Science Camp – Week One:

We started off our Summer Camp season with our Science Summer Camp for girls. What a great week of learning and fun experiments! With our fearless leader, Jennifer Stimpson, teaching for our Science Camp we had a blast.

The girls had an opportunity to learn about the periodic table and conduct experiments that helped reinforce what they were learning. The campers also learned about four Scientists in our “Mystery Scientist” challenge in which they were given clues to figure out who their scientist’s were. After finding their mystery scientist, each team created a skit to teach others about their scientist, which they presented on Friday for museum staff and parents. The campers also had the opportunity to make homemade Shea butter lotion, the differences in penny materials, see an IMAX film about prehistoric sea creatures, tour the museum, and much more...

The Turtle Bridge electronic game (top), circa 1982, was one of a series of handheld electronic games published by Nintendo called Game & Watch. A player used a line of five virtual turtles (each of which may move) as stepping stones to transfer baggage from one side of a river to the other. Once a package reached a partner on the other side, the player returned to the home bank to fetch the next package.

The Little Professor Calculator (bottom), circa 1978, made by Texas Instruments, showed arithmetic problems. A correct answer prompted another problem on the eight-digit display. An error delivered the message "EEE."

The National Museum of American History (NMAH), administered by the Smithsonian Institute, collects, preserves and displays American heritage in the areas of social, political, cultural, scientific and military history. The museum, which first opened in 1964 as the Museum of History and Technology, is located on the National Mall in one of the last structures designed by McKim, Mead & White. It was renamed in 1980, and closed for a 2-year, $85 million renovation by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill LLP from 2006 to 2008.

The Smithsonian Institution, an educational and research institute and associated museum complex, administered and funded by the government of the United States and by funds from its endowment, contributions, and profits from its shops and its magazines, was established in 1846. Although concentrated in Washington DC, its collection of over 136 million items is spread through 19 museums, a zoo, and nine research centers from New York to Panama.

I spent this weekend making my own MP3 player using the Daisy kit from Teuthis and Make magazine. I've had the Texas Instruments Little Professor gathering dust in my room for quite awhile. The Daisy just barely fit (although I couldn't fit the back on). I was able to use three of the original calculator buttons to control play/pause and skip forward/reverse, but I had to find another solution for volume control so I mounted some exterior controls.

This platter is from a TI-0001 Disk.

The final design of this drive consisted of seven of these 32-inch platter on a horizontal shaft. The platters rotated at a rate of 1,800 revolutions per minute (rpm). Current hard disks typically have a rotation speed from 5,300 to 7,200 rpm. Each platter had 448 read/write heads to provide a transfer rate of 2 megabytes per second. The total storage of each platter was only 100 megabytes.

Currently on display in Fondren Library Center at Southern Methodist University.

The campers also learned about four Scientists in our “Mystery Scientist” challenge in which they were given clues to figure out who their scientist’s were. After finding their mystery scientist, each team created a skit to teach others about their scientist, which they presented on Friday for museum staff and parents. Science Camp – Week One:

We started off our Summer Camp season with our Science Summer Camp for girls. What a great week of learning and fun experiments! With our fearless leader, Jennifer Stimpson, teaching for our Science Camp we had a blast.

The girls had an opportunity to learn about the periodic table and conduct experiments that helped reinforce what they were learning.
