featured a calculator-style chiclet keyboard and a unique style of ASCII that lacked lowercase text.

See Wikipedia for the full history of my late father's (and probably the entire Pautz family's) first computer.

I had the case open today to clean the keyboard switch pads, so I figured I might take a couple shots of the boards.

This is actually the second mainboard that I've had in this system. The first died and was replaced just before I sent the system to my dad in 1986. I got a beater console that had a working board from a secondhand computer store for $25, and swapped it out.

I'll bet this voids my warranty. ;-)

A Texas Instruments chip on a Fujitsu 73 Gb SCSI hard drive. Taken in Albany, CA by a Nikkormat FT2 with a Micro-Nikkor 55mm ƒ3.5 lens on Kodak Portra 400NC. Negative scanned into computer by an HP G4010. Dust removal, color and gamma correction done in Paint Shop Pro Photo X2.

this is 1:2 (or half life size...) on the film plane.

Demo program flashing LEDs.

Many films have been shot in Richmond over the years. Scenes for two of them were shot practically on my doorstep during my years there. This storefront was transformed for the film 'Love Field,' starring Michelle Pfeiffer and set in Dallas, 1963.

The scene -- which was left on the cutting room floor -- required about two or three dozen vintage cars circling the block while Pfeiffer said a few lines inside a parked car. There was a huge crowd of locals watching from behind barricades. I had the audacity to attempt a photo and got hauled away by a cop built like Arnold Swarzenegger. I took this photo much later, after the filming was done. I wish I had taken more. The entire area had been carefully remade.

By the way, does anyone know if Texas Instruments really had such humble beginnings?

Radio Shack bought a bunch of these power supplies when TI stopped manufacturing the TI-99/4A. They then re-sold them (for about $5.00 each) as hobbyist power supplies. I recognized them and bought a few.
