The wonderful Empire Test Pilots School English Electric Lightning T.5 XS422 performing at a very murky Boscombe Down on 21st September 1985 at their Families Day to which I was lucky enough to be invited to.

Stored for many years, she's currently coming back to 'life' with the AALO at Stennis, Mississippi where engine runs have already taken place.

While creating Nixie clocks, I destroyed several 74141 ICs along the way. I missed having some sort of testing equipment for the chips and the IN-12 tubes I used. I adapted the Assembler software I had implemented on the single nixie clocks (PIC16F628A) to test the tubes and IC's. The left switch selects the 3 modes: single digit at a time, automatic digit display and nixie clock. The center one changes the digit on SINGLE and CLOCK modes and the right switch turns on the power . The process to create the instruction panel and the etchings is displayed on this set.

Still playing around with the Tamron 150-600. I am mostly shooting at the full 600mm and as long as you stop down it does not seem too bad at all, certainly not as soft as I was led to believe from some reviews. AF on the 5D3 is both fast and accurate in all modes inc AI Servo. I cannot speak for other Cameras although I have briefly tried the lens on my 'ancient' 40D and again the AF seemed fine. Obviously this lens does not come up to a Canon Supertele but competes well with the likes of the 100-400 and 400/5.6 and you have the advance of extra reach. It is head and shoulders better than a couple of other third party zoom lenses that I have tried in the past. The VC (IS) is very effective if hand holding although I prefer shooting from a tripod at these focal lengths so turn the VC off. The real test for me will be shooting distant waders when they return to the estuary. All I can say at this point is that it is a very good value for money for sure.

BTW this shot was taken at the full 600 mm. Nothing special but not too shabby either I would say.

There's an ice storm outside and I'm trapped in the house with these guys. After much debate, we've decided to bake some banana bread and while the bananas aren't quite as ripe as necessary, desperate times, desperate measures, etc. These two have been arguing over who will get to test for doneness. Could get ugly.....

This is the third different version of this tube tester I now have. Acquired in a trade on the weekend, this 9-55 looks nothing like the other two that I have. A gold tone face with red bakelite tube sockets I can't say it's pretty but it is different.

Was just testing out a photo idea up on my roof and thought it was cool enough to still post. Next time, I'm hoping for some clouds and the tower lights on the skyscrapers to be on.

THE TESTERS Incl Joe Brown, Peter Rose, Jimmy Pointer, Billy Reynolds, Flash Rodgers, Ken Cornish, Norman Dawes and George Hughes. The pump boy filled the bikes with petrol and oil before test.

I was testing my 50mm f1.8 lens, as it was giving slightly soft results. However it works very well, is razor sharp, and takes so little space in the camera bag. i ended up liking this shot too, taken of my favourite coffee mug in the study.

In a million years I never thought I would be glad to find one of these at a garage sale, but alas, after learning about using older CRT monitors and tube type televisions as a shutter tester from Rick Oleson I've been looking for one of these for over a year.

I was only guessing this particular TV would work the same as it's larger cousins so the $5 investment was a meager gamble. It works great on both focal plane and leaf shutters and is portable.

That's all this was, just a tester for the main event. But after looking at it, having a bit of a play with it and another look, it just seemed a bit too different to waste.

The class 175 is actually a reasonably photogenic creation, certainly when compared to it's peers from the time. Ok, it's never going to win over a Tractor on load 4, but it could be worse. Voyager, Turbostar...
