Senator Gayle Slossberg (D-Milford) testified today in support of Senate Bill 536, a bill she introduced to ensure that the safety of community residents is considered when placing cell canister antennas. Slossberg has been working on this issue with a group of West Haven residents since Verizon announced plans to place one of these antennas in their neighborhood last year. A black and white sketch of a young girl who took the stand at the infamous Leo Frank trial transformed into a colorized, artificially animated image, is an unsettling experience. Considering she was a teenager in 1913, and the average life expectancy at the time was around 45-50 years, it's likely she passed away decades ago, or long before many Flickr observers and readers were born.
The image in question is of Nellie Wood, one of the approximately 10 girls who testified against Leo Frank. When prosecutor Hugh M. Dorsey asked her if Leo Frank's character was "lascivious and bad," Nellie responded with a resolute "Yes!"

Rozafa - the immured woman
Its legend, archeology and history testify to its early existence. The legend is about the initiative of three brothers who set about building the castle. They worked all day, but the walls fell down at night. They met a clever old man who advised them to sacrifice someone so that the walls would stand. The three brothers found it difficult to decide whom to sacrifice. Finally, they decided to sacrifice one of their wives who would bring lunch to them the next day. So they agreed that whichever of their wives was the one to bring them lunch the next day was the one who would be buried in the wall of the castle. They also promised not to tell their wives of this. The two older brothers, however, explained the situation to their wives that night, while the honest youngest brother said nothing.
The following afternoon, the brothers waited anxiously to see which wife was carrying the basket of food. It was Rosafa, the wife of the youngest brother. He explained to her the agreement that they had made, namely that she was to be sacrificed and buried in the wall of the castle so that they could finish building it. She did not protest.
The faithfulness of the youngest brother and the life sacrifice of his young wife are portrayed as elements of symbolic importance. Rosafa, who was predestined to be walled in, worried about her infant son, accepted to be walled in on condition that they leave her right breast exposed to feed her newborn son, her right eye to see him, her right hand to caress him and her right foot to rock his cradle. It is said that milk still flows from one of the walls in the castle.
Rozafa Castle
Rozafa castle (Albanian: Kalaja e Rozafës or Kalaja e Rozafatit) is a castle near the city of Shkodër, in northwestern Albania. It rises imposingly on a rocky hill, 130 metres above sea level, surrounded by the Buna and Drini rivers. Shkodër is the capital of the District of Shkodër, and is one of Albania's oldest and most historic towns, as well as an important cultural and economic centre. Due to its strategic location, the hill has been settled since antiquity. It was an Illyrian stronghold.

House Committee Hears Testimony on Michaud’s Wilderness Bill
Michaud and Maine business owner testify in support of passage
WASHINGTON, DC – Today, Representative Mike Michaud testified before the House Natural Resources Committee’s Subcommittee on Public Lands and Environmental Protection in support of the “Maine Coastal Islands Wilderness Act of 2013” (H.R. 1808), a bill he reintroduced in April that designates 13 islands as federal wilderness areas within the Maine Coastal Islands National Wildlife Refuge complex. Representative Chellie Pingree is a cosponsor of the bill, which is supported by numerous Maine conservation organizations and local businesses. Michaud’s full testimony can be found here.
“This wilderness designation will increase the marketability of this area to tourists and give a boost to the local economy,” said Michaud. “It will also codify the current status of these islands, maintaining the thoughtful balance between recreational, fishing and aquaculture, and refuge uses.”
In addition to Michaud’s testimony, the committee also heard from Marc Bourgoin, a resident of Kittery Point, Maine and co-owner of Lincoln Canoe and Kayak based in Freeport. Bourgoin’s full testimony can be found here. Both Michaud and Bourgoin highlighted a 2012 report by the Maine Office of Tourism that found visitors contributed $5 billion to Maine’s economy. A photo of them talking before the start of the hearing today can be found attached.
“Many of you are probably familiar with the slogan on Maine’s license plate ‘Vacationland,’” said Bourgoin today. “Wildlife watching and ecotourism brings millions of dollars into Maine’s economy annually, supporting guides and boats bringing people to these beautiful places, as well as hotels, restaurants, gas stations, and innumerable stores that serve them. Lincoln Canoe and Kayak has a three part business model—manufacture, retail and experiential. We build boats, sell them and provide our customers wilderness paddling experiences. Tourism is our economic engine and access to wildlife and wilderness fuel that engine.”
There is broad public support for the Maine Coastal Islands Wilderness Act. According to Bourgoin’s testimony, over 600 Mainers submitted positive comments through emails, phone calls, and written testimony at 4 public hearings when the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service presented its draft conservation plan for the Refuge, including the designation of wilderness for these13 islands. Over 100 organizations, conservation groups, individuals, and businesses, including the Penobscot Bay Regional Chamber of Commerce and residents and businesses of Washington County are on record in support of the Maine Coastal Islands wilderness.

United Workers member Shantress Wise testifies at a Baltimore city council public hearing on October 9, 2012, in favor of a bill that would require major changes to the Baltimore Fire Department to be reported to the City Council and announced to the public before their implementation. The bill received preliminary approval during the hearing.
Shantress is a member of the United Worker's West Side Committee that has been fighting city cuts to rec centers and fire stations. In early October, the group acquired 1000 signed petitions, and held a rally in front of the Truck 10 fire station, which was slated to be closed. The next day Baltimore mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake reversed her decision and announced that the fire station would be kept open at least until June 30, 2013.
