Woke up earlier than I normally do this morning and decided to head down to the Lake to see the sunrise..I took so many shots I thought I'd begin with this one.........So beautiful and quiet I only saw one other person riding a bike through..........I was going through caffeine withdrawl and decided to head home after I took about 80 shots lol...To my surprise I saw 6 hawks flying from the big trees..Wouldn't you know it...I didn't have my teleconversion lens with me..However, I did grab a shot of them all together all 6 of them!! (Photo to be posted soon) It really was something to see...With the sunrise and my 6 hawk sighting I couldn't decide what really made my beautiful morning...........

Hope you enjoy this photo as much as I did when I took it.

Have a great day everyone!!

Yesterday I spotted this handsome male Northern Cardinal in an old pine tree..Fortunately he couldn't see me..However, it was in the woods and the light wasn't great........I liked it though..Hope you enjoy him too ;) I do love my teleconversion lens for my little sony for situations like this ;)

"Only a few female North American songbirds sing, but the female Northern Cardinal does, and often while sitting on the nest. This may give the male information about when to bring food to the nest. A mated pair shares song phrases, but the female may sing a longer and slightly more complex song than the male."

Enjoy your day everyone.

Passerine birds...The sunbirds have counterparts in two very distantly related groups: the hummingbirds of the Americas and the honeyeaters of Australia. The resemblances are due to convergent evolution brought about by a similar nectar-feeding lifestyle. Some sunbird species can take nectar by hovering like a hummingbird, but usually perch to feed.

Up close and personal...Stork-billed Kingfisher is a species of a variety of well-wooded habitats near lakes, rivers or coasts. It perches quietly whilst seeking food, and is often inconspicuous despite its size. It is territorial and will chase away eagles and other large predators. This species hunts fish, frogs, crabs, rodents and young birds.

The sunbirds that breed outside of the equatorial regions are mostly seasonal breeders, with the majority of these species breeding in the wet season. This timing reflects the increased availability of insect prey for the growing young. Species of sunbird in the equatorial areas breed throughout the year. They are generally monogamous and often territorial, although a few species of sunbirds have lekking behaviour.

September 14th, 2010 Tonight's Moon..I took this moments ago..Once again handheld in my jimmyjams. Seems to work for me so I'm not going to give it up now. Good thing I don't have to go far from home to get a good moon shot in my jimmyjams!

I see other photos of the moon on flickr from people who are real die hard astrophotographers, with sophisticated equipment hooked up to telescopes etc..I don't know about you but this is pretty good for a gal who just points her camera up into the sky and shoots isn't it? lol

"This evening, the moon shines above the constellation Scorpius and in front of Ophiuchus – the “overlooked” constellation of the Zodiac. Once upon a time, the border between Scorpius and Ophiuchus was not a particularly well-defined section of sky, until the International Astronomers Union officially drew in the constellation borders in the 1930’s."

"We'd been offered a trip

from which we would surely be returning soon,

wouldn't we.

A trip outside eternity -

monotonous, no matter what they say,

and foreign to time's flow.

The chance may never come our way again.

We were besieged by doubts -

does knowing everything beforehand

really mean knowing everything.

Is a decision made in advance

really any kind of choice.

Wouldn't we be better off

dropping the subject

and making our minds up

once we get there.

We looked at the earth.

Some daredevils were already living there.

A feeble weed

clung to a rock,

trusting blindly

that the wind wouldn't tear it off.

A small animal

dug itself from its burrow

with an energy and hope

that puzzled us.

We struck ourselves as prudent,

petty and ridiculous.

They are among the most intelligent primates and use a variety of sophisticated tools, also making sleeping nests each night from branches and foliage. They are generally not aggressive and live a mostly solitary life foraging for food. They are the largest living arboreal animals with longer arms than other great apes. Their hair is typically reddish-brown, instead of the brown or black hair typical of other great apes.

I had a lot of fun with this soft coral fish. I was toward the back end of my only dive for that day, and noted a very small movemetn in the fronds of this flower pot coral. Through patience and persistence I was able to use my 105mm with my 2.0 teleconverter to get some nice close shots. This fish was in Brownian motion (ceaseless random motion) across the soft coral. I don't think you could use a super macro converter or a magnifier to get these shots since the subject is very dynamic...

I had a busy day today and when I got home I noticed the moon was clear as a bell..I quickly grabbed my camera and headed out.....(handheld) of course. A little white later I saw the moon was completely covered in a haze of cloud and I couldn't see much...So here is the shot I took earlier tonight..ENJOY!

First Quarter 47% Full tonight on December 1, 2011.

Where do you find the best views?

"The best views of the Moon occur along the terminator - a sharp line which divides the sunlit and dark parts of the Moon. The terminator represents that part of the Moon experiencing sunrise or sunset. (Think about that for a moment and convince yourself that makes sense.) Whenever you look at the Moon, especially with optical devices, pay particular attention to the area near the terminator. The angle of the sunlight brings out features that often disappear as the terminator moves on. That's because at sunrise or sunset objects project their greatest shadows. Craters and mountains have a real three-dimensional look when the terminator is near them. If you look at the same spot some days later, when it's in more direct sunlight, you will notice that the finer details are now gone and the brightness of the fully illuminated area causes it to have lost much of its beauty."

"The most obvious features on the Moon are the "seas" called maria (singular "mare"). Of course, they aren't seas at all. They are relatively flat areas produced between 3.8 and 3.1 billion years ago by massive flows of lava. When the molten lava first erupted it behaved like water and, while still in a liquid state, it flooded the surrounding areas and filled in much of the low-lying land. Today, those maria produce the "man-in-the-Moon". These lava flows are made mostly of a rock called basalt. Basalt is what commonly remains of lava flows on Earth, too. Lunar basalts are made mostly of pyroxene (a silicate mineral rich in magnesium) and ilmenite (which itself contains lots of titanium - the strongest metal). Basalts are very dark so maria are obvious features on the Moon."

"Maria cover about 16% of the Moon but they are not evenly distributed. The near side ("our side") is rich in maria while maria on the far side are small and scarce. That's because the Moon's center of mass is not at its geometric center. The Moon's center of mass is shifted about 2 kilometers in our direction."

"The rotation of the moon—the time it takes to spin once around on its own axis—takes the same amount of time as the moon takes to complete one orbit of the Earth, about 27.3 days. This means the moon's rotation is synchronized in a way that causes the moon to show the same face to the Earth at all times. One hemisphere always faces us, while the other always faces away. The lunar far side (aka the dark side) has been photographed only from spacecraft."

Have a great weekend everyone.

Birding Catch!...Hi all, just got back to Kuching City, spent my weekend retreat in my village and captured these birds in their natural habitat,,,

Info: Sunbirds are very active little birds with long, slender, curved bills that feed on the nectar of flowering shrubs, and the tiny insects found around them. Sometimes, they hover in front of the flower like a hummingbird, but only briefly. Although the males are often very colourful, and sometimes glossy, the coloured parts may just appear blackish in poor light, so that identification can be difficult. The females are especially difficult, most of them being alike, olive above and yellowish below.

(Derek Holmes & Stephen Nash, The Birds of Sumatra and Kalimantan, 1990)

Natural lighting...They first came to Malaysia in the 19th century as British political prisoners. A second wave was brought in by the British to serve as policemen for the British Straits Settlement communities and as night watchmen for industries.

Have a great Sunday and thank you for commenting and visits...

Sweet nectars...The Olive-backed Sunbird Cinnyris jugularis is the most common sunbird in urban areas around Borneo. It is also found in the mangroves and plantations while its altitude range goes up to 1,500m. While seemingly the closest relative we have to the hummingbirds, sunbirds here can only hover momentarily, more often perching while feeding.

"Mare (plural maria) means "sea," but maria on the moon are plains on the moon. They are called maria because very early astronomers thought that these areas on the moon were great seas. The first moon landing was in the Mare Tranquillitatis (the Sea of Tranquility). Maria are concentrated on the side of the moon that faces the Earth; the far side has very few of these plains. Scientists don't know why this is so."

We're off for a couple of days..So I'll catch up when we get back ;)

The ambition of many years was finally achieved by me getting worthwhile photos of a British kingfisher.

I arrived by 0800 on a sunny morning and within 15 minutes the kingfisher had visited twice. I did not see it again by the time I left soon after 0930.

This was during the kingfisher's second visit.

Thanks to Debbie for inspiring the visit.
